#1971 – A Summer Weekend in London (Part I: The Flights)

KL977 (AMS-LCY)

I was quite excited for this trip because it would be the first time I flew on a non-Schengen flight out of Schiphol since September 2016 when I flew to Sint Maarten! Haha 😆 . This also meant that I hadn’t used KLM’s non-Schengen Crown Lounge since then. I just realized though that I liked the Schengen lounge better actually.

Anyway, obviously I chose a KLM flight to get to London-City; and what excited me even more was the flight would be operated with one of the two Avro RJ85s they leased from CityJet! Yep, Avro RJ85! The cute regional jet with four engines!!

Flight: KLM KL 977 operated by CityJet
Equipment: Avro RJ85 reg EI-RJU
ATD: 12:11 CET (Runway 36L of AMS)
ATA: 11:55 BST (Runway 27 of LCY)

Boarding was slightly delayed today, but it went on quite smoothly. After all passengers boarded, however, the captain announced that due to a congestion on the departure runway (due to bad weather in Amsterdam today), we were only cleared to depart in 20 minutes. But not long after, the captain announced that the Polderbaan was open for departure and if he agreed to use this runway, we could depart now. He thought the long taxi there was better than sitting in the tarmac for 20 minutes doing nothing, haha; and I fully agreed with him on this case. So there we went, another departure from Polderbaan! Haha 😆

Another departure from Polderbaan

Anyway, I loved flying the Avro RJ85. It was a small plane but was very stable on air; thus comfortable even though the 3-3 configuration felt a little bit “cramped” in my opinion for its fuselage size. As it was a flight operated for KLM, the snack service was as per KLM’s standard:

The snack service on board CityJet’s flight KL977

which was decent for a short 45 minutes. Having said that, the cabin crews were CityJet’s, even when the flight was operated for KLM. Well, at least they wore CityJet’s uniform.

An aspect I was excited for this particular flight was the landing. I was really, really hoping we would land at runway 09 of London-City Airport. The view while landing there would be spectacular as the plane would have to descend above the city of London along with the cool skyscrapers! This was one of the reasons why LCY was my favorite. I landed there in 2013 but didn’t take a video so I planned to do so this time, haha.

But then, as we were flying from the east, we kept descending and descending above the River Thames without making any turn. Then I realized that we were NOT landing at runway 09 but at runway 27 instead! DAMN!!! Damn you wind direction!! Here is the landing video at runway 27:

Well, I guess this means I would need to fly to London City again in the future? Hahaha 😆 .

Anyway, another reason why I loved London City Airport was its small and compact size. A small airport meant short taxi and quick line at immigration (and baggage belt). I got off the airport in, like, literally less than 20 minutes since EI-RJU touched down at runway 27.

Deboarding at London City Airport from this CityJet’s Avro RJ 85 reg EI-RJU.

KL994 (LCY-AMS)

To go back to Amsterdam, I chose a KLM flight that was operated by KLM Cityhopper. Btw, KLM’s mainline Boeing 737 fleet cannot fly to London City Airport because the airport is too small for them. The runway length is just 1,508 meter; that is only around 2/3 of, say, the length of Adisutjipto Airport’s runway in Yogyakarta.

It was a small airport and unfortunately SkyTeam did not have a lounge partner there. But the general waiting area was nonetheless comfortable, especially that I scored a seat by the window which had electrical plugs and free wifi and offered this view:

An amazing view at the departure area of London City Airport

😍😍😍😍😍

I sat there for a good two-hour, haha.

Flight: KLM KL 994 operated by KLM Cityhopper
Equipment: Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EZF
ATD: 18:08 BST (Runway 27 of LCY)
ATA: 19:51 CET (Runway 36R of AMS)

Boarding today was, unfortunately, quite chaotic. I found it weird actually that given the high frequency of KLM flights between London City and Amsterdam (up to 7 times daily on a weekday), there was no SkyPriority sign and line to help the boarding process. Sure SkyPriority passengers were announced to board first but it was basically useless as there was no actual line and in reality passengers standing closer to the gate would board first anyway.

A KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EZF

Btw, when scanning my mobile boarding pass, the scanner notified the boarding agent that, apparently, I had been upgraded to Europe Business Class! YESSS!!! Haha 😆 . I was moved from my original 9F seat to 1D and was given a new boarding pass. The downside of this, though, was that I no longer had a window seat 😞. Anyway, so I boarded PH-EZF, a KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer ERJ190, and settled onto my 1D seat. And of course the legroom was amazing, haha 😆 .

Amazing legroom in Europe Business Class; row 1

It was literally a full flight today, i.e. the load factor in both economy and Europe business class were 100%. So I was intrigued with our take-off today given London City Airport’s short runway, haha. We took off from runway 27; and it turned out that a full Embraer ERJ190 didn’t always need the full 1,508 meter of runway length to take off.

Take off was quite bumpy today, as we were making a u-turn above the city of London (which beautiful view I couldn’t really see due to my aisle seat) towards Amsterdam. After the fasten seat belt sign was turned off, the flight attendant offered any drink to us, which I asked for a cup of green tea. She brought me my green tea and my dinner service. Upon which I also asked for a bottle of champagne, hahaha 😛.

The dinner service on board flight KL994 in Europe Business Class

To my delight, the dinner service today was different from the dinner service on board my previous KLM Europe Business Class flight just two weeks earlier. The main dish was salad with chicken teriyaki skewer and two pieces of warm bread which were really nice. A small cup of potato-salmon salad was also served as the appetizer along with a small cup of chocolate and caramel dessert. This dish kept me busy during the entire flight, where we had started our descent towards Schiphol when I finished it. Though, I still had about a third glass of champagne which I finished in one gulp (🙈) because the crews already had to prepare for landing, haha.

Anyway, we landed at runway 36R of Schiphol and it was not a long taxi to the Fokker Farm. We were taken by a bus to the terminal. I cleared immigration, and went back home to Amsterdam.

KL977 (AMS-LCY)

Pesawat: Avro RJ85 reg EI-RJU
ATD: 12:11 CET (Runway 36L of AMS)
ATA: 11:55 BST (Runway 27 of LCY)

😍😍😍😍😍

Aku duduk di sana sekitar dua jam-an lah, haha.

Penerbangan: KLM KL 994 dioperasikan oleh KLM Cityhopper
Pesawat: Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EZF
ATD: 18:08 BST (Runway 27 of LCY)
ATA: 19:51 CET (Runway 36R of AMS)

Ia membawakan teh hijauku beserta layanan makanannya.

#1967 – Another Weekend Story

ENGLISH

Posts in the A Summer Weekend in London series:
1. Introduction
2. Part I: The Flights
3. Part II: London

As my Instagram followers (@azilko) have known, I went on yet another weekend trip this weekend! Haha 😛 . This time, I went back to: London!!

The ultimate mandatory tourist-in-London selfie

Yep, I know that I was just literally in London a month ago for an impromptu weekend trip for Wimbledon. But indeed that was the point, that trip was entirely for Wimbledon so I didn’t have any time to enjoy London, my favorite European city, itself, haha.

To make this trip more fun, I decided that I would fly to my most favorite airport of London (London is served by six airports, btw): London City Airport (LCY)! At the time I realized that despite this airport being my favorite, the last time I flew there was actually in 2013 when I was flying back to Rotterdam with CityJet’s Fokker 50 after a conference in London in my first year of PhD. That was already more than FOUR years ago! 😱

I got upgraded to Europe Business Class AGAIN!!

And also, remember that two weeks ago I got upgraded to Europe Business Class on my KLM Berlin to Amsterdam flight. As it turned out, this time I got upgraded to Europe Business Class AGAIN on my KLM Cityhoppr KL994 flight from London City to Amsterdam!! Awesome, eh!! Hahaha 😆

I knew London was my favorite city so I knew what to expect. I knew that I would enjoy it because, well, London. So all in all it was, indeed, a really fun weekend. As usual, here are some teasers of the trip:

3. Part II: London

While boarding for my Amsterdam-Paris flight AF1341 was on time, I felt a little bit anxious today because it took awhile to complete. You see, my connecting time in Paris was only 50 minutes and two years ago this short transit time backfired on me. At the time I missed my connecting flight in Paris due to delayed departure from Amsterdam (because of de-icing).

