#1494 – 2014 in Review

ENGLISH

Here we go again, already at the end of the year 2014. And just like in 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2013, here is an overview of the year of 2014 for me…

***

January 2014

I started the year in the city of Manchester in England for my year end 2013 trip to West England. I went to the Old Trafford Stadium on the New Year’s day but could not get in because there was a scheduled football match between Manchester United (MU) and Tottenham later on that evening. The following day, I went for a one day trip to the city of Liverpool to the west of Manchester. It was such a nice short trip, even though the weather in England was not better than the Dutch weather, haha 😆 . But a short getaway was always welcomed.

There was nothing special for the rest of the month as I was just busy with my work…

February 2014

There were three highlights from this month which worthed mentioning here (I won’t bore you (and myself) with sentences about how busy I was at work, since this has been the theme at work throughout the entire year this year 😆 ).

Hello, London!!
Hello, London!!
London Gatwick Airport

Firstly, I decided to get myself a new personal laptop since my old one was dying and its problem was getting worse. Secondly, I impulsively decided to watch a session of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam because Andy Murray decided to take a late wild card entry there, haha 😆 . And thirdly, I went for a weekend trip to London at the end of February to try the ferry service from Hoek van Holland in the Netherlands to Harwich in England and because I got a free one way easyJet ticket from London Gatwick to Amsterdam, thanks to my Emirates’ miles 😀 .

March 2014

Unfortunately, nothing that special occurred in March. Let’s just say my life continued through the month 😆 .

April 2014

However, April was awesome. In the second week of the month I had to go to Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean sea, to present my work. I extended the trip for a weekend in Marseille, the second largest city in France (obviously after Paris) in the southern coast of France.

A week later, during the Easter long weekend, I decided to go to Copenhagen. I also went for a one day trip to Helsingborg (so I can say that technically I have been to Sweden too 😛 ) where I met Bebe, a fellow blogger, there 🙂 .

May 2014

Just like the month of March, there was not so much worth mentioning here. My life, again, continued through the month 😛 .

June 2014

At the end of May, however, I went to Paris to watch the second grandslam tournament of the year, the French Open, for a long weekend trip. A trip to a grandslam tournament is always nice, but this time it was just nice to me because I didn’t get to watch any of my most favorite players. Even though, of course, I still saw some big names of the game performing, like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, and Petra Kvitova, to name a few.

This summer was also a month of tennis for me; as I also competed in my first ever tennis tournament here in the Netherlands, haha 😆 .

July 2014

There was not much to tell from the first 3/4 of the month. Aside from working, I was also a little bit busy preparing my homecoming trip by the end of this month. And yes, I went to Indonesia for a one month summer trip at the end of this month. I was flying with Garuda Indonesia’s newest route at that time, a non-stop Amsterdam – Jakarta flight which took 14 hours;. This was the longest non-stop flight I had ever taken thus far btw.

And of course I had my first hand experience of the World Cup hype in a country which had a competing football team in the World Cup, and they were actually good at it. It was really cool! 🙂 A friend of mine from Indonesia was also in Europe at that time and spent a weekend at my place.

Oh, and I also had to buy a new smartphone because my previous one suddenly decided to break one morning.

August 2014

The theme of the month was my one month Indonesia trip. I basically spent two and a half weeks in Yogyakarta and ten days going around some places in Indonesia. So I went to South Sulawesi (Makassar and Toraja), Lombok, and Bali. It was the first time ever I stepped my feet on the Sulawesi and Lombok soil.

It was such a fun experience and month!

September – October 2014

I can put these two months together because there was not much worth telling here, just like March and May, haha. Aside from work, I was just busy preparing my year end trip to India.

November 2014

The highlight of the month was definitely my weekend trip to the French capital of gastronomy, Lyon, which was also the third largest city in France. Btw, this meant that this year I went to the three biggest cities in France? Haha 😆 . The highlight of this highlight was that I had lunch at a one Michelin star restaurant for the first time ever 😛 .

December 2014

The last month of the year. And obviously, a big year end trip this month to India. And by the time this post is published, actually I am currently still there (I prepared this post before I left). 😀

***

Yeah, that was the year 2014 for me. Let 2015 be an even better and brighter year!! 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

Nah, tiba-tiba disinilah kita berada lagi, di penghujung tahun 2014. Dan seperti di tahun 2008, 2011, 2012, dan 2013, berikut ini rangkuman dari hidupku di tahun 2014 ini…

***

Januari 2014

April 2014

Namun, bulan Aprilku seru banget deh.

