In short, I followed the same travelling strategy to London as two years ago. IMO, this strategy was quite efficient and economical given the last-minute nature of the trip.

Getting to London

I started the trip by taking the Hoek van Holland – Harwich ferry boat on Friday evening which arrived on Saturday morning. The timing was perfect because I could go straight to Wimbledon after arriving in London with the regional train service from Harwich. Also, this saved me one night of London’s expensive hotel room, haha 😛 .

Anyway, so straight from work, I went to Amsterdam Centraal to take the train to Hoek van Holland. Apparently the Hoek van Holland station was being renovated at the time and so I had to take a bus service from Schiedam.

Boarding Stena Britannica

I arrived at the international port a little bit too early today where check-in had not yet been opened. Long story short, finally they started boarding passengers at around 7:30 PM and I went to my cabin (the cheapest still available one, obviously 😛 ). This was my third time taking this ferry service, the other two being once obviously two years ago and another once three years ago in the winter, so I wouldn’t get to too much details here.

Fish and chips dinner

I had dinner at the restaurant, where I ordered a fish and chips menu. Then I walked about the boat where the facility was quite cozy. It was quite crowded, btw, and I guessed most passengers were passengers with vehicles since I did not notice a lot of “foot passengers” in the departure terminal. Anyway, the boat left the dock at around 9:50 PM and then off to the English Channel we went! I then had a big glass of cider before heading for bed.

Off to the sea!!!

I got up at 5 AM (British time), showered, packed all my stuffs, and headed down to the main deck for my breakfast. The breakfast was a buffet English breakfast which was just okay. Anyway, the walkway connecting the boat with the terminal building was broken this time (just like two years ago) so we were taken to the port with bus at 6:30 AM. I cleared immigration and waited for my train service to London Liverpool Street via Manningtree at 7:33 AM. Here, I realized I should have bought the rail and sail ticket so I could have taken the earlier 7:20 AM, haha. Anyway, both trains were on time so it was really convenient, and I arrived at London Liverpool Street station just before 9 AM.

Back in London!!

Back from London

As I would spend the whole Saturday in London, I planned to come back to Amsterdam on Sunday. Of course, this time I would just fly. And this was where I missed Garuda Indonesia’s fifth freedom Amsterdam – London-Gatwick route which they closed last year. A last-minute London (any airports, London is served by six airports, btw 😮) – Amsterdam ticket was quite expensive these days! Haha 😆 . Back in the day, Garuda still offered their promotional fare even for last-minute reservations. This time, the cheapest option would be to fly out of London at around 7 AM on Sunday but obviously I would never do that, lol 😆 . So I went with the second cheapest option that was easyJet’s afternoon flight out of London-Gatwick.

I missed Garuda Indonesia’s AMS-LGW route which they served using their Boeing 777-300ER. Pictured here was PK-GID at London-Gatwick from two years ago.

Anyway, obviously I did not have time to go around London this time. Even though I did manage to stop by for maybe 10 minutes at the Buckingham Palace as I was staying in the Victoria area, haha. Buckingham Palace was super busy at the time, due to the ceremony involving the famous royal guards there.

A royal guard at Buckingham Palace

I then took the regular train from London – Victoria Station to Gatwick Airport. It was quite convenient where the journey took about half an hour. I already checked-in online so I went straight to security and then to the departure area.

As I was quite early and actually had not had breakfast anyway, I decided to have brunch at my favorite restaurant, Jamie’s Italian, at the airport! Haha 😛 . I had their Italian steak and fries, and swapped the fries with my favorite polenta chips 😛 .

Italian steak and polenta chips at Jamie’s Italian

At about 3:20 PM, boarding for my easyJet flight EZY 8885 to Amsterdam started. Quite funnily, though, even though the gate was equipped with an air bridge, easyJet did not use it and the passengers had to board by going down and up a pair of stairs, haha. Anyway, the flight would be with an Airbus A320-200 reg G-EZWY (equipped with sharklets) and then I settled onto my 8A seat.

Breaking my flight-free streak at six weeks with this easyJet’s Airbus A320-200 reg G-EZWY

The last time I flew easyJet was three years ago, coincidentally also on the London-Gatwick – Amsterdam sector. Unsurprisingly easyJet had retrofitted their cabin in the meantime, and this time I felt like they had really generous legroom! This was made possible by the new very thin seats they installed, and this generosity obviously came with a price because easyJet still fitted their A320 with 180 seats (almost the maximum capacity of this type): the seats did not recline.