The first flight today was with this Air France’s Airbus A321-200 reg F-GTAD

Anyway, the flight today was operated with Air France’s Airbus A321-200 reg F-GTAD. And, as usual, it was a regular pleasant Amsterdam – Paris flight. As the last time, I felt like the complimentary snack service on board an Air France’s mainline short-haul European flight had decreased in quality a little bit.

The complimentary snack on board flight AF1341. The snack used to be better. This was like HOP!’s level of service last year.

Thank to the buffer time in the schedule, we only got in Paris 5 minutes late. It was not bad at all given that my connecting flight would depart from the same pier.

But then, as it turned out, my connecting Paris – Lyon flight AF7644 was delayed for about 1 hour due to technical problem! Lol 😆 . They had to find a replacement aircraft, which meant they would have to “downgrade” the flight from an A321 to an A320 that was smaller. Consequently, a few passengers were called in the gate, presumably because they needed to be moved to some other flights because of this downgrade. Thankfully, I wasn’t one of them.

Lunch at Air France’s Lounge at Paris-CDG

Anyway, I used this now extra time to have lunch at an Air France’s lounge. The lounge at the pier was closed due to some renovation work so I had to go to the lounge in the next pier. Due to capacity constraint, they did not let qualified passengers to invite guests into the lounge, which infuriated one guy in front of me.

When it was boarding time, I went to the gate. And for the first time ever, my flight would depart from a remote stand of Paris – Charles De Gaulle Airport!! 😍 So they had to take the passengers to the plane with buses, and we got to board via stairs! 😀

Second flight today with this Air France’s Airbus A320-200 reg F-GKXO. We gotta board via stairs!

The flight today would be operated with an Air France’s Airbus A320-200 reg F-GKXO. I was originally seated in seat 1A but I was asked to move to seat 1C because I had two toddlers and their mother sitting next to me, and the older toddler would need to sit in a window seat 😣. Anyway, it was another regular flight to Lyon.

At Lyon Airport, I checked-in for my flight back to Amsterdam. After passing security, I went to an Air France’s salon there. I just intended to ask whether the lounge after immigration still welcomed SkyTeam Elite Plus passengers (It did in August, see AvGeek Weekend Trip #4). Luckily I asked because apparently it did not anymore, even though the attendant did not seem to be really sure about it.

Artsy stuff at Lyon – St. Exupery Airport

I waited there a little bit, but then I was bored. You see, Air France’s lounge at Lyon Airport was really underwhelming (read AvGeek Weekend Trip #3). And so I decided to leave, pass the immigration, and try my luck at the lounge after that. It turned out the attendant was correct, the lounge no longer took SkyTeam Elite Plus passengers 😦 . As there was no way to go back to Air France’s lounge, I just waited at the departure hall.

Third flight today with this KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EZB.

The flight back to Amsterdam would be operated with a KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EZB. It went on time, really smooth, very efficient, and pleasant; just like any other typical KLM flight 🙂 . Just after 19:30, I was already back at Schiphol, haha 😆 .

I had dinner at the airport before heading back to Delft. And here, this short AvGeek Weekend Trip of mine ended 🙂 .

Walaupun boarding penerbangan AF1341 Amsterdam-Parisku berlangsung tepat waktu, aku sedikit merasa was-was karena prosesnya berlangsung lama.

The weather in Amsterdam was not quite cooperative this morning. The fog was quite thick which limited Schiphol’s runways use for safety reason. Consequently, my 10:40 flight was delayed to 11:30. Luckily I spared quite a lot of transit time in Paris so I wasn’t worried at all. I just enjoyed my now extra time at KLM Crown Lounge, haha.