Garuda Indonesia configured their Boeing 777-300ER with a 3-3-3 seating in economy

#1329 – 2013 in Review

ENGLISH

Here we are again, already standing in the end of 2013. Time really flies as suddenly another year has passed! Well, so now I am taking a moment to look back at how my life has been in this year of 2013; just like in 2011 and 2012. And here is the year of 2013 in review…

January 2013

I started the year with flying from Rome to Madrid (Trust me, I have been wanting to write this exact sentence for this exact post since the first day of 2013! 😎 😛 ) as I was still in the middle of my 2012 year-end trip to Paris, Rome, Madrid, and Barcelona with my brother who was having a one month vacation in Europe at that time. It was such a nice vacation, and the first time ever I visited Spain. Barcelona was impressive, moreso with their very warm winter! I went back to the Netherlands mid-January; and it was actually snowing here at that time! So imagine the contrast that I felt! 😆

My brother went back to Indonesia mid-January, and my life went back to the normal busy PhD life with a few courses or seminars here and there; with an exam that I had to do in the end of January.

February 2013

Just like the year before, I was staying in Delft only for the entire February. But like in 2012, it was quite an important month for my summer plan. This month, I decided to buy the weekend pass for Roland Garros (the French Open) tournament this year mid-February; and also my paper was accepted to be presented in a conference in June. I also tried to be a vegetarian for one week this month. And this experiment made me realize how difficult it was to be a vegetarian!! 😯

March 2013

March was another okay month for me; as not much, aside from working, was happening in my life. The weather was still quite cool but it was not freezing anymore.

April 2013

The Boy band performing

The first half of April was basically like my March; my life was revolving around work. Well, now it makes me realize that I probably should make a plan or something in March/early April to make my life more interesting! Hahaha 😆 . In the end of April, I went to Den Haag to celebrate the Koninginnenacht (The Queen’s Night) in Den Haag. It was the first time ever I celebrated the Koninginnenacht in the Netherlands (I had been to the Koninginnedag in Amsterdam in 2011). Speaking of which, it would be the last Konginnenacht (or Koninginnedag) since Queen Beatrix decided to retire this year, and her successor was King Willem -Alexander. So starting in 2014, this holiday will not be known as the Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day) anymore, but the Koningsdag (King’s Day).

May 2013

May was a busier month for me because I started my apartment-hunting this month. My contract with my then apartment would end in the end of July and I would not be able to extend my contract. In the end, I am really glad that my roommate and I found this nice apartment (the decision was finalized in June though). May was also the month of long weekends, as three of the four consecutive weekends I had was a long weekend! 😯 I decided to buy a new bicycle in May too; and there was a small reunion party with my Masters friends in Delft in mid-May.

May ended with a blast for me, as I went to Paris to watch the French Open for the second time in a row. This time, I went on the middle weekend so I got the fourth round matches of the tournaments. And I got the Philippe Chatrier seat, the main court of the tournament. In the two days of my visit to the tournament, I gotta watch the matches of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and Maria Sharapova! 😯

June 2013

Just like in 2012, June was a month full of travelling, huahaha 😎 . I started and ended June not in the Netherlands, and both of them were even in different countries. Mid-June, I went to London for a conference for almost one week. It was my first conference trip during my PhD years; so it was quite exciting. And a little bit intimidating as well as I was travelling there alone, not with my supervisors. But I am really glad it went really well.

I ended June by taking a one week off from work and I went back to: London. Well, I guess the reason was super obvious, right? 😉 Yes, I went there for the Wimbledon Championships. I went there in the first week of the tournament. I visited it three times, and I had to queue in those three times, which was very physically demanding! I did not get any of the Centre Court matches, but I still watched some big names like Serena Williams, Juan Martin del Potro, Tomas Berdych, and Richard Gasquet’s matches.

July 2013

The main headline of my life in July was moving. My contract with my then apartment would end in the end of July while my contract with my new apartment started in early of July. This was a perfect setting as I had one month to move so I did not have to bring everything in one go. Even so, I felt that one month passed by so fast! And I went back and forth between my old and new apartments almost everyday! 😆 In the end of July, obviously I had to arrange the other stuffs as well, like the TV and internet connection for example.

August 2013

Het gele boek for my Intermediate Dutch course
Het gele boek for my Intermediate Dutch course

While I was so occupied in July, I realized that I should have planned something for August. Everyone was on their summer vacation in August and I was there working in my office, basically alone. But August was also quite important because I set myself to be super busy in the upcoming two months on this month. I enrolled myself in a Dutch course for the upcoming period and I was assigned as the student-assistant of a course in the upcoming semester as well.

September 2013

With the new semester started, suddenly my working life became extremely busy with versatile things to get done. I had to do my main research (obviously), teaching-related stuffs, and also the Dutch course. Juggling all these three things, and also other things in my personal life as well, obviously, were a lot! In the end of September, I had my big Go/No Go meeting and thankfully the meeting ended up with a “Go”, which meant my PhD research was going fine.

October 2013

October went pretty much similarly with September, except that a paper deadline was approaching so it was even more crazy! Hahaha 😆 . What motivated me the most was that a big trip that I would embark on at the end of the month. And in the end I am fascinated at how I was able to go through it all and finished everything on time. Btw, the trip was obviously the one month Asia trip where after three years and two months, finally I was going back to Indonesia for a vacation 🙂 . And finally, for the first time ever in my life, I was flying with an Airbus A380!! 😀

An Emirates’ Airbus A380-800 reg code A6-EEI, a four month old A380!

