#1998 – Star Trek: Discovery

ENGLISH

Not too long ago, I mentioned about the (what I had thought) neutral Star Trek: Voyager topic which suddenly “lost” its neutrality so I, to some degree, was “forced” to publish it asap. And here is the reason why:

In an unexpected (for me) turn of event of the year, it turned out that a new Star Trek series was released this September: Star Trek: Discovery!! 😱

Yes people, there was a new Star Trek series!! As in a new one after Star Trek: Enterprise that was aired in the early 2000s!

Obviously as a self-proclaimed Trekkies, I was very excited about this! Luckily to me, I could find this series in the Dutch Netflix! So I guess afterall I would not need to worry about finding a new series to follow after marathoning the entire nine seasons of HIMYM anyway, haha 😛 .

***

The first two episodes of the series were actually just “prologue”, where not even all of the main characters were introduced yet. I found it interesting that watching those first two episodes actually felt more like watching a Star Trek movie (though with a cliff-hanger ending) rather than a two-part episode of a Star Trek TV-series. But I guess this was intended 🙂 .

This made the start of the show and the general outlook a “breathe of fresh air”, IMO. The main character of the show, Michael Burnham, was sentenced for life at the end of the prologue. We entered the main setting of the show, USS Discovery, in the third episode following her point of view, as a “newbie” and an “outcast” (Remember that she is a prisoner) in an already established crew and ship in the middle of their mission. She was invited to join the crew by the USS Discovery’s captain, Gabriel Lorca, himself who was, obviously, well aware of Burnham’s status which he didn’t care about.

Indeed it is interesting that the captain here arguably is not the lead character of the show, unlike other Star Trek series!! On top of that, casting Jason Isaacs, the actor who played Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies, as the captain was a brilliant decision because the captain was depicted, somehow, like a “freak” at the beginning of the series. So I think it was a perfect match 🙈.

Anyway, the storyline took place at about 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series timeline, and about 100 years before The Next Generation and Voyager. And so it felt a little bit funny to me that the technology in this series, due to the latest and more advanced CGI technique, appeared to be more advanced than those three other series while in the story, this series should have been much less advanced, haha 😛 .

***

When I first learned about the timeline, to be honest I was a little bit disappointed. I mean, the “reboot” movie installments (which three movies have been produced since 2009) also “anchored” themselves around The Original Series. And so I wish for the TV series, the writers would have chosen to fall closer to The Next Generation or Voyager timeline. But this was probably me being biased, as I was more familiar with The Next Generation or Voyager.

Oh, and one more thing, somehow I don’t really like the design of USS Discovery.

Ah well, there is no use in complaining for now. I guess, it is better for me to just sit back, relax, and enjoy this unexpected surprise!! 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

***

Oh iya, penting banget nih. Entah mengapa aku kurang menyukai disain pesawat USS Discovery, haha.

#1991 – Nostalgia: Star Trek: Voyager

ENGLISH

This post has sat in my draft for more than a year now; as I first wrote it after watching Star Trek Beyond last year (This post would have been numbered in the 1700s had I published it immediately). But since then, due to the (what I thought) neutrality of its topic, this post has acted as a good “back up” in case I would encounter a writer’s block, haha. But then, this neutrality has actually started to fade away recently (more on this soon!). And so it appears that the time has come to let this post live its real life being published here. So here we go! 🙂

***

So I have mentioned that I am a self-proclaimed Trekkies. However, I must admit that I have not watched all series of Star Trek, haha 😆 . Growing up in the 1990s and 2000s, obviously I was more familiar with the series that were running in those periods. There were four though: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise. Of the four, I was the least familiar with Deep Space Nine mainly because it was not aired in Indonesia if I recall correctly.

However, of the other three, my most favorite one was, without a doubt, Star Trek:Voyager.

The premise of the series was interesting. USS Voyager (the primary setting of the series) was just a “middle-class” Interprid series spacecraft designed for exploration missions. However, due to a freak event in the Pilot episode, the spacecraft was transported over 70,000 light years away to the Delta quadrant, the furthest away part of the Milky Way galaxy (from Earth) and also the least known and explored of. Yes, the series was about the journey of USS Voyager and the crews back home across this uncharted section of the galaxy.

One unique (at the time) aspect which I like about the series was that the captain of USS Voyager was a woman, Captain Kathryn Janeway. This really gave the series a special outlook with the “motherly” and more “humanly” touch from a captain. You know, not always like the bang bang testosterone action show even though admittedly when I was young(er), the battle part was actually the part I enjoyed the most 😛 .

I was introduced into this series by my dad. Even back then he made me (and my brother) a maquette of USS Voyager from styrofoam! Too bad at the moment I don’t have a picture of it.

I did not watch all seven seasons when I was in Indonesia. I remember the show did not air for too long due to the rather low rating. Well, being aired in RCTI literally in the middle of the night at like 2 AM or so, who would actually stay up and watch it? At that time we always recorded it in a VHS video tape, haha 😆 . But just after I moved to the Netherlands, in the Fall of 2010 I finished watching all seasons, haha 😆 .

