My routing this time was (almost) a carbon copy of my trip back to Europe from my Indonesia Summer Trip back in 2015. The only differences were that (1) Instead of taking flight GA213 from Yogyakarta to Jakarta, I took flight GA211, (2) Instead of Terminal 2, Garuda Indonesia already moved to the brand new Terminal 3 Ultimate in Jakarta, and (3) This time I was entitled the SkyPriority benefits with my KLM status; I hadn’t reached that status yet back in August 2015. Anyway, let the trip report begin!

The route map this year was a carbon copy of my 2015 trip. Created with gcmap.com

Garuda Indonesia GA211 (JOG – CGK)

Flight: Garuda Indonesia GA 211
Equipment: Boeing 737-800 reg PK-GNG
ATD: 15:51 WIB (Runway 27 of JOG)
ATA: 16:46 WIB (Runway 25L of CGK)

After checking-in at the SkyPriority desk, I went to Garuda Indonesia Executive Lounge at the airport. This was my second visit to this small lounge this year, after the first time being earlier this year during my trip back to Amsterdam via Bali, Shanghai, and Paris, haha. Unlike that other time, the lounge was very busy this time around.

The Garuda Indonesia Executive Lounge at Adisutjipto Airport.

Anyway, my flight to Jakarta today would be operated with a Boeing 737-800 reg PK-GNG which had Boeing Sky Interior! From Flightradar24 I knew beforehand that the flight would be slightly delayed, though.

A Garuda Indonesia’s Boeing 737-800 reg PK-GNG at Adisutjipto Airport

Long story short, I went to the gate and was the first passenger to board, haha ๐Ÿ˜› . I settled onto my comfortable 21K seat in the first row of economy. After all passengers boarded, we departed and took off from runway 27 of Adisutjipto Airport. See you, Yogyakarta!

See you, Jogja!

Overall it was a pleasant, regular, short-haul flight with Garuda Indonesia. A snack service was distributed short after take-off. I used the AVOD IFE to listen to some music. And as it was an afternoon flight, I spent most of my time also starring out of the window, haha ๐Ÿ˜› . About 45 minutes later, we were already on descent to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and the flight attendants prepared for landing.

Not long after, we landed at runway 25L of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the farther runway from Terminal 3 Ultimate meaning the taxiing to the stand would be quite long, haha. Anyway, here is the landing video:

Transiting at Terminal 3 Ultimate

It happened that my arrival gate at Jakarta was at the far end of the domestic side of the terminal. Having an international connection made me realize the gigantic size of Terminal 3 Ultimate. I basically had to walk down almost the entire 1.2 km length of the terminal to get to my connecting gate! Haha ๐Ÿ˜› .

White wine at the Garuda Lounge

Anyway, long story short I cleared security and immigration; and then I went to Garuda Indonesia’s International Lounge at the brand new terminal. The lounge appeared to be smaller than its domestic counterpart (see Part II). It a was nice and comfortable lounge with good food and drink selection. As it was an international lounge, white and red wine were also available at the bar section. The wifi connection was also especially fast for Indonesian standard.

Garuda Indonesia GA88 (CGK – SIN)

Flight: Garuda Indonesia GA 88
Equipment: Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GII in SkyTeam Livery
ATD: 21:25 WIB (Runway 25R of CGK)
ATA: 23:38 SGT (Runway 02C of SIN)

I felt very lucky and was very excited when I found out that this Boeing 777-300ER would be my ride tonight:

A Garuda Indonesia’s Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GII in SkyTeam Livery at Terminal 3 Ultimate

Yes, PK-GII, i.e. Garuda Indonesia’s Boeing 777-300ER which was in SkyTeam Livery!!ย ๐Ÿ˜ย It would be my first time ever catching a Garuda bird in this special alliance colour!

Boarding started a little bit late. I was amongst the first passengers to board and settled onto my comfortable 21K seat. This flight to Singapore made me notice the cost-cutting effort the Garuda management has tried to impose to remain competitive. For once, there was no welcome drink in economy like what I got two years ago on this very same flight, haha.

Boarding screen

Anyway, even after boarding completed, we could not depart because we were still waiting for some documents to be completed. This caused a delay of about 30 minutes. And then of course once we actually departed, we had to face the typical long queue for take-off at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. In the end, we could only take off at 21:25 while our scheduled departure time was 20:30.

