Off to Marseille

My flight to Marseille was on Friday evening. So from work, I headed directly to Schiphol, where I had my dinner at KLM Crown Lounge, haha.

A little bit uncharacteristically here, I will not write in a lot of details regarding my flight to Marseille, haha. In short, I was flying Air France’s flight AF1875 operated by their Airbus A319-100 reg F-GPMA. It was a regular pleasant flight with Air France; and at 22:16, we landed at runway 13L of Marseille – Provence Airport.

Anyway, it had been quite a long Friday for me so understandably I was already so tired when arriving in Marseille. I knew I would want to take the bus service to the city center. I took a bus but without checking its destination, assuming any bus leaving the airport would go to Marseille.

About 30 minutes into the trip, I realized something strange. I did not recognize any similarity of the surrounding from my last trip to Marseille in 2014. I checked my gps and, indeed, instead of going east towards Marseille, I was going north 😣. Yep, it came to my realization that I took the WRONG bus! Then I just remembered my survey of Marseille from 2014 where, indeed, there were several bus destinations from Marseille Airport. Well, it was too late to remember that at this point.

The bus terminal of Aix-en-Provence

The bus terminal of Aix-en-Provence

It turned out that my bus was going to Aix-en-Provence, a small town to the north of Marseille. Upon arriving at the bus station, I asked the bus driver if there was still a bus to go to Marseille. Luckily, there was. There was one LAST bus departing at 23:35 which I could take. Phew!!

Long story short, I took the bus, arrived in Marseille just right after midnight, Whats-apped my brother to pick me up at the hotel lobby, then slept, haha 😛 .

Marseille

Palais Longchamp

Palais Longchamp

As before, Marseille was a nice city in Southern France and we did enjoy our time there. The weather there that weekend was not the best, though. It was very windy, despite definitely warmer than the Netherlands (where it was snowing 😆 ) even though not super warm as well.

We went to Palais Longchamp and Notre-Dame de la Garde at the top of the La Garde hill. I didn’t get the chance to enter both sites in my 2014 visit there (though I was at the gate of Longchamp), so it was nice to be able to do so this time.

Notre-Dame de La Garde

Notre-Dame de La Garde

On Sunday, we planned to go to Chateau D’If but it turned out it was closed. We were misinformed on Saturday, where we were told we could still go to the chateau on Sunday and we made our plan accordingly.

And so we had to come up with a back-up plan. We decided to go to a small beach near Vieux Port and to a small beautiful garden nearby to kill the time.

The Catalans Beach in Marseille

The Food

As usual, the food in Marseille was also really good. In fact, my brother said this was the best food he had during this European trip of his. Well, obviously I nodded along, since I love French cuisine as well!! Haha 😆

Escargot

Escargot

Once we ordered two portions of escargot. This was actually the third time ever I had it, with the first one being in Rennes and the second one in Marigot. And you know what? I can say that I LIKE escargot now!! 😱 The fact that escargot is snail does not bother me anymore, at all! Haha 😆

Back to the Netherlands

To go back to the Netherlands, we had an interesting routing. Instead of flying direct Marseille – Amsterdam, we flew Marseille – Strasbourg – Amsterdam. And to make things even more exciting, both legs would be operated with Embraer ERJ145 by HOP! Regional!!

HOP! Regional Logo
Flights: Air France flights AF5579 (MRS-SXB) and AF1436 (SXB-AMS) operated by HOP! Regional
Equipments: Embraer ERJ145 reg F-GUBE (MRS-SXB) and Embraer ERJ145 reg F-GRGJ (SXB-AMS)

However, the trip started with a mini drama with overbooking, again (see Part I). After solving this issue, there was a delay problem as well. Our first flight to Strasbourg was delayed by two hours. This was certainly a problem with our 1.5 hours of transit time in Strasbourg.

The lounge at Marseille Airport was small but the service was actually great

The lounge at Marseille Airport was small but the service was actually great

Because there were, in total, nine passengers with this issue (~20% of all passengers 😆 ), the agent in Marseille was able to convince the agent in Strasbourg to delay the Strasbourg – Amsterdam flight by 30 minutes to wait for us, haha.