EasyJet’s new seat, very slim hence more legroom, but non-reclinable

Anyway, boarding went quite efficiently, and we took off from runway 26L. It was a typical uneventful flight with an LCC to Amsterdam. The flight attendants went on a round to sell stuffs, but I did not buy anything, haha. At 5:50 PM, we landed at Schiphol Airport. Upon arrival, I found it funny that they announced that we were about 10 minutes ahead of schedule. But actually, we landed at the friggin’ Polderbaan so the early arrival would get negated by the long taxi to the terminal we would have to do anyway, haha.

G-EZWY parked at one of the LCC stand in Pier H/M. I got off the plane (via stairs) and headed to the terminal, cleared immigration, and took the train to go back to Amsterdam 🙂 .

Menaiki kapal Stena Britannica

Makan malam dengan fish and chips

Aku makan malam di restoran kapalnya, dimana aku memesan menu fish and chips.

#1946 – Early Summer 2017 Weekend TripS (Part III: Thalys and Paris)

Thalys First Class

Aside from, obviously, the tennis tournament, one thing I was excited about this trip was how to get (and back from) to Paris, as I was travelling First Class with the high-speed train, Thalys.

A Thalys high-speed train at Gare Du Nord

I went straight from work to Amsterdam Centraal Station, well ahead of the departure because I was curious with the NS International Lounge which I could, of course, access with my ticket. In short, the lounge was underwhelming. While it was nice to be able to sit on a comfortable sofa while waiting for the train, that was pretty much it. Each person was only entitled to one serving of non-alcoholic drink as the service (They served alcohols (beers, wines) but were not free of charge). So the next time I travel first class, I wouldn’t bother to arrive at the station early just for the lounge, haha.

NS International Lounge at Amsterdam Centraal

Thalys arranges a 1-2 seat configuration in their First Class coaches (and 2-2 in Second Class). Upon booking, obviously I chose the “1” seat as it was a window AND aisle seat at the same time. My favorite kind of seat! Haha 😆 . The seat itself was quite comfortable. While it couldn’t be turned into a “flat” seat, who would need a flat seat anyway on a max. 3.5 hours train ride? Each seat also had an electric socket and each passenger was allowed to a 100 Mb complimentary data package, which was quite generous IMO.

On board Thalys’ First Class coach

There were a light snack and a dinner service on my outbound trip and a lunch service on my inbound trip. The heavy meal was served between Brussels and Paris. It made sense, as this was the longest leg and appeared to be the busiest one too. Overall, though, the meal service was just okay; pretty much similar to what you could expect on economy class long-haul flights with full service airlines. Though, this was certainly better than Second Class because nothing was served there, haha. What stood out, for me was that they served rosé wine as one option for the drinks! 😀

The dinner service on board Thalys’ First Class to Paris. The soft cheese was really good!!

From my observation, the crews appeared to be “mixed” in terms of their level of service. Some were really good and attentive, some others were not really.

Anyway, travelling with a high-speed train was always fun! Especially when travelling at full speed next to a highway, just like this:

Yep, at approximately 300 km/hour, obviously those cars in the highway were so “slow”, haha. And yep, the ride was super smooth.

Paris and French Food

Arriving on Friday evening, spending the entire Saturday at Stade Roland Garros, and leaving on Sunday at around noon meant that I did not have any time to explore Paris. Well, to be honest I did not mind at all because I have been to Paris a few times before, haha.

Though, I still managed to stop by at Louvre for my Paris selfie this year 😛

Another aspect of Paris that I really loved was, obviously, the food!!

The positive side of the, rather, underwhelming dinner service on board the Thalys ride to Paris was that I was still quite hungry upon arrival. So I went to a restaurant and ordered my must-have dish everytime I went to Paris: confit de canard! Haha 😆 . This confit de canard was not the best one, but I liked it much better than the one I had last year which did not come with any salad, haha.

My must-have dish every time I am in Paris: confit de canard

After my visit to Roland Garros, I went to my favorite restaurant nearby and ordered an escalope de veau. Actually I ordered this dish there every year, haha. Another dish which I had was bavette boeuf. Well, what can I say, French food never disappoints!