Waiting on my 21K seat

We took off from runway 25R and made a turn towards Singapore. Not too long after take-off, the dinner service was provided. The choices were beef lasagna or chicken with noodles. I opted for the first along with wine wine and water as my drink of choice. I found the lasagna to be okay. During this time, I also watched two episodes of The Big Bang Theory, haha…

Beef lasagna for dinner and The Big Bang Theory

About an hour later we started our approach towards Singapore Changi Airport and then landed at runway 02C. Here is the landing video:

It was quite a long taxi towards Terminal 3. Transit passengers were told to disembark the plane and the transit time would be one hour.

Transiting at Changi Airport

Another clear cost-cutting effort was the now non-existence of transit stuffies in Singapore. Two years ago, I got a snack box and a S$30 voucher for shopping at Changi. This year, I got nothing! Haha ๐Ÿ˜› .ย And so I just went to the Information Kiosk to get a wifi password before immediately going to the gate to wait for boarding.

No transit stuffies this time around.

Anyway,ย technically, the next flight would be a fifth freedom flight as I would be flying a Garuda Indonesia flight from Singapore to the Netherlands! An aspect which I was quite excited about because it would be my only fifth freedom flight this year.

Garuda Indonesia GA88 (SIN – AMS)

Flight: Garuda Indonesia GA 88
Equipment: Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GII in SkyTeam Livery
ATD: 01:54 SGT (Runway 02L of SIN)
ATA: 07:38 CET (Runway 18C of AMS)

Upon boarding, I found out that my neighbouring two seats were taken by a young couple with a baby! Because my seat was a window seat, I immediately realized that the spaciousness I previously got from my 21K seat would be heavily compromised. After take-off, a baby basinet would be installed occupying most of that space. While this was certainly a discomfort to me, this was actually indeed the “risk” of picking this seat, haha. Of course I could not “win” all the time.

The safety demo

Anyway, long story short we departed after boarding finished. It was almost a full flight to Amsterdam today, with a load factor of at least 95% in economy, which was really impressive IMO! We took off from runway 02L and headed northwest towards Europe.

Another round of dinner service (with the same options) was served not long after take-off. I was still feeling full so I declined the service and only asked for a glass of guava juice, haha. During this time, we were flying above Aceh, not too far away (I guess) from where Cyclone “Dahlia” was the day before. As a result, we faced some not-so-light turbulences, haha.

There were turbulences in this area.

In the meantime, I tried to sleep because I was feeling really sleepy. As a matter of fact, I actually could sleep for about six hours, which was quite impressive for my standard! It also happened that I slept during the part of the flight along the turbulence area, haha. Btw somewhere along the way, the in-between-fuel service was served, which was a salmon sandwich.

The in-between fuel service

I woke up when we were already somewhere above the Turkish airspace. I was quite awake already that I knew trying to go back to sleep would be a futile attempt, haha. So I watched several more episodes of The Big Bang Theory.

About two hours before landing, the breakfast service started. The options were between omelette and chicken with rice; I opted for the latter. To accompany my breakfast, I was torn to watch either Hidden Figures or Trinity, the Nekad Traveller, haha ๐Ÿ˜› . Thinking that it would be difficult for me to watch an Indonesian movie in the Netherlands, I chose he latter ๐Ÿ˜› .

Chicken and rice for breakfast.

Anyway at around 7:15 local time we were already on approach to Schiphol Airport. It was still dark outside when the flight attendants were preparing for landing:

And not too long after, we landed at runway 18C of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Here is the landing video:

PK-GII then parked at gate G5. We disembarked and I cleared immigration. It was awesome that my luggages were delivered at the belt exactly by the time I reached the luggage area! This was certainly because of my SkyTeam Elite Plus status! My luggages were tagged with priority labels so I got to “avoid” the problem of long waiting for luggages at Schiphol! ๐Ÿ˜›

Anyway, then I took the train to Amsterdam Centraal; and here my November 2017 Indonesia Trip officially ended.

THE END.

Garuda Indonesia GA211 (JOG – CGK)

Penerbangan: Garuda Indonesia GA 211
Pesawat: Boeing 737-800 reg PK-GNG
ATD: 15:51 WIB (Runway 27 of JOG)
ATA: 16:46 WIB (Runway 25L of CGK)

Garuda Indonesia GA88 (CGK – SIN)

Penerbangan: Garuda Indonesia GA 88
Pesawat: Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GII dengan livery SkyTeam
ATD: 21:25 WIB (Runway 25R of CGK)
ATA: 23:38 SGT (Runway 02C of SIN)

Garuda Indonesia GA88 (SIN – AMS)

Penerbangan: Garuda Indonesia GA 88
Pesawat: Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GII dengan livery SkyTeam
ATD: 01:54 SGT (Runway 02L of SIN)
ATA: 07:38 CET (Runway 18C of AMS)

Kan nggak mungkin dong ya kita “menang” terus.

