#2029 – A Winter Weekend in London (Introduction)

ENGLISH

Posts in the A Winter Weekend in London mini series:
1. Introduction
2. Part I: London
3. Part II: The Long Way Home

As my Instagram followers (@azilko) have known, I went on a weekend trip this weekend. Yep, just literally a week after coming back from my November 2017 trip to Indonesia, I went on another trip! Haha 😛 Anyway, the destination this time was:

Piccadilly Circus in London

Yes, London, again!! Again as in this was my fourth time visiting London in the last six months or so, haha 😛 . Why London and, especially, “again”? Well, because why not, haha 😛 . I mean, I love London!

The main motivation behind this trip was my UK visa that is going to expire soon, so I feel like I need to go there on one more trip before it expires. About the destination, actually I was torn between London or Edinburgh. The flight to Edinburgh was cheaper but I found cheaper hotel in London. However, I had been to London three times already this year while my last trip to Edinburgh was more than five years ago. On the other hand, I loved London! Haha 😛

So after going back and forth between the two, in the end I chose London because I found a return flight with departure to London City Airport which in my previous trip there the plane did not land at my favorite runway 09. So I decided to take another chance, who knew I would be luckier this time! (What kind of reasoning is this?) Lol 🙈. Beside, I loved London so I knew I would enjoy this trip anyway.

I also got upgraded (again 😆) to Europe Business Class on my flight to London.

However, as my Instagram followers would also have known, not everything went as planned during the trip, especially on the Sunday part. During the weekend, it was snow storming very hard at Schiphol that a lot of flights got cancelled, including all of KLM’s flights to London on Sunday afternoon, including mine. At the time the Monday forecast was also not any good so the uncertainty was high. KLM, though, offered Amsterdam-bound passengers an alternative: that was to take a bus they arranged to travel that afternoon via land to Schiphol. While this certainly was a major inconvenience especially in comparison with the 1 hour flight from London to Amsterdam, at least this way we would arrive in Amsterdam by early morning on Monday (Though they estimated at around midnight).

When all flights to Amsterdam from London get cancelled due to heavy snow at Schiphol and KLM (the airline) arranges a bus service between the two as the best possible solution due to tomorrow's forecast that isn't any better. Funnily I don't think it is that bad because this actually means the fulfillment of a long forgotten bucket list item of mine that is to travel between the Netherlands and London with all possible means of public transport. Bus was the only one missing as I have (obviously) taken many flights, the Eurostar trains, and the ferry boat services! I decided to take a spot in the bus. As I said in my Instagram post above, actually I did not think this was *all* bad, haha. At least this way I could cross that item from my bucket list and let’s hope I would never have to go through it again 😛 .

What would have happened if I did not take this offer, btw? Well, I actually know the answer to this question. During the bus trip, I got a notification that KLM had also rebooked me to the first available flight out of Heathrow to Schiphol that would be on a Tuesday morning, plus compensation to all extra costs (including accommodation and transportation) because of this. But then, of course, I would only arrive in Amsterdam just before noon on Tuesday; and this was, at the time, to assume there would be no prolonged effect of the snow storm on Tuesday morning…

Anyway, here are some teasers from the trip:

Posting-posting dalam seri singkat A Winter Weekend in London:
1. Introduction
2. Part I: London
3. Part II: The Long Way Home

#2027 – A Very “Colorful” Week

ENGLISH

It has been a full working week since I got back home from my November 2017 Trip to Indonesia. So how has this week been?

Well, as in any other week following a long-haul flight crossing several different time zones, the week started with my body fighting the jetlag, haha. I went to work on Monday and it was quite annoying because the jetlag was still quite strong while at the same time I was tuning back to where I left off at work and tried to catch up on what has been going on while I was away.

Speaking of work, there was a track outing event this Thursday where we went: karaoke-ing after work! Haha 😛 . Btw it surprised me that karaoke won the votes (We voted for what activity we would like for the track outing). Anyway, it turned out to be really fun! 😛

Yeah, so my theme this week was, indeed, mainly about recovery. While generally I was getting better as the week passed by, I wasn’t feeling particularly well in the middle of the week. I think I caught a flu because of the jetlag and also the sudden switch of climate from tropical rainy season to European winter. While the flu wasn’t that bad, it was enough to affect my fitness that day a little bit.