So, who is also a Trekkie and who also loves Star Trek:Voyager? 🙂

p.s: of course it also helps that Star Trek: Voyager has the most beautiful intro with the musical arrangement of all the Star Trek series, imo:

BAHASA INDONESIA

Ada empat: Star Trek: The New Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, dan Star Trek: Enterprise.

USS Voyager NCC-74656. Source: http://io9.gizmodo.com/why-star-trek-voyager-meant-the-world-to-me-1679736359
USS Voyager NCC-74656. Sumber: http://io9.gizmodo.com/why-star-trek-voyager-meant-the-world-to-me-1679736359

p.s: tentu saja sangat membantu dimana Star Trek: Voyager memiliki intro dengan aransemen musik terindah dari semua serinya Star Trek, menurutku sih (bisa ditonton di tautan Youtube berikut 😛 ).

#1984 – HIMYM, Three Years Later

ENGLISH

In June I shared about my new subscription with Netflix and how I found it surprising that I could not find Friends or The Big Bang Theory there but, at least, I got How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM). Anyway, because of this, since then I have been running a marathon on HIMYM and, as of recently, I finally finished all nine seasons! Haha 🙈.

I have quite a “long” history with HIMYM. I first watched it in Star World in 2007, quite possibly at this time, and was immediately captivated by its brilliant Pilot episode. I watched its first three seasons sporadically in Star World before moving to the Netherlands in 2010. And then, I learned about the possibility to catch it up online that was highly supported by the amazing internet speed, haha 😆 . So I went on a marathon to catch up (Star World was behind by two seasons, btw, as HIMYM was premierred in 2005 actually). And early in 2014, I watched its final episode.

And that, kids, is how I met your mother.

– Ted Mosby

You see, at the time I was very disappointed with the ending. I mean, I am all in with twists or surprises, as long as those “worked”; but this twist the writers chose for the ending of such a wonderful sitcom did not feel like “working”, at least to me. I mean, I understood the “logic” behind it but this did not mean that I would like it, right? And I really didn’t.

I thought time might change my mind. You know, afterall people change anyway. But here I am, after re-marathoning the entire nine seasons of HIMYM more than three years after the conclusion of its last season, I can say that my position on the show’s finale turns out to still be the same. I still feel disappointed with the ending #consistency, haha 😆 .

Nonetheless, the show is not only about how it ends. There are a lot of gems in the show. And I am especially glad I got to watch the first a few seasons because I, honestly, had apparently forgotten quite many details about those so watching some of those episodes still felt like watching new ones at times, haha. So even though I am disappointed with the ending, I still enjoyed Ted’s super long story on how he met his children’s mother (read: his wife).

And so, despite the disappointing ending, I still can say this show is one of my favorites 🙂 .

Well, now that I have finished the entire nine seasons, I guess I need to find another (long) series to watch. Too bad the Game of Thrones is not on Netflix (My new colleague has become like the 5437th person who has recommended me to start watching this series, btw, haha 😆 ), hmm…

BAHASA INDONESIA

How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) sih.

And that, kids, is how I met your mother.

– Ted Mosby

#1934 – The Amazing Race 29

ENGLISH

One of the current TV shows (well, if not the “only” show 😛 ) I have been following lately is The Amazing Race 29. And last week, this season was concluded with its final leg in Chicago!

This has been another amazing season of The Amazing Race. Its unique concept of pairing 22 strangers turned out to be a nice one, where some teams got in fights (unsurprisingly) because of their “unfamiliarity” between partners and the personality difference between them. However, this did not really change the overall dynamic in the show, in my opinion, because even teams with pre-existing relationship could still get into fights just because of the stressful environment of the race.

Acropolis was the pitstop of the Athens leg
I also really liked it that the teams were not shy of using the three double u-turns throughout the race! Surely this would make the show more interesting where some teams got pressed because they were being u-turned, or that another team u-turned their “ally” team so to help them they u-turned another team, lol 😆 .

The “design” of the tasks and race, however, felt a little bit clumsy especially in the first half of the season, though this improved a lot towards the end. For instance, it was a no brainer at the Lake Como leg that whoever got u-turned would get eliminated due to the five minutes interval between the one team per ferry ride they had to take. However, the Ninh Binh leg was an extremely brutal leg physically, and so “fun” to watch (but not fun for the racers to race, obviously; and I felt bad for Floyd). It was followed up with the awesome Seoul leg where all of the tasks were “so Korean”, even including playing a video game match against professional!

The racers had to go to Gangnam in the Seoul leg.
*** Spoilers alert, but it has been more than a week anyway so perhaps nothing are “spoilers” anymore 😛 ***

My favorite team of this season was: Brooke and Scott, haha 😆 . This might come as a “surprise” given the “villain” stamp the editors appeared to give them; and that Brooke was a total drama panicky queen. But I did find the dynamic between the two interesting because Scott tried to calm Brooke down and they strategized really well throughout the race, clearly “students” of the show! And in the end, Brooke and Scott ended up winning the 29th season!!