Long story short, we finally boarded our flight to Strasbourg, which was with HOP! Regional’s Embraer ERJ145 reg F-GUBE. As before, I loved flying Embraer ERJ145!! It was a small plane but really smooth!! Oh, and obviously the mandatory ERJ145 selfie too:

😛

Before landing at Strasbourg, the FA mentioned that transit passengers to Amsterdam should deplane first, as the transit time was tight. After landing, we were greeted by a ground staff literally outside of the plane. He escorted all of us to the immigration check and after that we immediately boarded our connecting flight right away! Yes, it was the fastest transit experience EVER! Everything in literally less than ten minutes! Lol 😆

HOP! Regional's Embraer ERJ145 reg F-GRGJ

HOP! Regional’s Embraer ERJ145 reg F-GRGJ

The second flight to Amsterdam was operated by another ERJ145, this time F-GRGJ. I quickly took a picture of the plane, and afterwards I could see the pilot waved towards me asking me to move fast, lol 😆 . All other passengers had been waiting in the plane at that point, and they didn’t look exactly thrilled. Well, I didn’t blame them 😛 .

It was clear that the pilots were quite in a rush today. Upon departure, after the final-turn at the tip of runway 05 we immediately accelerate and take-off! Haha 😆 . As before, it was a smooth and pleasant flight towards Amsterdam. We landed at Schiphol at 20:10, just ten minutes behind our schedule. Quite impressive considering the initial delay, no?

From Schiphol, we went to Amsterdam. And here, my Post-PhD Trips officially ended.

THE END.

The bus terminal of Aix-en-Provence

The Catalans Beach in Marseille

Pantai Catalans di Marseille

Makanannya

Haha 😆

Escargot

Escargot

Sekali waktu kami memesan dua porsi escargot.

Regional!!

HOP! Regional Logo
Penerbangan: Air France AF5579 (MRS-SXB) dan AF1436 (SXB-AMS) dioperasikan oleh HOP! Regional
Pesawat: Embraer ERJ145 reg F-GUBE (MRS-SXB) dan Embraer ERJ145 reg F-GRGJ (SXB-AMS)

Namun, perjalanannya dimulai dengan drama akibat overbooking lagi (lihat Bagian I).

The lounge at Marseille Airport was small but the service was actually great

Pesawatnya kecil tetapi terbangnya mulus!! Oh, dan jelas dong foto selfie wajib ERJ145:

The mandatory ERJ145 selfie

Selfie wajib ketika terbang dengan ERJ145

😛

SELESAI.

#1880 – A Weekend Trip to … Marseille

ENGLISH

As my Instagram (@azilko) followers would have known by now, I went on, yet, another weekend trip this weekend. Yep, I know, I just had a weekend trip a week ago and this weekend I went on another one, haha 😛 .

This time, the destination was … Marseille. Yes!! Marseille, again!! Lol 😆 . I know, my weekend trip last week was also to Marseille and this weekend I was back there! Haha 😛 .

Today was a super beautiful day in Marseille as well!!

Today was a super beautiful day in Marseille as well!!

This was actually a coincidence. I planned the trip this weekend way back in August last year when I felt like planning some weekend getaway in the future as I was stressed of finishing my PhD dissertation, haha. Then, it happened that this January, my parents and brother chose Marseille as a city they would like to visit during their trip to Europe. And last weekend was the perfect fit for their schedule.

And so that was it. I went to Marseille in back to back weekends! Haha 😛 .

Actually I planned this weekend trip as my first Avgeek Weekend Trip this year, though, where the focus was on the flights; you know, as I have been to Marseille in 2014 anyway. This time, this is the routing:

The routing this weekend :P . Created with gcmap.com

Yep, Amsterdam – Paris CDG, then Paris ORY – Marseille – Bordeaux – Amsterdam, haha 😛 .

I am not sure if I will write a post about this trip, though, as I still have my Post PhD Trip series coming up as well. But we will see. But just in case the story won’t be here, here are some photos from the trip! 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

Haha 😛

Today was a super beautiful day in Marseille as well!!

Yep, Amsterdam – Paris CDG, lalu Paris ORY – Marseille – Bordeaux – Amsterdam, haha 😛 .

6. Part V: A Weekend in Marseille

Two weeks ago, I had my PhD defense and graduation which my parents and brother attended as well. When planning for the trip here, as they would already be in Europe anyway, they were thinking of organizing some trip around the continent. In the end, they chose Italy, Spain, and southern France (clearly avoiding the cold 😛 ).