Peragaan keselamatan.

Anyway, singkat cerita kami berangkat begitu semua penumpang naik.

Layanan in-between fuel

Ya sudah jadilah aku menonton beberapa episodenya The Big Bang Theory lagi.

Sekitar dua jam sebelum mendarat, layanan sarapan disajikan.

Anywayย sekitar jam 7:15 waktu setempat kami sudah mulai mendekati Bandara Schiphol.

SELESAI.

#2036 – November 2017 Indonesia Trip (Part V: Solo)

ENGLISH

Posts in the November 2017 Indonesia Trip series:
1. Introduction
2. Part I: Getting to Indonesia
3. Part II: Jakarta
4. Part III: Yogyakarta
5. Part IV: The Wedding
6. Part V: Solo
7. Part VI: Back to Europe

It happened that my good friend (whom I met during my one day stay in Jakarta, read Part II) was sent to Solo for work during the second week of my trip. As he would have some free time after work, he invited me and some friends to go to Solo for a short trip. Of course I accepted! ๐Ÿ˜€

So I was back to Solo this year!!

Unlike all my previous trips to Solo (which last took place in 2010) where I always drove or rode a car there, this trip would be unique in the sense that we would take the trains! On top of that, we would take a commuter and an economy train, something which I had never done in Indonesia before!!

Getting to Solo

We took the commuter train Prambanan Express (Prameks) to go to Solo. At first, we planned to take the 10:51 service from Lempuyangan Station. However, as we only arrived at the station (without any ticket) at 10:45, ticket sales for this service was already closed and we could only take the next one at 12:36. Darn, but well…

A Prameks commuter train at Lempuyangan Station

Long story short, the Prameks departed on time. There was no assigned seat in the busy train so quite some people had to stand. Luckily I snatched one seat but my friend did not get one. The ride was, well, bearable especially that it was short-distance; though I felt like the train was moving rather slowly, haha.

Solo

We went to our friend’s hotel to pick him up once we arrived in Solo. After that, we took an online taxi to go to Nini Thowong to get its ice dessert and buy the famous “Sate Kere” nearby. I found the sate to be spicy and that there was not a lot of meat (which possibly explained the “kere” part in its name (“kere” means “poor” in Javanese)). I liked the ice dessert.

Sate Kere

From there, we went to Solo Paragon Mall. I have heard of this mall since years ago but I have not got the chance to visit it; and now, finally I did! Haha ๐Ÿ˜› . The mall was quite spacious, even though I felt like there were not a lot of visitors either.

From the mall, we planned to have dinner. I proposed “nasi liwet” because we were in Solo while my friend proposed “tengkleng”. In the end, we went for my friend’s proposal. We found a place in Google and ordered an online taxi to get there. But then, it turned out the “tengkleng” place was closed that day! Lol ๐Ÿ˜† . So after all we were going to a nasi liwet place, haha ๐Ÿ˜› .

Yay for having some nasi liwet while in Solo.

The nasi liwet was delicious even though, again, it was a little bit too spicy for me. From the nasi liwet place, we went to a “bakpia” store as my friend would like to buy some for his family before going back to the hotel to get my other friend’s stuffs. From there, we went to the train station with, again, an online taxi which driver was rather “creepy” (which possibly explained his rather low rating).

Getting Back from Solo

Solo Balapan Railway Station

To go back to Yogyakarta, we already booked a ticket on Wijayakusuma, an economy class train. The ticket was certainly a lot more expensive than the commuter Prameks train, but the train was faster and seats were assigned to us with the tickets.

As I entered the train, I was immediately impressed! It did not look like what I had in mind of an Indonesian economy class train. It looked clean with good seat configuration; and it even came with a charging station for each seat! Later I found out that what we took was a “Premium” cart, probably similar to the new “Premium Economy” class on flights, haha.

The interior of the economy class train (Wijayakusuma) which surprised me.

While the initial impression was great, once the train departed I realized that, at the end of the day, it was still an economy class product. The bogie was certainly economy class bogie so the ride was not really smooth and there was no sound-proofing. But it was certainly not a problem for such a short ride; though I am not sure for the longer ones.