November 2013

The main theme of November was obviously my one month Asia trip. I started November in my hometown, Yogyakarta. Then, I went to Bandung for two days, followed by visiting the islands of Belitung and Bangka with my parents and brother. After that, we continued our trip for a one week trip in South Korea with three nights of transit in Kuala Lumpur. I had about five more days in Yogyakarta before I was going back to the Netherlands.

It was such a fun trip, and was so due after such a long time!! But maybe I planned a little bit too much in the trip though, as I was so physically tired after that! Hahaha 😆 . Well, it was super fun, obviously, but taking sixteen flights in the period of four weeks covering 39,800 km (flights only) was obviously taking its toll on the body 😀 .

December 2013

I was busy working in December, as I felt that I needed to kick myself and work harder to get faster progress on the project. And the month of December had its own unique aura where people knew the end of the year was coming so everyone was kinda in holiday mood.

To end the year, I did not want to just stay in Delft. So I decided to arrange a trip, and while my UK visa was still valid, I decided to plan a trip to the UK again. But obviously I preferred a place that I had never visited before. And so I decided to go to West England and I will end the year there.

BAHASA INDONESIA

April 2013

During Kensington's Performance
Konsernya Kensington

Serena Williams won her fourth round match

Novak Djokovic memukul pukulan forehand.

Agustus 2013

Oktober 2013

Oktober kurang lebih berjalan mirip seperti September, hanya saja ada satu tenggat waktu yang datang sehingga rasanya jadi stress banget deh! Hahaha 😆 . 😀

See the size of this aircraft!
Lihat deh ukuran si Airbus A380 ini!

November 2013

#1167 – 2012 in Review

ENGLISH

Just like last year, here is my year of 2012 in review. Btw, at first, I was thinking of not writing it chronologically; but in the end, I decided to still do so as I thought the story flew more and it was more comfortable this way, hahaha 😆 . Anyway, so here we go:

***

January 2012

I didn’t do anything special on January as far as I recall. I was just focusing on my thesis research and an exam that I decided to take to achieve a target I had set for myself. Well, I did not reveal what target it was back then. But now that my Master study is officially over, I could reveal that it was to graduate with cum laude accolade, huahaha 😎 😆 . And as I said this time, in the end I succeeded to acquire the accolade 🙂 .

February 2012

February started with freezing weather that struck the Netherlands. It pretty much ended the warm winter (in winter standard 😛 ) last year; much to my happiness since it meant that the new winter coat that I bought (after a very good sale) just a couple of weeks prior became very useful! 😛 .

I also executed the necessary step this month to realize one dream of mine of watching Wimbledon Championships in Wimbledon, London: applying for a UK visa. I submitted my application in early February and I went to Düsseldorf, Germany in late February to finalize the process.

March 2012

Again, there was nothing particulary interesting that I did this month. My life was revolving around my thesis project the whole month. In the end, I finally got a much clearer vision of how my thesis should look like; which helped me to prepare and strategize better to finish everything on time. Ah, and in early March, my UK visa application was successful and I got my six-month visa to visit the United Kingdom! 🙂

April 2012

The beginning of April was pretty much the same story as March. I was focusing on my research and also taking two exams to secure the cum laude target I mentioned earlier to be within reach.  In the end of April, I had a weekend (plus Monday and Tuesday 😛 ) trip to Scotland. After getting my visa in March, I decided to go on another trip to the UK. I already heard some nice words about Scotland and KLM offerred attractive price to go to Glasgow and Edinburgh at that time. So off to Scotland I went.

Scotland was amazing. Somehow, I have very strong impression of this trip, as apparently I like it so much! The highlight would be that I also went to Loch Ness during this trip.

May 2012

I worked my ass off in May as I set a target to myself to already finish the core part of my thesis research at the latest by the third week of May. I nailed this target, and even I basically achieved it by the second week of May. Not bad, eh? 🙂

In the last week of May, I had, probably, the most exciting trip I had ever had up to this point: I went to Paris to watch the second grandslam tournament of the year: the French Open!  I took bus to get to Paris though, and I realized that I prefered the Thalys train, hahaha 😛 . It was an amazing trip (except that Serena Williams lost in the first round 😦 ) as I was able to taste a little bit of the atmosphere of a grandslam tournament, which was incredible! I told myself I would definitely go to other grandslam tournaments as well, again and again! 🙂

June 2012

June was probably the most life-defining month for me. It was the month of the year! 😛

First of all, in the beginning of June, I got a very wonderful offer from my supervisors about a PhD position at TU Delft. I read the proposal and I found the project very interesting. Most importantly, I kinda felt that this project was meant for me! That is why in the end I decided to take the offer 🙂

Next, I went to my first ever conference trip in mid-June. The trip was to Bergen, Norway; and it was an amazing and mind-blowing trip (and it was basically free for me, hahaha 😆 ). I learned a lot from the trip and met so many geniuses! In a way, it made me realize how “big” the “world” was. Anyway, I decided to extend my stay for two days there. The highlight would be the one-day tour to the fjord near Bergen. It was super amazing.