Due to my now limited holiday allowances, I was not able to join them in the entirety of the trip. As I could onle spend one week of my holiday allowance, I could only join the Italy part.

Manarola

Manarola in Cinque Terre

I was excited for this because one main destination in Italy we would like to visit was the famous Cinque Terre. To get there, we flew to Genova, a city closest to Cinque Terre with an airport.

The famous David by Michaelangelo

The famous David by Michaelangelo. I was being anti-mainstream so I took a picture of its back 😛 .

We also visited Firenze (Florence) and Rome in this trip. I already went to Firenze in 2010 while I have been to Rome twice; the second time with my brother, actually. But both were beautiful cities so I was not uninterested to go back there.

From Rome, I went back to Amsterdam because it was already Sunday and I would need to go back to work on Monday.

A week later, in the weekend I went to Marseille in southern France, where my parents and brother would be. I already went to Marseille in 2014. I also found it to be beautiful so I was willing to go back there as well.

As a consequence, my flying map of this trip looks like this:

Lol.

Oh, and also, in the Paris – Genoa flight, I was upgraded to Europe business class again! 😀 Yes, again! And so in the month of January, I was upgraded and flew twice in Europe business class! Haha 😆 .

Yeah, it was quite some hopping I had to do; but it was also a lot of fun!! 🙂 As usual, here are some teasers from the trip(s):

The famous spiral stairs at Vatican Museum

Huahaha 😆

#1777 – AvGeek Weekend Trip #3 (AMS – LYS – NCE – AMS)

ENGLISH

Earlier this month, I went on my third ever AvGeek Weekend Trip where I (technically) went to Lyon and Nice on a Saturday. Both cities were not really the focuses of this trip, but rather the flights 😛 . So let the trip report begin!!

Flying Amsterdam - Lyon - Nice - Amsterdam on Saturday. Map created with gcmap.com

ATD: 08:14 CET (Runway 24 of AMS)
ATA: 09:24 CET (Runway 36L of LYS)

While the schedule departure time of this first flight was “better” than my previous AvGeek Weekend Trip, I still had to get up quite early today, haha 😆 . I took the 05:14 train to Schiphol and arrived at the airport at around 06:00. I passed the security check in no time and went to the lounge.

A KLM Cityhopper's Embraer E190 reg PH-EZD

A KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer E190 reg PH-EZD

Anyway, I went to the gate where not long after boarding started. The flight would be operated with an Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EZD which was already in KLM’s new dolphin livery. Yeay! Not long after, we departed from runway 24 and went straight to Lyon.

I always love European flights with routes involving the Alps. In the case of this Amsterdam – Lyon flight, here is a view I got:

Le Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe

Le Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe

Yes, Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe. Cool, isn’t it! 😉

The flight itself was a typical KLM flight. A sandwich service was served (Btw, I love KLM’s sandwich service nowadays!) alongside with some choices of drinks during the flight. Anyway, about 1 hour after departure, we landed at runway 36L of Lyon – Saint Exupery Airport.

Transitting at Lyon

Extra ID check at the French borders

Extra ID check at the French borders

Currently, France is in the emergency state. Consequently, even though I was flying within the Schengen area, there was an extra identity (passport and visa) check at the border. Also, an Air Transat flight from Montreal with a widebody Airbus A330-200 just landed a few minutes prior. The problem was only three booths were opened so naturally a really long line formed. Damn! Well, I had a really long transit time in Lyon anyway so it was not really a big problem actually, haha 😆 .

After clearing the immigration, I went upstairs to the departure area and passed the security check. I went to the Air France’s lounge at the airport. The lounge was really underwhelming though, where I found the seats to be rather uncomfortable and the choices of snack and drinks were rather limited. There was even no lunch service provided 😦 .