Anyway, today’s flight was operated with Air France’s Airbus A321-200 reg F-GTAM. It was a regular Air France’s Amsterdam-Paris flight so I wouldn’t get to too much details here. However, I did feel that the quality of the complimentary snack they served on the flight had been reduced, though.

Just like in my 4th AvGeek Weekend Trip, I had to change airports in Paris, haha. Thank to my Flying Blue Gold membership, I was entitled for free transfer between the two airports with Le Bus Direct (one way journey would have cost €21).

Unlike in my 4th AvGeek Weekend Trip, this time my flight was scheduled to depart from Hall 20 of Orly Airport. And there was an Air France lounge in this hall, yeay! Haha 😆 . Anyway, the lounge was descent, though the food selection could have been more substantial especially given that it was the after lunch-time period, in my opinion.

We took off from runway 08 of Paris – Orly Airport, and then made a southward turn towards Marseille. Again, it was a pleasant uneventful flight with Air France. A mini snack and drink service was provided about halfway through to Marseille. About an hour later, we landed at runway 31L of Marseille Provence Airport.

Marseille

As you know, just a week before, I also spent my weekend in Marseille. So it indeed felt quite “weird” for me to be back there this weekend, haha 😆 .

Today was a super beautiful day in Marseille as well!!
A beautiful sunny day in Marseille!!

Obviously there was not much difference; but the weather was much better this weekend. There was almost no cloud and on Sunday, the sun was shining and it was about 16°C!!

The lounge at Marseille Provence Airport was small but, in my opinion, provided really good service. I really loved it! 🙂

Air France’s Airbus A320-200 reg F-GKXG

Anyway, the flight today was operated by Air France’s Airbus A320-200 reg F-GKXG. Luckily, it departed on time (I had quite a tight connection time in Bordeaux). I settled onto my bulkhead 2A seat after boarding. Again, the domestic flight was not full this afternoon.

As before, this as another pleasant and uneventful flight with Air France. At 16:04, we landed at runway 23 of Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport. Here is the landing video:

Quick Transit in Bordeaux

My domestic flight from Marseille parked at Terminal B while my connecting international flight to Amsterdam was scheduled to depart from Terminal A at 17:00. So I was quite in a rush to move between the two terminals given my quite tight transit time. Having said that, I found our gate in Terminal B to be super convenient as it was basically next to the airport exit door! Lol 😆

This flight to Amsterdam was quite a full flight with a lot of connecting passengers (out of Amsterdam). So no wonder the crew tried to leave Bordeaux as soon as possible given the headwind to Amsterdam we would face today.

Anyway, the flight would be operated with KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EZF. Not long after settling in my seat 9A, we departed and took off from runway 23.

At around 17:30, the complimentary snack service (a wrap, which was quite nice) was distributed. Overall it was a pleasant flight with KLM, as usual. Btw, this flight also highlighted the noisiness of an Embraer ERJ190, hence enhancing further my take on ERJ190 vs CRJ1000, haha.

At 18:46, we landed at Schiphol Airport. The taxiing was quite long today, despite we were not landing in the Polderbaan, haha. We parked at the famous Fokker Farm and were taken by a bus to the airport terminal. I had my dinner at a restaurant at the airport before heading back to Delft with train.

Landing at runway 09L of Paris - Charles De Gaulle Airport

Paris – Orly

Salon Air France at Orly Airport

#1891 – My Saturday Story

ENGLISH

Soo, my Instagram followers (@azilko) would have known by now that this Saturday I went on my second AvGeek Weekend Trip this year! Haha 😆 .

I booked these flights a few months ago when I was looking at my 2017 calendar and realized that I had not yet made any flying plan for March, lol 😆 🙈 . At the time I was browsing for some possibilities, and booked one that was reasonably priced and scheduled (Nowadays, schedule is even more important to me because I don’t want to get up way too early on a Saturday!)

So consequently it became a little bit difficult to find an “interesting” routing (no need for an extra dimension to be added there!). In the end, what I got was Amsterdam – Paris CDG – Lyon – Amsterdam, haha. Yep, very similar to my fourth AvGeek Weekend Trip last year, except that I did not need to change airports in Paris.