I still managed to go to my tennis lesson this week but conflicting agenda and the flu prevented me from going to the gym. I actually thought of fighting through the flu and went to the gym in the middle of the week. But I have learned that I needed to listen to my body and to think of the bigger picture that is my work and upcoming personal plans. So I cancelled my gym plan and tried to not be too harsh on myself, haha. My health is a priority, right? 😛

Speaking of the European winter, this happened yesterday:

Yes, it was snowing!! No matter how many times before I have experienced snow, I still find it very beautiful!! 😍😍😍

So, yeah, this week indeed has been a really “colorful” week for me!!

BAHASA INDONESIA

Iyaa, turun salju dooong!!

#1883 – Wintery February

ENGLISH

As usual, this February has been the coldest month this winter 😛 . While in Amsterdam it was also snowing in January (only for a little bit, though), it was much more frequent in February. In fact, it was more than enough for the snow to pile up!

And those who have experienced snow would fully understand that, indeed, this is the best feeling ever:

Haha 😆

This winter is my seventh winter in the Netherlands. Even then, I still find snow to be really beautiful and magical! Haha 😆 And so obviously I am glad that the winter of 2013/2014 still remains as my only snowless winter 😛 .

BAHASA INDONESIA

#1850 – Winter Solstice

ENGLISH

If I mentioned one of the reasons I do not like Fall was the shorter days, then I must also not like Winter as well from this perspective. In fact, today is the Winter solstice, i.e. the shortest day and longest night of the year.

This was how it looked like outside when I was on my way to work at around 07:45 AM:

07:45 during winter solstice
07:45 during winter solstice

And here is how it was when I was on my way back from work at around 05:00 PM in Amsterdam:

5 PM during winter solstice
5 PM during winter solstice

Yep, technically I did not work overtime today but I went to work before the sun rose and left after the sun set! Lol 😆 . In fact, there was only 7 hours and 40 minutes of sunlight today:

Only 7 hours and 40 minutes of daylight today
Only 7 hours and 40 minutes of daylight today

And to top it off, the cloud cover was 99% above Amsterdam today! Yep, those little amount of sunlight was even covered by (thick) cloud! Haha 😦 .

From the perspective of length of day, today is the most depressing day of the year, haha 😆 . On the flip side, though, this means that it is going to get better from now on, where the days are getting longer and longer, until we hit the Summer solstice in June.

This reminds me, though, that it has been exactly half a year since this year’s Summer solstice. Wow, time really went by really, really fast!!

At least I met Santa today

BAHASA INDONESIA

07:45 during winter solstice
Jam 7:45 pagi ketika winter solstice

5 PM during winter solstice
Jam 5 sore ketika winter solstice

Haha 😆 . Malahan, hari ini Belanda hanya mendapatkan sinar matahari selama 7 jam 40 menit saja loh:

Only 7 hours and 40 minutes of daylight today

Wow, waktu benar-benar cepat berlalu!!

#1846 – The Frankfurt Christmas Market

ENGLISH

Earlier this month, I went to Frankfurt in a weekend trip to go to the famous Christmas Market being held there. So how was the Christmas Market? Well, here is the story 🙂 .

***

It was really exciting when the tram was stopping at Römerberg, Frankfurt’s famous square that hosted the Christmas Market. Unsurprisingly, though, I was not the only one having an idea to visit the market this weekend:

Frankfurt Christmas Market
Frankfurt Christmas Market

Yes, it was SO full of people!! Lol 😆

I concluded that Christmas Market was, indeed, a big thing in Germany. And I was not the only foreigner there as well; as I heard several different languages being spoken there.

The timing of the trip was also great as just earlier that week, Sintha posted a story about the Christmas Market and she recommended the weißer glühwein (white glühwein). I really liked it when I had something to look for while visiting, as it gave me an extra purpose! But then it turned out that it was not that difficult at all to find glühwein sellers in the Christmas Market; as there were MANY booths selling them! Haha 😆 . Apparently, indeed glühwein was a famous typical Christmas Market drink in Germany! Haha 😆 .

It wasn't difficult at all to find glühwein at the market.
It wasn’t difficult at all to find glühwein at the market.

In short, glühwein was a mug of wine that was served warm. So indeed it was interesting, as I had never had a wine served warm on purpose before! It was perfect for the occassion too since it was winter already and this part of Europe was struck by cold wind that week. So unsurprisingly, most people there walked with a mug of glühwein (the mugs were so cute with the Christmas-y patterns 😀 )

Anyway, so I went to one of the sellers and saw that 1 mug of weißer glühwein was sold for €3. It was okay, I thought; so I ordered one. But then the guy asked €6 from me. I was surprised at first but then I realized that the extra €3 was a deposit for the mug. I was given my glühwein and a chip which I could exchange for the €3 after I finished by returning the mug, haha 😛 .