Thalys First Class

Getting to/from Bremen

The routing this long weekend to Bremen. Created with: gcmap.com

To get to Bremen, I transitted in Paris, haha 😆 . Even, I actually spent a night there where I arrived late in the afternoon and my flight to Bremen was scheduled on Sunday morning. I flew KLM’s Boeing 737-800 reg PH-BXY to get to Paris. It was a regular short-haul KLM flight so I wouldn’t get to too much details. Only that it was delayed but this, obviously, did not bother me that much.

Air France’s new lounge at Terminal 2G of Paris-CDG

Another reason I chose this routing was that my flight to Bremen would depart from Terminal 2G. A few months back, I read that Air France had just opened a new lounge in this terminal. Their old lounge there was very small and felt cramped; so I was curious how the new lounge was. And, wow, I was actually impressed!

The lounge was much more spacious than the old one!

For once, it was much more spacious than the old one. The food, drinks, etc were pretty much as per the standard of their other lounges at Paris-CDG, though. However, one feature made this lounge my favorite one at the airport: the unobstructed view towards runway 26L and 26R, making it a perfect (and comfortable) planespotting spot! 😍

Spotting a Vietnam Airlines’ Airbus A350-900 landing at runway 26L

Anyway, my AF1324 flight to Bremen was operated by HOP! Regional’s Embraer ERJ170 reg F-HBXN today. The flight was not busy at all, with load factor I estimated to be at around 25-30% only.

From Bremen, I went straight to Amsterdam. And as I mentioned, one factor I chose this flight was because KLM Cityhopper deployed one of their remaining Fokker 70s, which was PH-KZL today! KLM Cityhopper is retiring this type this Fall, and so I get to catch them while I can!! 😀 Btw, I arrived at the airport too early today and so when I went to the lounge, I was the only passenger there! Yes, the entire lounge was for myself! Haha 😛

I will definitely miss this Fokker 70’s unique 2-3 layout AND spacious legroom (an expensive commodity when flying in economy these days)!!

Bremen

The first thing I noticed about Bremen was that, apparently it was a city of tram! How did I notice? Well, it was literally stated at the tram stop at the airport, haha 😆

Bremen – City of Trams

Anyway, overall I found Bremen to be a nice little town. So actually, as a tourist, I don’t think you would need trams to go around the city center, where most of the city attractions are located. Well, probably unless you stay somewhere quite far away.

The Altstadt of Bremen

Bremen was the setting (sort of) of a popular German fairy tale, Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten (The Town Musicians of Bremen). I was introduced to this story when I was in elementary school, through one of my good friends back then who was really good at drawing (Once he made some comic strips based on this story). The story was so popular that it became the “symbol” of the city. And even there was a famous bronze statue there by the Rathaus, which I obviously took a selfie with 😛 . I was really happy that I could visit it, especially that it reminisced me about my childhood as well 🙂 . Btw there is a statue based on the same story in Riga, Latvia. So I guess the story is indeed famous in Eastern Europe as well.

The mandatory Bremen selfie with Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten

In my opinion, the most interesting part of Bremen was the Altstadt (Old Town) with all the beautiful old German buildings. Probably because I was there during a national holiday, I only saw people (possibly tourists) in the Altstadt. Everywhere else I went to, I saw no people and most shops appeared to be closed! Haha…

It was not a busy day in Bremen

As for the food, unfortunately I did not have a lot of opportunity to explore, haha. I had steak as my first lunch there. Then, I went to a tapas bar for dinner because thick cloud was hanging low appearing like it was going to rain so that I would not have the privilege to choose my restaurant, lol 😆 . Well, at least the bar was still having its happy hour for their cocktails (40% discount! 😛 ), which I ordered a good glass of long island ice tea, and the paella was good! And as my last brunch there, I had a Viennese schnitzel, haha 😆 .

Twelve days ago I went on another AvGeek Weekend Trip. As I said, at some point I hesitated going on this trip but in the end, and I am glad I did this, I decided to put aside the hesitation and still went. And here is the story of the trip 🙂 .

***

My first flight was scheduled to depart at 14:30, but I arrived at Schiphol at around 11:00 so that it was on time for brunch at KLM’s Crown Lounge, haha 😆 .

Flight: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines KL 1317
Equipment: Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGP (“Pelicaan”)
ATD: 15:05 CET (Runway 18L of AMS)
ATA: 16:25 CET (Runway 23 of BOD)

At 13:45 I went to the gate only to find out that a Transavia’s Boeing 737 (in SunWeb livery) was still there but was already ready for pushback. However, this was a sign that my flight would be delayed. This was not the best circumstance especially for today where my connecting time in Bordeaux was quite tight, so I got a little bit anxious, haha 😣.