Literally two days after coming back from Norway, I departed on another trip to London. Yes, this was the big trip I had been planning for a long time: going to London to watch Wimbledon! I stayed for one week in London, spending three days at the Championships. It was another unforgettable memory, as I found Wimbledon to be extremely cool and awesome!! I was able to watch Serena Williams’ first round match and Maria Sharapova’s second round match; as well as many other matches involving the big names.

July 2012

July was the month where I finalized all things related to my Master’s thesis and the thesis defense. I finalized the thesis report and did all the graduation paperworks. I also took care of all the things related to the preparation of my PhD position that would start in September. At the end of the month, the contract of my old apartment also ended and so I had to move to a new place as of August.

August 2012

I moved to my new apartment on August 1st. Then, I had my thesis defense in August 15th. I passed the defense (obviously) and received my Master’s diploma, and thus, my Master’s degree as well. The whole month was pretty much the thesis defense season where I received many invitations of my friends’ thesis defenses.

September 2012

My PhD position started this month. It was where all the works began. We set some plans about my research and also, importantly, the short-term plans for me (like taking some courses, seminars, workshops, etc). Other things that needed to be taken care of regarding my position were also finalized this month. Yeah, as of this month, I officially became a PhD Candidate 🙂 .

October 2012

The highlight this month would be when my parents went to Europe to visit me. In mid-October, we met in Amsterdam, finally we met face to face after two years and two months. Later on that week, we had a two-week trip to southern France and Austria. It was another amazing and unforgettable trip. We became refugees in Lourdes, Nice and Monaco which were so awesome, and my second visit to Austria.

November 2012

The reason my parents chose this time to visit me was a graduation ceremony scheduled to be held in early November. So, on November 2nd, I had my “second” graduation ceremony at TU Delft 🙂 . My parents went back to Indonesia two days later. Then, the rest of the month was pretty much back to work for me.

December 2012

The snow started to struck the Netherlands in December. Then, I went to Antwerp to watch Kim Clijsters’ last tennis match at Kim’s Thank You Games exhibition in mid-December. She was playing Venus Williams. Later on this month, my brother visited me during the Christmas break. While he was here, we decided to travel around Europe a little bit and we were going to Paris, Rome, Madrid, and Barcelona…

***

To put in perspective, yeah, 2012 has been a wonderful year for me. It also has been a very important year where my life is, pretty much, defined. I made a big decision to do a PhD this year, a decision that I suppose is a very pivotal one in my life. It gives specific direction into my future. Yeah, I have to be grateful for this wonderful 2012. And also, may 2013 be an even greater year for me 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

Skotlandia keren banget loh.

#1011 – 2011 in Review!

ENGLISH

So here we are, already in the end of the year 2011.  One more year has (almost) passed and come to an end; and I would like to use this opportunity to write a short recap of this year of my life to close this year. Well, pretty much similar to what I did back in 2008 though I only did that in bahasa Indonesia back then 😛 Anyway, so here we go:

***

January 2011

Grand Canal in Venezia

I started the year with a New Year’s Eve celebration in St. Marc’s Square in Venice, Italy with some friends. That celebration was quite an unforgettable moment for me, as it was crazy!! I mean, it was actually okay, but just until the countdown. After that, it was quite a mess, hahaha 😆 . A few days later, we went back to the Netherlands; and everything went back serious again. I had to finish a project for Scientific Computing course and, without question, started studying for my first three written examinations in TU Delft. I had all those three exams in the end of January and I passed all of them , hahaha.

February 2011

ABN Amro WTT's Men's Doubles Final between Melzer/Petzchner vs Llodra/Zimonjic

I watched my first ever professional tennis tournament in this month. I watched the final of ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament, an annual tennis tournament held in Rotterdam. It was quite a big tournament, categorized as ATP World Tour 500 in the ATP Tour. Even though none of the finalists was my favorite, both Robin Söderling and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were two of top players on the ATP Tour and both of them had been ranked within the top 10 and reached the final of a grandslam. And it was a nice final that went to three sets which Söderling eventually won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Vianden Castle in Luxembourg

About ten days later, we had a spring break in TU Delft. My friends and I went to explore Luxembourg during this time. Luxembourg was such a nice super small country. We stayed for two nights and I think we had pretty much explored the whole country, hahaha 😆 . And also, it was so uncrowded. At around 8 PM in the capital city of the country, Luxembourg City, it was felt like it was already 1 or 2 AM, hahaha.

March 2011

Nothing extraordinary happened this month. I attended a friend’s birthday celebration in the centrum; and we had another international students gathering where we did potluck. Also, this month, spring started to take over the season.