AF 7028 (Lyon – Nice)

HOP BritAir

Flight: Air France AF 7028 operated by HOP! Brit Air
Equipment: Bombardier CRJ1000 reg F-HMLI
ATD: 15:25 CET (Runway 36R of LYS)
ATA: 16:04 CET (Runway 04L of NCE)

Boarding commenced on time at one of the remote gates of Lyon – Saint Exupery Airport. I was very excited because this would be my first domestic flight in Europe this year (seventh overall) and my first flight with a Bombardier CRJ1000 since August 2014! Moreover, this would be my first ever flight with HOP! Brit Air, yeay! 😀

A HOP! Brit Air's Bombardier CRJ1000 reg G-HMLI

A HOP! Brit Air’s Bombardier CRJ1000 reg F-HMLI

Not long after boarding finished, we took off from runway 36R of Lyon – Saint Exupery Airport and made a 180° bank to the southern direction. The service on board was as per HOP! standard: light snack and drinks so it was nothing really special. It was a rather short 45 minutes flight from Lyon to Nice where the view throughout the flight was incredible with all the mountains and valleys! 😍

A mountainous view in Southern France

A mountainous view in Southern France

But it did not stop there. As I said, Nice Cote D’Azur Airport is still, in my opinion, the second most beautiful European airport which I have ever visited. As we were approaching the French Riviera, the view changed from mountainous to coastal with the tosca sea, which was amazing!!

Approaching runway 04L of Nice Cote D'Azur International Airport.

A Cote D’Azur view.

We made a few turns above the Mediterranean sea before we lined up for landing at runway 04L of Nice Cote D’Azur Airport. Here is the landing video, btw, and just look at how beautiful the color of the sea was!! 😍😍😍

Transitting in Nice

After passing the security check and immigration control, I waited at a small but packed lounge at Nice Cote D’Azur Airport. While the lounge was better than the lounge in Lyon, it was not by that much margin also, haha.

There were a lot of people travelling today, probably because it was a Saturday in the summer and a lot of people were going back home from a nice vacation in the French Riviera.

KL 1272 (Nice – Amsterdam)

KL Logo

Flight: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines KL 1272
Equipment: Boeing 737-900 reg PH-BXO (SkyTeam livery)
ATD: 20:10 CET (Runway 04R of NCE)
ATA: 21:42 CET (Runway 36R of AMS)

I was very excited when I found out that my flight today would be operated with PH-BXO. First of all, PH-BXO was a Boeing 737-900 so I loved it. Moreover, it was a special KLM’s Boeing 737-900 since it was in the SkyTeam livery!! Yeay!! So for the second consecutive time, my flight to Amsterdam would be with a KLM bird in this livery!! 😀

A KLM's Boeing 737-900 reg PH-BXO in SkyTeam livery

A KLM’s Boeing 737-900 reg PH-BXO in SkyTeam livery

Anyway, boarding did not go smoothly today where we had to wait for about 10 minutes in the airbridge before being allowed to enter the plane. So I was confused what was the point of letting us pass the boarding pass check if we were not allowed, yet, to enter the plane? 😦 .

We took off from runway 04R of Nice Cote D’Azur Airport and then flew to the northeast direction towards Amsterdam. Not long after take-off, the sandwich service was distributed again. And, again, I just loved KLM’s simple sandwich service!! 🙂

KLM's sandwich service

The rest of the flight went rather uneventful. After about 1.5 hours, we landed at my least favorite runway in Schiphol, the Polderbaan. After taxiing for about 20 minutes, the plane parked at the gate at the tip of Pier D where the walk to the terminal was really far away. I literally had to run to catch the 22:16 train back to Delft. Luckily I made it to the station on time! Haha 😆

BAHASA INDONESIA

A KLM Cityhopper's Embraer E190 reg PH-EZD

Le Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe

Brit Air
Pesawat: Bombardier CRJ1000 reg F-HMLI
ATD: 15:25 CET (Runway 36R of LYS)
ATA: 16:04 CET (Runway 04L of NCE)

Singkat cerita, pesawat lepas landas dari landasan pacu 04R Bandara Nice Cote D’Azur dan kemudian berbelok menuju ke arah timur laut menuju Amsterdam. Tak lama setelah lepas landas, layanan sandwich dibagikan. Dan, lagi, aku sukaa layanan sandwich sederhananya KLM!! 🙂

Haha 😆

Getting to/from Paris

Obviously I chose to fly to get to/from Paris, haha 😆 .