Well, at least about two minutes after the Transavia flight’s departure, the KLM’s Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGP that would operate my flight parked at the gate. Indeed it was really quick! Good job, Schiphol!! Haha 😆 .

A KLM’s Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGP named “Pelicaan” arrived at the gate some two minutes after the departure of the Transavia flight.

Nonetheless, boarding commenced about 20 minutes behind schedule. There was also a queue for take-off at runway 18L so the plane left the ground 35 minutes after the scheduled departure time, haha.

There was nothing I could do at this point beside to just be in the moment and enjoy. So along with my complimentary snack, I ordered white wine (and this was after a couple glasses of sparkling wine earlier in the lounge). This worked, though, as I felt calmer afterwards.

The complimentary snack service on board KLM’s flight KL1317 to Bordeaux.

Anyway, at 16:25 we landed at runway 23 of Bordeaux Airport. We parked at the gate next to an easyJet’s flight that just arrived from the UK. Knowing there would likely be a border control at the airport, I rushed after deboarding. Indeed there were already quite many people forming lines at the border control, but luckily the lines went quite fast, haha.

I had to change terminals in Bordeaux because I was transferring to a domestic flight but luckily the airport was not really big. I could immediately went to the security check because I already had my boarding pass. And guess what, it was still 10 minutes ahead of boarding time! I made it! Haha 😆 .

Air France’s Airbus A321-200 reg F-GTAK at Bordeaux Airport

Of course, though, I had no time to drop by at Air France’s lounge there as boarding started not long after. Interestingly (I had never experienced this before), we were told to board as quick as possible because the airport would be closed for two hours starting from 17:30 for a training. So we had to make our 17:25 departure otherwise we would be delayed at least until 19:30.

Flight: Air France AF 7637
Equipment: Airbus A321-200 reg F-GTAK
ATD: 17:29 CET (Runway 23 of BOD)
ATA: 18:27 CET (Runway 27L of CDG)

Boarding went efficiently where I settled onto my comfortable seat 1A. I found it quite funny that at 17:19, when boarding was still ongoing, the captain announced we had 11 minutes for departure, lol 😆 . We took off at 17:29, just in time before the airport closure!! 😀

A few of these planes were already in position as we were taking off from Bordeaux

It was a pleasant domestic flight with Air France; and I especially enjoyed seat 1A! Haha 😛 . About one hour later, we landed at runway 27L of Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris.

After getting my boarding pass back to Amsterdam, I went to an Air France’s lounge. I came in with no expectation after my latest experience there just one month earlier where I was very disappointed with the meal offers. This time, though, Air France redeemed itself and the service went back to pretty much how it was before. Phew!!

Btw, the brownies in the right picture above was really, really good!

ATD: 20:29 CET (Runway 27L of CDG)
ATA: 21:10 CET (Runway 18R of AMS)

At 19:45, I left the lounge and went to the gate nearby. Not long after, boarding started for flight KL1246, which would be operated by a KLM’s Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGX. The flight was not full today so boarding went quite quickly.

Boarding a KLM’s Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGX as flight KL1246 to Amsterdam.

This was a normal Paris – Amsterdam flight. Probably because it was a late flight, KLM only served a small bag of crackers instead of the usual sandwich/wrap. At least it tasted good, though. Anyway, at 21:10 we landed at the Polderbaan in Schiphol, just six hours after taking off to Bordeaux!! Hahaha 😆 .

***

Penerbangan pertamaku dijadwalkan berangkat jam 14:30, tetapi aku tiba di Schiphol sekitar jam 11:00 supaya waktunya pas untuk brunch di Crown Lounge-nya KLM, haha 😆 .

Penerbangan: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines KL 1317
Pesawat: Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGP (“Pelicaan”)
ATD: 15:05 CET (Runway 18L of AMS)
ATA: 16:25 CET (Runway 23 of BOD)

Good job, Schiphol!! Haha 😆 .

Penerbangan: Air France AF 7637
Pesawat: Airbus A321-200 reg F-GTAK
ATD: 17:29 CET (Runway 23 of BOD)
ATA: 18:27 CET (Runway 27L of CDG)

Fiuh!!

Btw, brownies di foto sebelah kanan enak banget loh!

Penerbangan: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines KL 1246

ATD: 20:29 CET (Runway 27L of CDG)
ATA: 21:10 CET (Runway 18R of AMS)

Hahaha 😆 .