April 2011

I think I started exercising on a more regular basis in this month. Something that is good and has been (sort of) part of my daily life right now. Thanks God for that 🙂 In the middle of April, a group of friends and I went to the worldwide famous Keukenhof in the Netherlands. We went there during the day where there was also a flower parade, a poor decision as this day was the most busiest day in Keukenhof. So many visitors were there that we saw people everywhere across the garden and we could not really see the parade anyway as the view was blocked by, not surprisingly, people, hahaha. But still, Keukenhof was a beautiful garden anyway!

Flower Field next to Keukenhof
The world famous Keukenhof Garden

A few days later, I also officially closed my old blog and moved to this WordPress blog. In the end of this month, I went to Den Haag and Amsterdam to see the celebration of Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day) in the Netherlands. Everyone was wearing orange, and so was I, hahaha 🙂

People during Koninginnedag

May 2011

Just like March, nothing in particular special happened in May. I used all of my time studying for the courses that I took in the second semester. I had an oral examination and several (three if I am not mistaken) projects to be done in May. In the end of May, I would have to go to a written exam that I was kinda afraid of. To prepare myself for that exam, I pretty much locked myself in the library and my office just studying the materials for that exam since ten days before the exam! Well, not the whole ten days as I had to take one or two days away from that course to work on one of the aforementioned projects, but I guess you know what I mean, hehe 🙂 In the end I also passed this exam , and I was so happy about that !

Oh, and also, at the end of this month, my old bike was broken down and I decided to look for a new bike.

June 2011

Mid-June, I went to Rosmalen, near ‘s-Hertogenbosch, to watch my second professional tennis tournament. This time, it was a combined event in the ATP and WTA Tour: Unicef Open, a warming-up tournament for Wimbledon. I was really excited because one of the finalists in the women’s singles was one of my favorite player: Jelena Dokić. Even though unseeded, she was the favorite to win the title against eight-seeded Roberta Vinci who was her opponent in the final. It turned out to be a very close-fought match with Dokić eventually lost 7-6(7), 3-6, 5-7. I still think the short (probably 10 – 15 minutes) rain delay during the second set was the turning point for Vinci: Dokić lost some of her momentum there.

Jelena Dokić firing a backhand shot

About a week after that, there was a picnic slash farewell celebration for one professor in my group in TU Delft who retired this year. It was held in the Delftse Hout, and it was fun! Then, I planned my activities in the summer this month. Planning trips was (and is) such a wonderful and fun thing to do, hehehe 🙂 . Also, I got an offer for the internship (that I am currently working on) this month. I was quite lucky 🙂

July 2011

I started the month by going to Giethoorn in the province of Overijssel, the Netherlands with some friends. They invited me to join them and I said why not. Well, before the invitation, I had never heard of Giethoorn, hahaha 😆 😳 ; but they said it was very famous and nice. I trusted them of course. And yes, Giethoorn was such a nice little village! If you go to the Netherlands in group (at least 3 or 4 people), you should go to Giethoorn and don’t forget to rent a boat once there and sail along the canal and lake, hehe 🙂

Giethoorn's Main Canal

Earlier this month, I also got the part-time job that I am currently doing. I felt so blessed!

Mid July, my friends and I went on travelling to two countries: Germany and Switzerland. Our route was: Delft – Amsterdam – Cologne – Koblenz – Bingen/Rüdesheim – Stuttgart – Konstanz and Bodensee – Zürich – Basel – Amsterdam – Delft. It was such a nice trip and I was happy that I was so on budget in Germany: I spent much less than anticipated. Always a good news. Plus, we found out in Germany that the price of a car was not that expensive! hahaha 😆 This surely boosted our confidence. However, once we were in Switzerland, things turned around. It was so freaking expensive there! For a meal, it would cost at least 20 euro there! . And it was just a normal meal, not a big one nor super tasty one, hahaha. Anyway, but I really liked Zürich though. I found it very beautiful; and a combination of “beach” and “mountain”, kinda like the best of both worlds for me.

Rüdesheim
Zürich and River Limmat

August 2011

I worked on a project early August. After that, in mid August, I went on my second summer trip to Austria and Slovakia. The route was: Delft – Amsterdam – Innsbruck – Salzburg – Vienna (and Bratislava) – Rotterdam – Delft. I was very excited going on this trip because I would visit Salzburg: the place where Sound of Music was filmed back in the 1960s! It was, again, a very nice trip. I found Austria as a very beautiful and scenic country. Innsbruck was much more beautiful than I expected, and so was Vienna. It was just that because I was travelling during the summer, it was so hot there!! Well, at least it was not humid though, but it was hot!!