KL Logo

Flight: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines KL1233 and KL1234
Equipment: Boeing 737-800 reg PH-BXY and Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGH

Both flights were regular Amsterdam – Paris vv flight with KLM. So actually there is not much to share about here, haha 😆 . Btw, upon arriving at Paris – Charles De Gaulle Airport, appropriately, I was greeted by Rafael Nadal, hahaha 😆

Arriving in Paris and I was greeted by Rafael Nadal

Paris

I was lucky that my trip to Paris was, at least, not during the Paris flood (you see, it was something serious as there is even a dedicated Wikipedia article of it!). So the situation there was already recovering and, while still being hindered a little bit, everything was already working quite well (including the metro, which was very important to me).

Paris was, well, Paris 🙂 . What more can I say 🙂 .

In the very little time I had outside of my visit to Roland Garros, I decided to go to the super famous Arc De Triomphe in Champs Elysees. Why? Well, because I felt like it, haha 😆 . I mean, I have been to Paris several times before so I have pretty much seen quite many of Paris’ main attractions 😛 .

2016 Arc De Triomphe selfie

2016 Arc De Triomphe selfie

Champs Elysees was, as always, one of a kind. Most people you would see there dressed themselves very well; you know, probably to live up to the expectation of being in the most famous shopping street in one of the fashion capitals of the world, haha 😆 . I was lured to enter one of the shops there, which obviously was just a spontaneous impulse because I had no shopping plan with only one backpack with me for the whole weekend, lol 😆 . And you know what, I almost bought one or two t-shirts there for my upcoming but still unrevealed big trip this September 😉 . But then luckily my sanity quickly gained control and I put those t-shirts back in the display 😛 .

The Food

Obviously my focus was not on the food at all and so I did not use the app Yelp during this trip. But I did have some expectation that I should have got, at least, good food in general considering that it was Paris, haha 😆 . While it was still, overall, good, indeed; somehow I felt a little bit underwhelmed. For instance, for my first dinner in Paris, as always I had my favorite Parisian dish: confit de canard (duck confit). And it looked like this:

A very basic confit de canard dish

A very basic confit de canard dish

Something was clearly missing from the dish, wasn’t it? Yeah, it was the side salad! Okay, even though the star of a confit de canard dish is always the duck, I do feel like the dish still needs its secondary elements to be complete. The duck leg itself was cooked really well; and the french fries and ketchup made the dish substantial enough for a dinner. But I did really miss the salad.

As a result, after returning to my hotel that evening, I decided to go to the restaurant and ordered a mini Parisian salad (which wasn’t mini at all in my opinion)! Haha 😆 .

A petit Parisian salad

A petit Parisian salad

I also went to the restaurant near Stade Roland Garros in which two years ago I had an amazing escalope de veau dish. Even though I was disappointed last year with the dish, I decided to give it another try this year. It turned out that the dish was okay this year. It was not super amazing (the veal was too well-done to me), but it was not as “disappointing” as last year, haha…

Arriving in Paris and I was greeted by Rafael Nadal

A very basic confit de canard dish

Confit de canard yang amat dasar

Masakan ini jelas kekurangan sesuatu kan? Iya, kekurangan salad!

Haha 😆 .

A petit Parisian salad

Sebuah salad Paris ukuran kecil

Today, I got a Ring 1 ticket in Court Philippe Chatrier so the view from my seat was very good because the seat was quite close to the court. And so naturally today I was feeling very excited because these were the scheduled matches in Philippe Chatrier:

  1. Women’s Singles Final: [1] Serena Williams (USA) vs [4] Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP)
  2. Men’s Doubles Final: [15]Feliciano López/Marc López (ESP/ESP) vs [5] Mike Bryan/Bob Bryan (USA/USA)

And you all know that Serena Williams and Bob/Mike Bryan are amongst my favorite players! It was awesome!!

Anyway so I left my hotel at a few minutes passed 8 AM. After buying a few French pastries for breakfast, I took the metro to get to Stade Roland Garros.

Back at Roland Garros!

Back at Roland Garros!

I noticed a significant improvement has been done in this year’s edition of the tournament (compared to previous years):

  1. There are more security checks to enter Stade Roland Garros. Well, considering those infamous events which have happened multiple time in Europe within the last one year or so, this is hardly surprising and I am extremely glad they did so. This certainly made me feel much safer during my visit.
  2. Free wifi was now provided in certain areas in Stade Roland Garros!! Yeay!! 😛

As usual, the gate was opened just a few minutes before 10 AM. The weather was not the best this morning where it was very cloudy and a few drops of rain fell here and there but at least it was not raining (it was not even drizzling). I immediately went to Court Suzanne Lenglen and I bought myself a hotdog package for breakfast (the few French pastries were certainly not enough for the longer run 😛 ).

