#2074 – “Warm” Temperature and A Power Bank

ENGLISH

Warm, because of the cold!

You know, last week the Netherlands was hit by the Beast from the East where, at one point, the real feel of the temperature was –20°C.

The Beast from the East

In short, it was really, really cold, haha. However, since last week’s Sunday, thankfully the temperature has started to go back to normal; and it helped that the weather has generally been really nice too.

There turns out to be a side effect of that, though. While the Beast from the East only hit Amsterdam for about half a week, apparently it was enough to alter my perception of “cold”. I was really surprised when earlier this week the temperature’s real feel was in the 5°–10°C range, I found it really, really warm! It felt like I did not need my coat! Haha 😆 . Well, technically, it was 25°–30° “warmer” than last week so perhaps this was less surprising, but still! Haha 😆 .

Power bank

Anyway, just before my weekend trip to Nice I realized that my power bank, which I bought in August 2014 in Yogyakarta, was apparently broken. All this time this power bank had been very useful on my (many) trips so I knew I would like and need to buy a new one. I decided to buy one online and earlier this week the product was delivered to me.

However, I was surprised by its size because it was: huge (and kind of heavy)! To be honest I did not really check the size indeed when placing the order; and so my mistake indeed. And so I checked if a power bank with this specification was allowed in a plane cabin. Luckily, it was still well within the limit and so this was fine, I guess, haha…

Hangat, karena dingin!

Tahu kan, minggu lalu Belanda diterjang oleh Beast from the East dimana, di satu waktu, real feel dari suhu udaranya mencapai –20°C.

The Beast from the East

#2072 – The Beast from the East

ENGLISH

I have mentioned it a little bit last week that it was extremely cold in Europe. This was caused by what was dubbed as the “Beast from the East”, or locally known as the “Siberian Bear” in the Netherlands, where cold air from Western Russia was “pushed” towards Europe. And by cold, it was really cold. Here is how it was in Amsterdam at some point (at 7 PM-ish) last week:

The Beast from the East

Yep, while the measured temperature was –8°C, the real feel (basically how our skin/body would perceive the temperature, which could be very different from the measured temperature because of other factors, such as cloud coverage, wind, humidity, etc) was –20°C!! 😱😱😱 You know, this winter was my eighth winter, and actually I think this was the coldest I have ever experienced in the Netherlands!

Coincidentally, last week was a school vacation week (de krokusvakantie) so my outdoor tennis lesson was also taking a break! It could be a very “interesting” challenge to play outdoor tennis under such weather; which I have no problem of missing it, haha 😛 . Speaking of an outdoor activity, the following was popular in the Netherlands last week:

Yep, it was so cold that some canals in Amsterdam literally froze! And so many people ice skated there. Even some of my colleagues said they would skate to go to work (Though I am not sure if this actually materialized or not, haha).

I also feel quite lucky to not have arranged any travelling plan (which would surely have involved some flights 😛 ) during the weekend. With this weather, there was a higher chance for an operational delay, of course, or even cancellation. So I am glad I did not have to worry about this at all!

On the more positive side, it was also snowing last week in the Netherlands. And after eight winters, I still find snow really beautiful!! (Even though I have also learned about and experienced first hand many troubles snow could cause, like this experience not too long ago.)

Beast from the East