My routing to get to/back from Zurich was quite interesting:

The routing this long weekend. Created with gcmap.com

Yep, I flew Amsterdam – Paris CDG – Rome FCO – Amsterdam, haha 😆 .

Departure to Zurich

My KLM Amsterdam – Paris flight departed from an “unusual” gate at Schiphol. Usually, an Air France/KLM Amsterdam – Paris vv flight uses a gate in Pier C of Schiphol. This one, though, used gate D61, thus indicating (to me) that the plane was used from a non-Schengen route before my KL1233 flight to Paris.

Delayed flight to Paris

Anyway, the flight was delayed today due to its late arrival from Birmingham (See, my guess was correct 😀 ). I wasn’t worried with my connection as the delay wasn’t that bad and I had enough transit time in Paris.

It was another full flight today with a Boeing 737-800 reg PH-BXE that was named “Havik”. It was a regular Amsterdam – Paris flight where we took off from Polderbaan and landed at runway 27R of Paris – Charles De Gaulle.

A KLM’s Boeing 737-800 reg PH-BXE

Obviously, I waited at a Salon Air France in Paris. During my latest AvGeek Weekend Trip, the lounge was closed for a renovation. So obviously I was quite excited to see the “new” lounge.

I was disappointed with the renovation result. The small alley connecting the two sides of the lounge was removed and I only noticed minor changes with the furniture. What disappointed me the most was, however, the food service. Only few things were served in the food area. Considering this was an Air France lounge in their main hub (Paris – Charles De Gaulle Airport), this was sad.

The food service at an Air France’s lounge in Paris. This looked sad to me.

My flight AF1814 to Zurich departed on time. It was operated with an Airbus A318 reg F-GUGK. We took off from runway 26R of Paris – CDG and then headed east towards Zurich. As before, I felt like the complimentary snack quality in Air France decreased this year. They served vegetarian sandwich in this flight. While it was bigger than KLM’s sandwich, it was much less tasty to me; which was a shame considering they were French 😦 .

A vegetarian sandwich as a complimentary snack

Anyway, about one hour later, we landed at runway 28 of Zurich – Kloten Airport. Here is the landing video:

To my liking, we parked at a remote stand upon arrival, where the passengers were, then, brought by a bus to the terminal building, haha.

An Air France’s Airbus A318 reg F-GUGK

Back to the Netherlands

I was excited especially for my first flight because: (1) it would be operated with an airline I had never tried before (Alitalia CityLiner) and (2) it would be operated with an airplane type I had never tried before (Embraer ERJ175). Yeay!! 😀

I arrived at Zurich – Kloten Airport about two hours before the flight. After checking-in and passing security, I headed to a Dnata lounge. The lounge was nice enough for an “off airport” SkyTeam lounge (Zurich Airport was more of a Star Alliance Airport, given that it was the main hub of Swiss International Air Lines). I was still full with my complimentary breakfast at the hotel, though, so I was not really in the mood of eating anything in the lounge anyway.

Dnata Lounge at Zurich – Kloten

Boarding went quite smoothly, where the 88-seater Alitalia CityLine Embraer ERJ175 reg EI-RDG was ready to take us to Rome – Fiumicino. It was a regular Alitalia flight, where a bag of mini chocolate biscuits was served with some limited selection of drinks. The weather in Rome was also nice today, as we were landing in runway 34R of Fiumicino Airport. Here is the landing video:

Again, I was happy that the plane parked at a remote stand today, haha 😛 .

An Alitalia CityLiner’s Embraer ERJ175 reg EI-RDG upon arrival in Rome-Fiumicino

My transit time was not very long today and I knew that Alitalia’s lounge was quite far away. So I decided to walk briskly there, had a quick lunch for 15 minutes, then went back to the departure area, haha 😛 . The food in the lounge was quite good, though, in my opinion. The lounge lady was also super friendly. Yeah, still pretty much the same impression of the last time 🙂 .

The food service at Alitalia’s Schengen lounge

My AZ110 flight back to Amsterdam was operated with an Airbus A320-200 reg EI-DTA. Here is a timelapsed video of the departure from Rome-Fiumicino:

It was an uneventful flight with Alitalia. This flight made me realize that, indeed, Alitalia had cut “cost” big time with their services on board. When I asked the flight attendant what they served as drinks, it turned out that they only had water, tea, coffee, and cola. Yep, that was all. No juice, no beer/wine. For snacks, on the 2 hours and 15 minutes flight to Amsterdam, the choices were only biscuits or crackers. Given that Alitalia has been struggling financially, this might not be of a big surprise, though.