Schloss Mirabel!
Schloss Schönbrunn

September 2011

Summer break ended, new semester started, and I had my birthday, huahahaha 😆 🙂 Two of my friends, whose birthdays were close to mine, and I decided to throw a little celebration in one of my friends’ apartment. Later on that month, my childhood friend, Ken, came backpacking to Europe. It was quite “weird”, you know, meeting someone you knew from the past, whom you used to meet somewhere, in another part of the world. 😀

Eiffel tower and the Seine river
The famous Moulin Rouge

A week later, we went on a short trip to the capital city of France, Paris, for four days. Paris was Paris. It was a nice city. Well, some said Paris was overrated but probably it was because they already had expectations about Paris in their mind before coming there. I, probably, didn’t as I found Paris a very nice and beautiful city! To get there, I also took the high-speed train, Thalys, from Holland. It was the first time I was riding a high-speed train; and travelling at 300+ km/hour on a train was really awesome!! 🙂

October 2011

Again, nothing special happened this month. I used most of my time working on some projects and worked part-time as a student assistant. I had a small heating problem with my laptop and I bought a cooling pad to help it cooling down. I also had had a plan to join tennis lesson in the sport center and so I decided to buy a tennis racket.

November 2011

Just like October, nothing so extraordinary happened this month. I was still busy with projects from campus; and my second level Dutch course also started in early November. Adding the student-assistant-ing schedule to the list, I officially became extremely busy this month. At one point, I was worrying whether I was biting more than I could chew; but I ain’t a quitter and just worked really hard and tried to manage my time really well to get through all of it.  In the end, I think I nailed them down and I am so proud of myself  .

One other highlight of this month was that I finally started my first ever tennis lesson. I was really excited!! 🙂

At dusk in a winter day

December 2011

My life was still busy and packed with all projects from campus; and that second level Dutch course; and that student assistant thing until mid December. Christmas and New Year holiday season started, but because I was planning not to go anywhere this time, I was just staying at home in Delft. Delft has been kinda “deserted” this past week after holiday season started in TU Delft.

***

That was it, my life in 2011 in a single entry. Overall, 2011 has been a good year for me. Perhaps “duller” than my super colorful 2010 which was packed with pleasant surprises and news; and trips here and there, but I am still grateful for 2011. 2011 is also the first year in my life which I wholly spent outside of Indonesia. If I could turn back in time and change something in 2011, hmm, I don’t know, but probably I would make the last three months of 2011 “less dull” than they appear above. But anyway, I am still grateful for 2011 and I cannot wait 2012 to start!! 🙂

BAHASA INDONESIA

***

Januari 2011

Gondola and Grand Canal

Februari 2011

Robin Soderling came victorious in Rotterdam in 2011

Maret 2011

Flowers in Keukenhof
So many people that day!

People during Koninginnedag

Mei 2011

Busy Saturday in Giethoorn

Konstanz Harbor, the statue was rotating btw!
Zürich from Lindenhof

Agustus 2011

Tapi setidaknya nggak lembab sih, tapi masih aja panas gitu ya!!

The Alps
Operahaus

September 2011

The queue of people wanting to enter Louvre
Eiffel Tower during the day

Seminggu kemudian, kami jalan-jalan singkat ke ibukotanya Prancis, Paris, selama empat hari. Paris ya Paris lah ya. Kotanya indah banget.

Clay courts inside the balloon in TU Delft 🙂

#1003 – First Encounter With Snow

ENGLISH

As I promised before, now I would like to share a bit of my first encounter with snow.

Late November 2010

That time, I was sitting in front of my computer in my office in campus. Just like usual, I idly checked the weather forecast. And this time, the weather forecast for the next day would be: SNOWING!!!  I immediately reacted by yelling: “yes!!” Finally, for the first time in my life, I would encounter a snowing day firsthand!!! It was really exciting. At that time, after I reacted too much like that, my officemates turned their heads on me and gave me this curious look. They asked me why did I suddenly yell “yes” like that and I explained to them about the snow. Hearing my answer, instead of understanding the answer I told them, they seemed to become even more confused and said: “and so?” Well, then of course I told them that it would be my very first encounter with snow as there was no snow in Indonesia except in Puncak Jaya.

What I observe is, the ones who seem to be excited with snow are ones who have never, or seldom, had encounters with snow (just like me 😳 ). While they who are used to snow, instead of being happy, would feel unhappy when the weather forecast predicts that snow will fall. Come to think about it, they are quite right. There are a lot more things to do (and precaution about) when snow is falling. Aside from having to wear more and thicker clothes, snow can also cause more problems. One of many is the very slippery road. Well, isn’t also slippery when it rains? Well, no! In an ordinary rainy day, the water would go into the drain or sewer and so the road becomes wet, but not slippery. When it snows, after some time, the snow would melt (because it becomes “warm” as the snow is piling). However, because the temperature is cold (which causes snow to be formed in the first place anyway), that formed water freezes back. Now, here comes the problem. Instead of freezing back to snow, this water forms a layer of ice (called black ice)! And this black ice is the cause of the slippery road!