Anyway, the train was on time as we arrived at Lempuyangan Station. And here my super short trip to Solo ended.

Singkat cerita, kereta Prameksnya berangkat tepat waktu.

Nasi liwetnya enak walaupun, lagi-lagi, terlalu pedas untukku.

Stasiun Kereta Api Solo Balapan

Ketika memasuki keretanya, aku langsung terpesona!

3. Part II: Jakarta
4. Part III: Yogyakarta
5. Part IV: The Wedding
6. Part V: Solo
7. Part VI: Back to Europe

This was the story of my brother’s wedding day from my point of view.

D-1

The final preparation for the wedding started one day before the D-day, and this was where I started to get involved.

A rehearsal in the church

First, we went to the church for a rehearsal for tomorrow’s holy matrimony. At 1 PM, all involved parties (both parents, the witnesses, the bestmen and bridesmaids, core family members, the event organizers, and, obviously, the groom and the bride) arrived at the church. My task was relatively light, though; where I needed to know where my position would be while entering the church and where to sit, haha ๐Ÿ˜› .

At about 2:30 PM, the rehearsal finished. We went to the hotel where the reception would take place, and where we would stay for the next two days. At the time, installation of the decoration in the ballroom already started. There was also a short rehearsal of when the newlyweds would enter the ballroom for the reception; and also the slow dance by the bestmen and bridesmaids.

The executive lounge at the hotel

Then, we went up for some rest. The rooms were located in the executive floors, meaning we got access to the Executive Lounge in the hotel! Haha ๐Ÿ˜› . Some family members also started to arrive so of course there was the usual greeting stuffs.

For dinner, my parents, an uncle, and I went to Ikan Bakar Cianjur nearby as I was craving for some … gurami (a type of Indonesian fresh-water fish)!! Haha ๐Ÿ˜› We ordered “gurami goreng” (fried gurami) and “gurami pesmol” (fried gurami with “pesmol” sauce) along with “tumis kangkung” (sauteed morning glory) and fried tofu. It was delicious!

Gurami dinner at Ikan Bakar Cianjur

We went back to the hotel after that. I would stay in my brother’s presidential suite room for the night, even though by 5 AM the next day I would need to move to my parents’ room, haha. The presidential suite was really cool, btw, as it was very spacious and consisted of four (!) large rooms (a spacious living and dining room, a dressing room, a bathroom, and of course the bedroom)! The bed was already decorated with towels shaped as swans and rose petals; but which would get rid off as those were where my brother and I would sleep that night, haha ๐Ÿ˜› .

The Wedding Day

My alarm clock rang at 5 AM in the morning, indicating I would need to move to my parents’ room. My mom was already gone since 2 AM as she would need to get her make up done. I tried to sleep but it was to no avail, and so I just got up and drank some coffee. Breakfast was delivered to the room not long after. I had some, and went on a quick visit to the Executive Lounge for some extra nibbles, haha ๐Ÿ˜› .

Breakfast

A small ceremony started at 7:30 AM where my parents put the suit on my brother and my brother gave me a box as a “step over present” because he would get married first. Then I would need to lead the way out of the room and cut a red ribbon at the room’s entrance.

I wasn’t involved in the next ceremony where my brother would need to pick up his bride in her parents’ room. I went down at around 9 AM as we would soon depart to the church. The voorrijders (“front riders”?) we hired arrived not long after and so we departed. It was awesome, btw, as we were like VIP on the street where other people had to make some rooms for us and we got to trespass all the red lights ๐Ÿ˜› .

The church was already decorated with all the white flowers and bouquets; and it was very beautiful! We entered the church following the instruction we received the previous day; where I would stand behind my parents who were walking behind my brother who was behind his six bestmen. I took my designated place and once everyone was there, the holy matrimony started.

The holy matrimony

It was a very beautiful holy matrimony where the pastor was awesome as well. People got emotional when the wedding vows were exchanged and during the “I do” moment (I almost cried myself; the keyword here is “almost”, btw ๐Ÿ˜› ).

A busy photo session followed afterwards; and also the official civil matter with the city hall (whose representative came to the church). Then, we went outside the church for another general photo session with everyone with balloons. We unfortunately were not allowed to release the balloons to the air because the space above was part of the crucial approach stage of flights landing at runway 09 of Adisutjipto Airport, haha.