Complimentary snack and drink on board Alitalia’s AZ110

We landed at runway 36R of Schiphol Airport. This was a convenient runway where the taxi time to the terminal building was very short, haha. I got off the plane, and then took the train back to Amsterdam. Here, my short long weekend ended 🙂 .

Ruteku long weekend ini. Dibuat dengan gcmap.com

Yep, aku terbang Amsterdam – Paris CDG – Rome FCO – Amsterdam, haha 😆 .

Di sini, perjalanan singkat long weekend-ku berakhir 🙂 .

Getting There

To go to Rome, we took the business class high-speed Frecciarossa train from Firenze – Santa Maria Novella to Roma Termini. As in our trip to Firenze (read Part III), the business class tickets were cheaper than economy when we bought them, haha 😆 . With the high-speed train, the almost 300 km ride was done in less than two hours.

The Vatican Museum

Anyway, I only had half a day with my parents and brother in Rome. Originally we planned to make use of the time by going to the Colosseum. But then, we made a last minute switch of plan to the Vatican Museum instead.

The always crowded St. Peter's Square in Vatican City
The always crowded St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City

My brother and I planned to visit it in our year end 2012 trip but could not because it was already closed due to the holiday season and stuffs. And I really wanted to show them this amazing museum (It is still my most favorite museum in Europe, btw; even more than Louvre!), which I last visited in 2010. So there we went!! 😀

Vatican Museum
Vatican Museum

Luckily we did not have to queue for too long to enter the museum this time. But it was still very crowded inside, probably because today was a Saturday, haha. As before, I enjoyed my time a lot in the museum. It was not only its collection, but the interior itself was super mesmerizing!! It was definitely worth the entrance fee!! 🙂

The School of Athens by Raphael at the Vatican Museum
The School of Athens by Raphael at the Vatican Museum

The one part of the museum my parents really wanted to see was the one and only Sistine Chapel, where Michaelangelo’s super famous The Creation of Adam was located. As in six years ago, people were not allowed to take any pictures inside the Chapel; and the securities were really strict about it! Haha…

Another part of the museum I would want them to see was the photogenic Instagrammable purple spiral stairs near the exit, haha 😆 . I was not very satisfied with the photo I took six years ago so I was glad I got another chance now! 😛

Roma

Anyway, as usual, Rome was a nice city for a vacation, even though we were quite unlucky that the weather today was not the best.

From Vatican City, we made a stop at the Colosseum. It was already too late for entrance, so we decided to just walk around it.

For dinner, we decided to dine at my favorite pasta restaurant in Rome: Pastarito! Haha 😆 . As in my previous visits there, obviously I ordered the super delicious bucatini carbonara! Haha 😀 . And I still loved it! 😀

I took the Leonardo Express train to Rome-Fiumicino Airport from Roma Termini. The total trip was in less than 30 minutes so it was quite convenient.

After checking-in and passing the security check, I was looking for Alitalia’s lounge for Schengen flights. However, it was located quite far away from the SkyTeam departure hall, which was unfortunate, in my opinion; even though it was probably due to space limitation. Nonetheless, the lounge facility was quite good in my opinion, actually even better to me than the non-Schengen counterpart at the same airport.

Anyway, the flight today would be operated with KLM’s Boeing 737-800 reg PH-BXC. Everything about the flight went quite smoothly, today. After take-off, a mini snack service with drinks were served. Overall, it was a regular uneventful but pleasant flight with KLM, as usual. At 12:12 PM, we landed at the infamous Polderbaan of Schiphol.

Menuju Roma

The always crowded St. Peter's Square in Vatican City

Satu bagian museum yang ingin banget orangtuaku kunjungi adalah Kapel Sistina, dimana karya super terkenalnya Michaelangelo, The Creation of Adam, berada.

Getting to Genova

The flying route map today. Created with gcmap.com
The flying route map today. Created with gcmap.com

There was no direct Amsterdam – Genova flight on the day of our travel so we had to transit at Paris – Charles De Gaulle (CDG). Upon checking-in, we got an unpleasant news where my parents and brother were on stand-by on the Paris-CDG – Genova flight (We were not in the same tickets as I would return to Amsterdam from Rome while they would continue to Spain), while my seat was confirmed, due to overbooking. The check-in agent at Schiphol was not able to change anything in their system so she suggested us to contact the transfer desk at Paris – CDG. It was quite annoying, but for whatever reason I was not really annoyed, haha.