The main event at Court Philippe Chatrier would start just at 3 PM. And so to start the day I decided to watch two matches (well, one and half actually) in Court Suzanne Lenglen which started at 11 AM. They are:

1. Women’s Legends Doubles Final: Lindsay Davenport/Martina Navratilova (USA/USA) vs Conchita Martinez/Nathalie Tauziat (ESP/FRA)

It was nice to see these retired players played some tennis. Obviously they were not as fast nor athletic nor powerful as they used to be but even so, I felt like none of the four women were at their potential best during the day. In the end, Davenport/Navratilova won the match rather easily, 6–3, 6–2.

Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport won the women's legends event

Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport won the women’s legends event

2. Men’s Legends Over 45 Doubles Round Robin: Yannick Noah/Cedric Pioline (FRA/FRA) vs Mansour Bahrami/Richard Krajicek (FRA/NED)

This experience was my first time watching a men’s legends match. And here, I have to say that these men knew how to put up a very entertaining show in the form of a tennis match. The match was just a legends’ event so it was like “just” an exhibition match and there was no need to be extremely serious. And this was even more true especially when Mansour Bahrami was playing.

Mansour Bahrami

Mansour Bahrami

You see, nowadays Mansour Bahrami has the reputation as “fun” and “funky” in an exhibition match. And now I could see, with my own eyes, why. He was very funny on the court! Moreover, the other three players also played along so it became such an entertaining exhibition tennis “match” display.

For instance, at 5-all in the tiebreak of the first set, Yannick Noah hit a really good pass which neither Krajicek or Bahrami could chase. So while failingly trying to chase the ball, Bahrami threw a ball he kept in his pocket back to his opponents’ side. Obviously by this rule this was illegal and Bahrami/Krajicek lost the point. But the umpire played along with this stint and awarded the point to Bahrami/Krajicek. Obviously Noah and Pioline “protested” and so this happened:

So this happened

A protest

Haha 😆 .

Yeah, it was very funny!!

***

I decided to leave Court Suzanne Lenglen after the first set because I was hungry for lunch. So I went to the gourmet restaurant and ordered my favorite dish at Roland Garros: steak with Mediterranean ratatouille.

After lunch, I went to Court Philippe Chatrier and settled in my seat. I was quite early there and at that time, Novak Djokovic was still practicing for his tomorrow’s men’s singles final against Andy Murray. A few minutes later, he left the court.

At Court Philippe Chatrier

At Court Philippe Chatrier. I carefully chose this outfit of mine. Can you guess why so?

The main event today started with a ceremony of the induction of Amelie Mauresmo to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. After that, the main showdown of today, the women’s singles final, started.

3. Women’s Singles Final: [1] Serena Williams (USA) vs [4] Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP)

This women’s singles final was a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final, which I also watched live 😛 . Anyway, I was very excited when Serena Williams entered the court:

And I noticed that my hand was shaking when I was taking that short video. I don’t know if it was because I was being nervous or just due to my excitement, haha 😆 .

You all know that Serena Williams is one of my most favorite tennis players, ever. But you might not know that actually I also like Garbiñe Muguruza. Moreover, I do think that she can be on the top of the women’s game some day (sidelining very bad injury of course), and that some day might actually come quite soon. However, in the battle between these two, obviously I would have to go with which of the two which I liked the more; and in this case it was Serena, haha 😆 .

Serena William serving

Serena Williams. Yes so I chose my outfit so that the color would match Serena’s dress #truefans

But as you might already know by now, Muguruza won 7–5, 6–4. Serena did not play at her best (her first serve percentage was quite low which allowed Muguruza too much look on her second serve) but it was obvious that she was fighting hard, including saving four championships points in the second set. However, it was not enough as Muguruza was in the zone today. Muguruza’s strategy today was clear to me: to go for her shots, playing high risk tennis. This was reasonable because if she did not do so, she would most definitely lose the match given her opposition in the final. And her strategy paid off where she basically “painted the lines” in many occassions during the match.

The reward for Muguruza? Well, her first grandslam singles title!!

Garbiñe Muguruza won her first grandslam title at Roland Garros 2016

Garbiñe Muguruza won her first grandslam title at Roland Garros 2016

Congratulations, Garbiñe!!