Glühwein and the Christmas Market
Glühwein in a cute Christmasy mug 😛 .

I ordered the weißer glühwein though I am not sure if the guy actually gave me one. It tasted more like red than white wine, in my opinion, haha. Nonetheless, it was nice; though I am still curious how the actual white one would taste like (I normally like white wine more than red; though it still depends on the occassion 😛 ).

Anyway, the market was really nice. It was not super big (as it was constrained by the size of the square as well), but in a way this played a role in creating the festive atmosphere. There were even two Merry-Go-Rounds there! Haha 😆 .

Frankfurt Christmas Market
Frankfurt Christmas Market

After about one hour going around the market, I decided that it was enough as it started to get colder as well. You know, I did not feel that well earlier that week and I was afraid the flu would hit me back as technically I was still recovering. So I decided to take the tram and went back to my hotel to rest.

And that concluded the story of my first visit to a German Christmas Market! 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

Frankfurt Christmas Market
Frankfurt Christmas Market

Iyaaa, RAME BANGET dong!!! Huahaha 😆

Haha 😆 .

It wasn't difficult at all to find glühwein at the market.

Glühwein and the Christmas Market

Anyway, pasarnya sendiri seru deh.

#1843 – Staying Warm in Winter

ENGLISH

Life in winter means we have to find the resources to stay warm. This is important in the Netherlands now as winter has officially come. Aside from, obviously, wearing winter clothes (thus adding extra minutes to get ready in the morning as there are many different stuffs to wear, lol 😆 ), here are some of the others:

Warm Shower

Generally, I like warm shower anyway; but actually even more so during winter. It just feels so good to enter the shower cubicle where warm water was already pouring!! Even more so last night, when I showered after my outdoor tennis lesson for one hour!

But then, of course, I have to face the harsh reality where I need to find the courage to get off the cubicle and back in the cold, lol 😆 .

Heater

To be honest I have a love and hate relationship with heater. I love it because, obviously, it keeps the room temperature comfortable enough for me to be in. On the other hand, it makes the air in the room to be really dry.

The consequence of the latter is that I need to drink water more frequently. Despite this, in the night I still turn my heater on when I sleep; I mean, for the obvious reason. Consequently, though, I almost always wake up in the middle of the night because I need to drink something. Even so, it does not mean that my body actually needs the water; sometimes it is just the dry throat due to the dry air. So sometimes, I also wake up just because of the urge to go to the toilet 😆 . This means that I rarely have an uninterrupted 7 – 8 hours of sleep every night, haha 😆 .

Warm Food/Drink

And, obviously, warm drink or (liquidy) food, like soup, taste even better in winter months!

***

And you, what do you do to stay warm? 🙂

A big portion of corn soup
This bowl corn soup would have tasted so good now!! 😣

BAHASA INDONESIA

#1841 – Winter Is Here

ENGLISH

I guess it is official now:

Well, it is December already so it might not be that surprising actually, lol 😆 .

Earlier this week, this was the weather forecast in the Netherlands:

Weather forecast earlier this week
Weather forecast earlier this week

Yeah, the temperature has officially gone subzero now; though as usual, we just get the cold here in winter and not the snow, lol 😆 (Ignore the warning, it did not happen). Consequently, I had to finally admit the situation and open my winter wardrobe and take my winter coat with me; along with my scarves, gloves, and flappy winter hat.

Normal winter ammunition
Normal winter ammunition (from 2014)

On the not so good news, I also did not feel that well earlier this week too. I think I caught a flu. Well, I was not sick per se, but I felt like I was not 100% fit. Maybe somewhere around 75-80%. I combatted that with vitamin C, consuming some soups, and limitted my physical exercises (I skipped my tennis lesson this week (also partly due to the subzero temperature, though 😛 ) and a gym session). This way, I was able to maintain my level of fitness to not drop into the “being sick” category, which was, in my opinion, very important.

A teapot of ginger tea
Some warm tea also tastes better in winter!

Anyway, I feel much better now already, so I am happy about that! 🙂 Well, as I implied in this post, winter is not the season I do not like the most. In fact, I actually quite like it, especially the December part of it where people are already preparing for the Christmas and New Year holiday season!! 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

Weather forecast earlier this week

A teapot of ginger tea