Anyway, I could guest one person to the KLM Crown Lounge at Schiphol. We decided that my brother would go with me to the lounge while my parents would window-shop at the airport, haha. We had our early dinner at the lounge where, coincidentally, one of the warm dishes was pasta, haha!

At 17:00, we went to the gate where we met our parents. Not long after, boarding started. The flight today would be operated with KLM’s Boeing 737-800 reg PH-BXL. Long story short, it was a regular Amsterdam – Paris flight with KLM so I would not write too many details here, haha.

Upon arriving in Paris, we went to Air France’s transfer desk at Terminal 2F. The agent mentioned that my parents and brother’s status on the flight had been confirmed, meaning they got to fly to Genova this evening! Phew!! The nice agent also apologized for the system which must have made us worried.

But then, I noticed that my father was assigned to my confirmed seat. And so I asked the transfer agent, who, then, stated that apparently I had been upgraded to Europe business class!! Ahahah!! 😆 Yep, my second upgraded flight in January! 😛 So definitely I was not complaining 😛 .

As our flight would be operated by HOP! Regional, we had to go to Terminal 2G. So we did. Long story short, it was boarding time.

We boarded HOP! Regional’s Embraer ERJ170 reg F-HBXM. I settled onto my 1C seat, enjoying my Europe business class experience, haha. Once almost all passengers boarded, however, the captain announced that there was an ICT problem with the plane’s computer that we needed to change plane 😣.

So we all deboarded the plane and went back into Terminal 2G. While this was certainly inconvenient, I did understand this sort of disruption could always happen. I did not blame the airline for it, in fact I agreed with the captain’s decision not to fly with a clearly malfunctioning plane, no? Haha…

At least this incident happened at Paris – CDG, HOP! Regional’s main base so it was not difficult to find a replacement plane. About 30 minutes later, we were allowed to board another Embraer ERJ170, this one had registration F-HBXG. Then, I settled onto my 1C seat where I noticed there was a slight interior difference between F-HBXM and F-HBXG.

Long story short, we departed about one hour behind schedule. Once we took off and reached the cruising altitude, the FA distributed wet towels (like, “real” towels instead of tissues 😛 ) to Europe business class passengers. Then, the dinner service followed not long after. The dinner consisted of a cold platter with cheese and a raspberry tartlet, accompanied with a selection of drink which I opted for their champagne! Haha 😛

Overall it was a smooth flight towards Genova. There was mini turbulence just before landing at runway 28 of Genova’s Cristoforo Colombo Airport.

After taking our luggage, we took a taxi to go to our hotel in the city center of Genova.

Genova

Due to our late arrival, we only had about half a day to spend in Genova; which we found to be the ideal amount of time to spend in the city, haha.

Wet day in Genova

Unfortunately, though, the weather was not the best today where it was drizzling pretty much during the entirety of our half a day in Genova. Nonetheless, we still managed to walk around the city, haha. Genova was not very big, where everything was pretty much within walking distance.

In general, I would split Geneva into two (touristy) regions: the old town and the port, haha. As I call it, the old town was the old part of the city, haha. It was a typical Italian city, though, where it was not exactly really “clean” but this was what made it “uniquely Italian”, in my opinion, haha. And the drizzle actually added onto the atmosphere as well, somehow.

The port was, well, a port, haha. It was not the most beautiful port or marina I had ever seen, as in the distance I could see some containers. But its contrast with the old Italian building just accross the street made it interesting.

Btw, regarding the safety, it was actually fine when we walked during the day. However, our hotel guy mentioned that we should avoid some streets during the night, for safety reason, hmmm…

Menuju Genova

The flying route map today. Created with gcmap.com

Jam 5 sore, kami menuju gerbang dimana kami bertemu orangtua kami.

Ahahah!! 😆 Iya dong, upgrade keduaku di bulan Januari! 😛 Jelas dong ya aku senang, haha 😛 .

Karena penerbangan ini dioperasikan oleh HOP! Regional, kami pergi ke Terminal 2G. Singkat cerita, waktunya naik pesawat.

Kami menaiki pesawat Embraer ERJ170nya HOP!

Lalu, layanan makan malam dibagikan tak lama kemudian.