Anyway, just like my first AvGeek Weekend Trip this year, I am not sure yet if I will write a post about this short trip in more details (I haven’t even finished my Post PhD Trips series!). So just in case I won’t, here are some pictures from the trip! 😀

BAHASA INDONESIA

#1880 – A Weekend Trip to … Marseille

ENGLISH

As my Instagram (@azilko) followers would have known by now, I went on, yet, another weekend trip this weekend. Yep, I know, I just had a weekend trip a week ago and this weekend I went on another one, haha 😛 .

This time, the destination was … Marseille. Yes!! Marseille, again!! Lol 😆 . I know, my weekend trip last week was also to Marseille and this weekend I was back there! Haha 😛 .

Today was a super beautiful day in Marseille as well!!
Today was a super beautiful day in Marseille as well!!

This was actually a coincidence. I planned the trip this weekend way back in August last year when I felt like planning some weekend getaway in the future as I was stressed of finishing my PhD dissertation, haha. Then, it happened that this January, my parents and brother chose Marseille as a city they would like to visit during their trip to Europe. And last weekend was the perfect fit for their schedule.

And so that was it. I went to Marseille in back to back weekends! Haha 😛 .

Actually I planned this weekend trip as my first Avgeek Weekend Trip this year, though, where the focus was on the flights; you know, as I have been to Marseille in 2014 anyway. This time, this is the routing:

The routing this weekend :P . Created with gcmap.com
The routing this weekend 😛 . Created with gcmap.com

Yep, Amsterdam – Paris CDG, then Paris ORY – Marseille – Bordeaux – Amsterdam, haha 😛 .

I am not sure if I will write a post about this trip, though, as I still have my Post PhD Trip series coming up as well. But we will see. But just in case the story won’t be here, here are some photos from the trip! 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

Haha 😛

Today was a super beautiful day in Marseille as well!!

The routing this weekend :P . Created with gcmap.com
Rute perjalananku akhir pekan kali ini 😛 . Dibuat dengan gcmap.com

Yep, Amsterdam – Paris CDG, lalu Paris ORY – Marseille – Bordeaux – Amsterdam, haha 😛 .

#1849 – A Winter Weekend in Frankfurt

ENGLISH

Earlier this month, I went to Frankfurt in a weekend trip to go to the famous Christmas Market being held there. Here is the story…

***

Getting to Frankfurt

KLM Cityhopper logo
Flight: KLM KL1767 operated by KLM Cityhopper
Equipment: Fokker 70 reg PH-KZK
ATD: 12:36 CET (Runway 36C of AMS)
ATA: 13:19 CET (Runway 07R of FRA)

To go to Frankfurt, at first I was torn to fly KLM or Lufthansa. KLM offered the cheaper tickets (by just €6) at the time while I had never tried (mainline) Lufthansa. But then for some reason I decided to still go with KLM. It turned out to be a wise decision as Lufthansa pilots went on an extended strike in the week of this trip, cancelling a lot of their flights! It was nice to avoid the uncertainty of a cancelled flight prior to the trip, of course!

My journey to Schiphol took a little bit longer (15 minutes) due to a planned maintenance work on the railway track between Leiden and Schiphol. Anyway, it was nice to fly a SkyTeam airline again where I could enjoy my SkyPriority benefit. After the security check at Schiphol, I went to KLM’s Crown Lounge to have some brunch. The plane was parked at a remote stand today so we were taken by a bus to the Fokker Farm.

A KLM Cityhopper's Fokker 70 reg PH-KZK

Flight KL1767 today would be operated with KLM Cityhopper’s Fokker 70 reg PH-KZK. I was super glad that I got the chance to fly a Fokker 70 again this time, before KLM fully retires all of them by the end of next year! 😦

Anyway, the flight was a standard KLM intra-European flight: nice and efficient. We took off from runway 36C of Schiphol and 43 minutes later, we landed at runway 07R of Frankfurt Airport.