I am glad that The Amazing Race has been renewed to, at least, one more season!! The drop in TV ratings and the more than one year distance between the premiere of season 28 and 29 had “worried” me a little bit, to be honest. Well, now I just can’t wait for the next season!! 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

#1931 – Netflix

ENGLISH

With my smart TV, I am now connected to Netflix. Even though back then I found the library to not be as large as I expected (I still do), to be honest, the experience has exceeded my expectation so far!

In my free time, I have the options to browse through the library and watch some movies or TV-shows. Of course, not all of them are good. A few times I stumbled across the really bad ones, haha 😆 . But hey, I finished them still which showed that Netflix “worked”.

I am quite surprised, though, that neither the sitcoms Friends or The Big Bang Theory are in the library. Especially with the latter, it would have been super nice given that I have missed the last couple of seasons. Well, at this point I can just hope Netflix will add them in the future.

At least I have the entire nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother

On the other hand, I was also surprised by the range of some of its collections. For instance, there was even Big Bad Beetleborgs there! Haha 😆 .

Overall, while it is nice to find some stuffs I am familiar with, there; I am actually more excited of the stuffs I am unfamiliar with. I am hoping to find some golden gems there. Though, now that I think about it, I worry (a little bit) this will take some of the fun of flying long-haul which one activity I like is to browse the plane’s IFE, which includes its movies library! Even though, on the other hand, with my Netflix I do not need to worry of a stranger (read: fellow passengers sitting nearby in a plane) judging me with my selection of movies 😛 .

So, does any of you use Netflix as well? And what do you think about it?

BAHASA INDONESIA

Setidaknya aku memiliki keseluruhan sembilan musimnya How I Met Your Mother

Huahaha 😆 .

Nah, apakah ada yang menggunakan Netflix juga? Dan bagaimanakah pendapat kalian tentangnya?

#1902 – TAR 29 and Google’s Video

ENGLISH

The Amazing Race 29

Last week, The Amazing Race 29 was premiered. It had really been awhile since the previous season (28th), that was premiered in February 2016 meaning it had been more than one year since the last season! And I missed this show! Especially that geographical reason prevented me from following (thus enjoying the “hype”) of The Amazing Race Asia 5 at the end of last year (even though I managed to watch its first episode that was held in Jakarta).

Anyway, TAR 29 is another “unique” installment of the show where, this season, all participants were strangers and they had to form their own teams at the starting line. To be honest I am not 100% super enthusiastic about this change because this would mean all the team relationships we would see during the show would still be in the “outer” level. Though, on the other hand, I am also interested to see how it would play out throughout the race, haha…

Yeah, I am just excited that The Amazing Race is, finally, back!!

Google’s Video

Anyway, last week, Google Nederland released this video:

They “took credit” of the amazing weather in the Netherlands in the second half of March. Apparently, we all had to thank “Google Wind” whom had repurposed the 1170 windmills in the whole Netherlands to generate wind so strong that it literally blew all cloud away from the country. As a result, per 1 April 2017, they could guarantee clear sky for everyone, lol 😆 .

***

Haha, in my opinion, this was another really smart April Fool’s video by Google; especially for the Dutch market. You know, in the Netherlands pretty much everyone agrees to hate the weather (as Armin van Buuren said in the beginning of the video, apparently for 145 days every year, it rains in the Netherlands *nodding my head*). And I really liked the video because it was really “smooth”, where some actually irrelevant but relevant-sounding terms were thrown in, like Google Cloud and machine learning, haha 😛 .

Though, now that I think about it, indeed in those two weeks when the weather was awesome, it was really windy, hmmm 🤔.

The Amazing Race 29

Minggu lalu, The Amazing Race 29 mulai tayang.

Ya, pokoknya sih, aku merasa senang The Amazing Race, akhirnya, kembali!!

Videonya Google

Minggu lalu, Google Nederland merilis video berikut:

Just like last summer, here are seven more recent Just For Laughs videos which I really liked and enjoyed 😀 .

(1) Kid Uses Baguette for his Stick Up

What can I say? I just like a prank with a twist like this. Do you expect the twist btw? 😛

(2) Jurassic Park Prank!

The idea of this prank was actually very simple and common. However, what impressed me the most was just how real the dinosaur looked!! 😱😱😱😱😱 That was damn scary! 😆

(3) Coffin Blocks Cars from Driving By

As I said above, I like a storyline that has a twist 😛

(4) It’s Raining Teddy Bears!

If it worked, I wonder how much the dollar sign umbrella would cost though, lol 😆

(5) Instant Top Secret Mission Prank!

I mean, after all the drama and suspense… 😅😅😅

(6) Woman Proposes Live on FaceTime!

The jealous reaction of some of the girls was hilarious! 😛

(7) Fake Amputee Asks for Money

I think in Indonesia this actually is not a prank 😛 .

(8) Stealing Customers’ Grocery Bags !

The idea is really brilliant!! 😛

(9) The Worst Paramedics in History

I mean … 😅😅😅