Anyway, so, there came the next day. After studying all day long in my campus, I went back home at around 7 PM or so. At that time, it had been snowing for quite some time and so the scene around was already whitey. Cool!!  Of course I took some pictures, huahahaha 😆 . It was quite a joyous moment to finally touch the real snow with these hands! 😀 Finally!!! Also, at that time, there was an invitation to play snowball fight, but I could not join them. I forgot why. Ah, I think it would have also been superb had I joined that snowball fight!!

Several days later, I got a news that one of my friends, Diana, got an accident. She fell from her bike because her bike skidded because of the slippery road because of the snow. Her ankle broke and she had to have total rest in her apartment. Hence, some friends and I decided to visit her and brought her some cooking. Well, it was also snowing during that visiting day. And the snow was falling from the sky just like rain. It was so awesome that on the way to Diana’s place, in one crossing, I stopped for a while to video that, huahahaha 😆 You can see the video below. Ah, and also, I was walking to get to Diana’s place. Well, at that time, I was going to her place with a friend of mine. Well, learning from what happened to Diana, my friend was a bit reluctant to bike there and so he proposed to walk instead. So, we walked…

There was also a funny story that day. After I visited Diana, my friend and I went back home. To get back home, because we were not in the mood to walk all the way back, we planned to catch a bus. Well, the bus stop was in the main road and it was quite far from the apartment’s entrance. At that time, I saw a short cut nearby which looked like an empty yard with piles of snow on it. So, my friend and I decided to take this short cut and walked there to get to the bus stop, until we realized something … .  .Why on earth were there ducks SWIMMING on the “yard”! Our mind suddenly realized that that “yard” was not “yard”, but it was A POND WITH FROZEN SURFACE instead and we were standing on top of that!!  We immediately ran back to the side for our lives of the pond before the ice surface broke!! Lucky at that time the ice layer was thick and strong enough to sustain our weights!! Had it been thinner and I innocently walked on top of it … .

A snowy day in TU Delft in 2010. The snow was falling from the sky at this time.
The "yard". I had a point there, see?? It did look like a normal yard!! 😯

BAHASA INDONESIA

Seperti yang aku janjikan sebelumnya, sekarang aku ingin menceritakan sedikit mengenai pengalaman pertamaku dengan salju.

Akhir November 2010

Salah satunya, jalanan menjadi licin gitu kalau bersalju. Lah, memang kalau hujan enggak apa? Wah, beda! Kalau hujan biasa, airnya bakal masuk got dan saluran air sehingga jalanan hanya menjadi basah tapi nggak licin. Nah, kalau bersalju, setelah beberapa waktu, butiran salju akan mencair (kan jadi hangat gitu karena tertimbun butiran-butiran salju lainnya). Tapi, cuaca kan sedang dingin tuh (yang membuat bisa bersalju in the first place kan), sehingga air yang terbentuk tadi akhirnya membeku deh. Nah, airnya ini membekunya bukan jadi salju lagi, tapi jadi lapisan es (dikenal dengan nama black ice)! Nah, lapisan es inilah yang membuat jalanan menjadi licin!

Anyway, keesokan harinya pun tiba.

#989 – My Time in Elementary School

ENGLISH

So, last week I got a homework from Nie. Well, maybe it is kinda out of date now as I am doing this homework just now (it is because I am busy btw * 😎 *), but whatever. It is still a good way to have a nostalgia though.

***

The theme of this homework is “The Time of My Elementary School”. Well, it has not been that long since I graduated from Elementary School (ES), just like eleven years ago, huahaha 😆 . I was going to Pangudi Luhur ES in Yogyakarta, from the year 1994 and I graduated in 2000. The school building was a two-story old building; with each floor being very tall (it was like 6 meter tall for one floor). The first floor was for the 1st to 4th graders, while the second floor was for the 5th and 6th graders. The location was quite strategic as it was very close to the ‘alun-alun utara’ (north square) in Yogyakarta. And because of this location, sometimes the gym class was held in the alun-alun. Well, I generally did not really like gym class, but those time in the alun-alun was definitely my favorite as we occasionally played rounders there! hehe 😀

In ES, I was always one of the “big three” since I was in the first grade. Well, in most cases I was the number 2 though, and the difference with the number 1 was usually just our grade in gym class! hahaha 😆 . He got an 8 and I got a 7! That was it!! Sometimes it kinda sucked. haha. Well, though in some other occasions I was able to be the number 1 though (I made up the loss in my gym grade by performing better in other classes).

Well, in my ES, there was only one teacher per class – though in the fifth and six grades we had “extra” teachers whom taught English and Social Science (during my fifth grade, and this teacher would eventually be our primary teacher in the sixth grade). Okay, let’s talk about two kind of teachers here:

*

1. Favorite Teacher

I had two favorite teachers: Bu (Mrs.) Ngadinah, my fourth grade teacher; and Pak (Mr.) Sardjono, my sixth grade teacher (and my Social Science teacher in my 5th grade).