Frankfurt

I took the regional S-Bahn train to Frankfurt’s Hauptbahnhof. From there, I walked to my hotel. I have to say it looked much shorter in the map, though.

Anyway, as I mentioned, it was a nice 5-star hotel that was part of a famous world-wide chain. My room was at the 34th floor so I got a nice view of the city! I have to say, it was not everyday I got this kind of view, especially in Europe!!

The view from my room on the 34th floor in Frankfurt.

After some rest in the afternoon, I went to the Altstadt. I was super hungry so I decided to have some dinner first at a restaurant nearby. I was so hungry that I just went in to the first restaurant that I saw, haha 😆 . I have to say the restaurant was really touristic, but overall it was nonetheless okay. I had a Frankfurter schnitzel (including the green sauce that was the trandmark) and a glass of beer.

After dinner, I went to the Christmas Market. The story from the Christmas Market has been published some time ago 🙂 . In short, it was really nice to finally visit a German Christmas Market!! 😀

Glühwein and the Christmas Market
Finally visiting a German Christmas Market!!

It was really cold that evening (it turned out that this part of Europe was struck by some cold icy wind or so); so I went straight back to my hotel after a couple of hours in the market. I wasn’t feeling too well that week prior to the trip due to the cold weather; and somehow I felt like the flu might have come back this evening. Again, I was not sick, I could feel the sign that I was not 100% fit. So that evening I decided to order a pasta dish from the hotel’s room service to fill my stomach, haha. The pasta was quite good, actually, and was actually good value of money if you ask me.

Back to the Netherlands

After breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant, I checked-out and immediately went to the airport. I had quite a morning flight today, haha. I should probably have booked a later flight so I could chill a bit more. But well…

Flight: KLM KL1766 operated by KLM Cityhopper
Equipment: Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EXA
ATD: 12:03 CET (Runway 07C of FRA)
ATA: 12:48 CET (Runway 36R of AMS)

I waited for my flight at the Air France – KLM Lounge at Frankfurt Airport. It was convenient too that the gate was located not far away from the lounge. Anyway, today the plane was parked at a remote stand, again, so we were taken by bus for boarding.

The KL1766 flight today would be operated with KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EXA.

I settled onto my 9F seat. Not long after that, one of the FAs approached me and asked if I was “Mr. Zilko” while looking at the tablet. Well, this sounded quite familiar, haha 😛 . Anyway, so the emergency row seat was empty today so she invited me, as a Flying Blue Gold flyer, to move there if I wanted to; and I was allowed to choose any of the four seats, haha. Well, it was not an “upgrade” to business class like the last time (lol), but it was still good especially with the great legroom AND the seat next to me would be unoccupied. Yeay! 😀

The legroom of an emergency seat on board a KLM Cityhopper's Embraer 190
Upgraded to an emergency seat on board a KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer 190!!

We had to wait for a second batch of passengers to board the plane. Once they did, the doors were closed, and we departed. Again, it was a nice short-haul flight with KLM. We took off from runway 07C of Frankfurt Airport and 45 minutes later, we landed at runway 36R of Schiphol Airport.

The maintenance on the railway track occurred the entire weekend, so I had to take the bus to Leiden Centraal. From there, I took the Intercity train to Delft.

BAHASA INDONESIA

***

Berangkat ke Frankfurt

KLM Cityhopper logo
Penerbangan: KLM KL1767 dioperasikan oleh KLM Cityhopper
Pesawat: Fokker 70 reg PH-KZK
ATD: 12:36 CET (Runway 36C of AMS)
ATA: 13:19 CET (Runway 07R of FRA)

The view from my room on the 34th floor in Frankfurt.

Glühwein and the Christmas Market

A second dinner this evening, a pasta (kids menu)

Ah, tapi sudahlah…

Pesawat: Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EXA
ATD: 12:03 CET (Runway 07C of FRA)
ATA: 12:48 CET (Runway 36R of AMS)

Hore! 😀

The legroom of an emergency seat on board a KLM Cityhopper's Embraer 190