As for Serena, I do hope she wakes up just in time for Wimbledon and the upcoming US Open this year. Come on Serena, you can do it!!

4. Men’s Doubles Final: [15] Feliciano López/Marc López (ESP/ESP) vs [5] Mike Bryan/Bob Bryan (USA/USA)

Following the women’s singles final was the men’s doubles final between Feliciano López/Marc López and Mike Bryan/Bob Bryan.

The López got an early break in the first set which they managed to hold upon until the end of the set, thus winning it 6–4. The second set was much tighter that a tiebrak was forced to be played. The Bryans saved one championships point during the tiebreak and took claimed the set by winning the tiebreak (8–6).

Feliciano López and Marc López

Feliciano López and Marc López

After the second set, somehow I felt very tired. I think I was more affected by the disappointment of Serena’s loss than I thought I was, haha 😆 . And so I decided to leave the stadium. Well, I still had one day the next day so my justification was that I needed to have a good rest 😛 .

Anyway, it turned out that Feliciano López/Marc López won the third set 6–3 thus the Spaniards won their first grandslam title.

Back at Roland Garros!

Horee!! *penting ini* 😛

Seperti biasa, gerbang masuk dibuka beberapa menit sebelum jam 10 pagi.

Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport won the women's legends event

Martina Navratilova dan Lindsay Davenport memenangi gelar ganda legenda putri

2. Babak Round Robin Legenda Putra Di Atas 45 Tahun: Yannick Noah/Cedric Pioline (FRA/FRA) vs Mansour Bahrami/Richard Krajicek (FRA/NED)

So this happened

Sebuah protes

Haha 😆 .

Iyaa, lucu banget memang!!

***

Beberapa menit setelah aku datang, ia meninggalkan lapangannya.

At Court Philippe Chatrier

Yah, gelar grandslam pertamanya!!

Garbiñe Muguruza won her first grandslam title at Roland Garros 2016

Feliciano López and Marc López

Feliciano López dan Marc López

Setelah set kedua, entah mengapa aku merasa amat lelah.

As my Instagram followers (@azilko) would have known by now, this weekend was the weekend of my annual trip to Paris to watch the 2016 French Open (Roland Garros). Yes, I went to Paris this weekend!

Paris, as usual, was amazing (but still busy and full of tourists here and there, lol 😆 ). The food, per usual, was generally great as well. Of course, as the capital of France, whose food is one of my most favorite cuisine in the world, this was basically a given, haha 😆 . Even though this time I did not have the bestest culinary experience in Paris in general though but this was because food was not in the top of my agenda of course 😛 .

The French Open was super fun per usual. Being a grandslam tournament, it was much “more” than any other “regular” tennis tournaments. The players and the fans care about this tournament more, thus making the atmosphere electric. To be honest, before going on this trip, I was a little bit worried about the tournament scheduling though after the heavy rain which hit Paris early in the second week of the tournament which messed up the whole schedule. But luckily they were able to catch up in the end, even though not without some controversies from the players’ point of view.

From the results point of view, to be honest I had mixed feeling. While I was certainly happy my favorite players made it to the final so I could watch them play those finals live in person, literally all of them lost the matches so I could not leave Stade Roland Garros with the most joyous feeling ever 😦 . But this is the reality of sport. You win some, you lose some. This is what makes it exciting and the competitive nature is what stimulates the players to keep improving and fighting. But as a fans I am hoping they will all do better in the next big tournament, Wimbledon, haha 😆 .

Nevertheless, I am still very very very lucky. Last year, I witnessed the realization of Serena Slam 2.0 when Serena Williams won Wimbledon 2015 (by doing so, she was holding the titles of all four grandslams simultaenously). This weekend, I witnessed the realization of Nole Slam in Paris. Novak Djokovic won Roland Garros 2016 which means that now he holds the titles of the four grandslams! This feat is much rarer in the men’s field where the last time this happened was in 1969 when Rod Laver won all four grandslam tournaments that year.

So all in all, it was such a fun trip and I am glad I was able to make it!! As per usual, here are some teasers from this trip! 😉

French Open-nya sendiri seru seperti biasanya.

Toh walaupun begitu, aku sebenarnya masih sangat sangat sangat beruntung loh.