I loved being taught by Bu Ngadinah because she was such a very patient and kind person especially to me. This is true, she was very patient and kind to all students. She never got mad; a complete opposite of our third grade teacher who was infamous for being fierce. That is why we (my classmates and I) were very glad when we passed the third grade and in the fourth grade we got Bu Ngadinah, hahaha. I still remember though, in Bu Ngadinah’s class, I got a 9.9 (out of 10) in the second trimester final exam for Social Science. In my ES, the final exam was quite difficult. Well, not difficult as in difficult to pass (getting at least a 6), but it was difficult to get good grades (in my standard: above 9.5, haha :P).

And since this event in the 4th grade, I think I got the image of being “the master of Social Science” during ES. Well, by Social Science, I mean I leaned more on the geography part; about history and the other thing, well, I also liked them, but my favorite part was definitely geography, haha. And it matched! Pak Sarjono taught Social Science in my fifth grade. And he became my favorite teacher :P. Pak Sardjono was also a nice and patient teacher, but much firmer than Bu Ngadinah whom was more motherly.

2. Killer Teacher

There were two teachers who were infamous for being killer who taught me in my ES: Bu Ngatilah, my third grade teacher; and Pak Pardi, my fifth grade teacher. Well, they were infamous for being killer just because they were very fierce. If a student was being bad, Pak Pardi would “jenggit” (pulling hair close to the ear, and it hurt as hell!) that student. But since I was a good student, I never had any trouble with both of them, hehe.

*

In my class, there were approximately 40 students. And this class was quite united. But yeah, still, it was mainly divided into two main groups though: boys versus girls. And in each group, there was another smaller groupings usually based on interest (like the group of boys who liked football, etc). It is a shame though that I have sort of lost contact with many of my ES friends ever since we graduated. Well, it is true that Facebook has been helping a lot in reuniting us in the virtual world, but so far there has been no opportunity for real reunion.

In ES, I never skipped class, come on, I was a good student, hahaha 😆 😎 . The reason I did not go to school were usually either I was sick or I had to go out of town with my parents. I also never got into a fight. Well, come to think about it, I was truly a good student back then! hahaha :D. Umm, but it was true though that of course I was involved in some clashes with friends, we were still kids being together for six years after all, but we never got into physical fight. We were too smart for that.

Then, one thing many ES students liked was the allowance. However, my parents turned out to worry about the level of hygiene of the snacks or food sold in my school, and hence they did not give me (and my brother) the so-called allowance! Not a single rupiah! However, still, they brought us snack from home though. And actually, this snack I brought from home was way more elite than the snacks they had in school, as I usually brought bread 😎 . And I was allowed to pick my own bread, and usually I picked the chocolate or cheesy one.

But still, an ES student did not really care with the food being elite or not. And so, I felt jealous with my friends whom got their own allowance to buy food/snacks they liked in the canteen in school. I understood well enough that my parents would not give me any money if I asked them (moreover if I whined for it, well, it would be even more impossible). But my desire to buy some snacks in school made me put on my thinking helmet to make my own money. Well, I will write about this in more detail next time :D. But the point is, I put my thinking helmet on and I ended up running my own business! 😎 Well, it was (of course) just a small business, which turned out to be successful. 😎 From this business (during the “golden time”), I earned much more money than the average allowance my friends got, hahaha 😆 . And because I made these money on my own, my parents could not prohibit me not to use the money; but I was, of course, already smart enough to pick hygienic snacks, hehe.

Anyway, the popular snack at that time was: Anak Mas! Beside that, there were also several other snacks like Gulai Ayam, etc. About toys, well, so far as I recall, I have never bought toy in ES. There was one though, and it was hermit crab! Yeah, it was that small animal with shell. When I was in the 5th-6th grade, this hermit crab was booming and popular in my school. One standard hermit crab cost like Rp 500 (if I recall correctly), and I remember I bought some of them in ES. And all of them died after several days, hehehe.

I do not remember my favorite shoes though. I think they were just standard black shoes, hehehe. About my bags, well, I had kiddies bag with cartoon figure on it. I do not remember which cartoon, but if I am not mistaken it was Dragon Ball; but I am not sure though. But one thing for sure is that it was a kiddies bag… 😀

***

Well, yeah, that is a little bit of my ES story. It turns out to be quite exciting though, writing a post while being nostalgic about one thing, hehehe. Now it is already the time to spread this homework. Hmm, I am not sure to whom I would like to throw this over as this has been going on here for quite a while. But I think I want to throw this to three other bloggers: Ndutyke the TeacherDian, and Sherly, hehehe 😛 Trust me, it is quite a good way to reminisce something nostalgic 😀

BAHASA INDONESIA

Satu kelomang standar gitu harganya sekitar Rp 500,- (kalau aku nggak salah ingat sih). Kalau nggak salah ingat aku beli beberapa kelomang semasa SD. Dan semuanya berakhir mati setelah beberapa hari, hehehe.

Mengenai pakaian, aku nggak ingat sepatu favoritku apa. Sepertinya sih sepatu standar warna hitam gitu deh, hehehe.