We went back to the hotel from the church. I had a quick lunch at the hotel and took some rest. At 3:30 PM, we went down for a family photo session. Another family event took place afterwards where some family members gave the newlyweds their best wishes and presents (Including myself even though apparently it was quite untraditional given that I wasn’t married; which I found a bit weird as why would wishes and presents were limited to only from married people? Haha).

The decoration was ready

At 6 PM, we entered the ballroom following the designation we received the day before. After a prayer and a toast, the reception started. The huge number of people invited meant the reception would need to be a standing party, which I liked anyway as there would be no chance I would get “stuck” to the same group of people, haha. This also meant I met a lot of people during the course of the evening. In the middle of the reception, of course the newlyweds cut the wedding cake, did their first dance and first kiss.

The wedding cake

Overall, I think it was a successful evening. We were not running out of food (given that it was a standing party, the food was buffet-style), stream of people kept coming in for hours, and a lot of people took pictures, hahaha ๐Ÿ˜† . As for the last point, there was a chariot as a decoration which was particularly quite popular amongst guests, where people even queued to take their pictures there! Haha ๐Ÿ˜›

The crowded ballroom

By 9:30 PM, most guests already left so it was time to wrap up the event. My sister in-law’s brother and I were in charge for the presents. The event organizer handed them over to us, and we brought them up to the presidential suite.

The wedding was, then, over and I went to my room to get some rest.

Sekitar jam 2:30 siang, gladi resiknya selesai.

Mamaku sudah bangun semenjak jam 2 subuh untuk urusan make up, haha.

Kue pengantin

The Weather Situation

With the trip taking place in November, I knew that weather-wise it would not be ideal. This was definitely the case where I barely saw the sun during the almost two weeks there, haha. The upside of this, though, was that the temperature was generally cool during my entire stay there at roughly around 25ยฐC.

However, I certainly did not expect the situation occurring in the second week:

The “Cempaka” Cyclone

A cyclone (named “Cempaka”) was formed to the south of Java and caused bad weather in many parts of the island, including Yogyakarta *Insert Insta Story’s “Superzoom” feature here*.ย  It was pouring non-stop for days and caused a lot of troubles, including floods and landslides. Thankfully I was fine.

Activities and Places

Anyway, let’s move on to the more fun topics. I spent a lot of my time in Yogyakarta hanging out with my friends. We went to some malls, many restaurants, even I got to play tennis for an hour at UGM, haha.

Embung Tambakboyo

I also found out a new-ish place in Yogyakarta called Embung Tambakboyo. This was a small reservoir to the northeast of Yogyakarta where locals used for recreational activities. I saw a lot of people jogging there, which was certainly fun to do especially when the temperature wasn’t that hot. I would say this was a place more for the locals than for tourists; and I am not saying this in a negative light because I believe a good city should provide a place for recreational activities for its people too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Once we also planned to go to the currently “hip” Abhayagiri near Ratu Boko. However, we went there without a reservation and it happened that they were fully booked that day. Darn! As we were already there anyway, I decided to, at least, take a picture of the Prambanan Temple from the hill, haha ๐Ÿ˜› .

The Prambanan Temple

The Food

This time, somehow I did not really go “full throttle” on the culinary aspect, i.e. the food, haha. This is not to say that I wasn’t savouring myself into the wide range of delicious Indonesian cuisine; but rather I was properly managing my diet during a trip, haha. As a result of this, though, I did not gain a lot of weight after the trip! ๐Ÿ˜›

Crispy tofu at Raisin Resto

Anyway, I am not going to list what I had there. I will just post them in the gallery below and let the photos speak for themselves ๐Ÿ˜› .

Situasi Cuaca

From Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, I took a taxi to go straight to my hotel in downtown Jakarta. It was Sunday so the traffic was really clear, haha. Long story short, I arrived at the hotel, checked-in, and went to my room to leave my bags.

My original plan was to rest a little bit at the hotel while waiting for my friend who lived in Jakarta. I told him I would send a message once I was at the hotel. When I got connected to the wifi, it turned out he already asked my whereabout and upon telling him I just checked-in, he mentioned he was already like 10 minutes away! Well, I guess I wouldn’t be able to rest for too long then ๐Ÿ˜› .

The hotel room in Jakarta

I picked my friend up at the lobby and we went to my room as I still needed to organize some of my stuffs. As I mentioned in this post I published while in Jakarta, the main reason I stayed for one night there was for the fitting of my customized suit. I took a quick shower to freshen up before going to Grand Indonesia just nearby where the tailor was located.

The appointment was at 6 PM so I had a hell lot of time to spend before that. But first things first, we had lunch at the foodcourt in the fifth floor. I obviously ordered the legendary “Bakmi GM” along with its famous “pangsit goreng” (fried wonton).

Bakmi GM and pangsit goreng

From there, we walked around the big mall. There were quite many big sale from many shops going on there, and I ended up buying a shirt and a t-shirt. My friend even went crazier, haha.

At 4:30 PM, we found the tailor and my friend suggested me to drop by despite being 90 minutes too early. Who knew I could already fit the suit. I agreed, and indeed the suit was ready. Amazingly, despite having never met anyone from the tailor (They got my measurement only from a formal shirt I bought during my visit to Indonesia last year which we sent to them), everything was perfect, including the formal white shirt and the black trousers! We concluded that there was no need for any alteration and they would ship them to Yogyakarta later that evening with a One Day Service.

The famous water fountain at Grand Indonesia

My agenda completed, we went around the mall again before having dinner at a restaurant in the top floor serving Indonesian-style ribs. From there, we went to a supermarket to buy some stuffs before going back to the hotel because I started to feel really tired! Haha ๐Ÿ˜›

Jakarta in November

My friend and I chatted for hours before he had to leave as he would need to get up early for work the next day. For me, I then took a relaxing bath in warm water before heading to bed, haha ๐Ÿ˜† .

I got up quite late on Monday. My plan was to just take things easy; to go straight to the airport just after checking-out at around noon. I already pre-ordered a taxi, whom already waited for me in the lobby when I was leaving. The traffic was relatively clear today, with “mild” traffic jam nearby the airport, haha. I got off at the brand new Terminal 3 Ultimate of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Equipment: Boeing 737-800 reg PK-GFX

ATA: 19:51 WIB (Runway 09 of JOG)

I was still excited to finally have the experience of using Terminal 3 Ultimate, haha. Indeed, the terminal was much, much better than Terminal 2 (let alone Terminal 1, lol ๐Ÿ˜† )! It felt really spacious and modern!

The check-in area of Terminal 3 Ultimate, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport

I checked-in at the Sky Priority counter and got my boarding pass. The Sky Priority security lane also looked really exclusive!ย Another element I was looking forward too was the new Garuda Indonesia Lounge at the brand new terminal. The lounge turned out to be quite comfortable and spacious. Warm food was also abundantly available but there were little choices for snack.

The Garuda Indonesia Lounge at Terminal 3 Ultimate

Long story short, I left the lounge to go to Gate 13 where my flight would depart from. Again, boarding at Terminal 3 Ultimate amazed me because the air bridge was lit with really cool blue-purple lighting! ๐Ÿ˜› It turned out my flight to Yogyakarta would be operated with PK-GFX, one of Garuda Indonesia’s Boeing 737-800s that were equipped with Sky Interior.

A really cool boarding gate at Terminal 3 Ultimate

We departed on time, but of course there was a long queue to use the departure runway where our flight was number six in the line at the time of arrival. Long story short, finally we got our turn to depart and we took off from runway 25R.

A Garuda Indonesia’s Boeing 737-800 reg PK-GFX at Terminal 3 Ultimate

It was a regular, pleasant, short-haul flight with Garuda Indonesia that evening. There were quite some minor turbulences along the way, which was normal for Indonesia’s rainy season. A snack box and drink service were provided during the course of this short flight. At 19:51, we landed at my favorite runway of Adisutjipto Airport, runway 09, during light rain and so it was not the smoothest landing ever, haha ๐Ÿ˜› .

Pesawat: Boeing 737-800 reg PK-GFX
ATD: 19:02 WIB (Runway 25R of CGK)
ATA: 19:51 WIB (Runway 09 of JOG)

Area check-in di Terminal 3 Ultimate, Bandara Internasional Soekarno-Hatta

Aku check-inย di konter Sky Priority dan mendapatkan boarding pass-ku.

Jadilah memang pendaratannya bukanlah pendaratan yang paling mulus, haha ๐Ÿ˜› .

I chose Garuda Indonesia’s non-stop Amsterdam – Jakarta flight GA89 to get to Indonesia this time.ย This was actually my third time flying this route, as the first two times were three and two years ago, both during the summer.

Starting in late October, Garuda Indonesia operated their Amsterdam route exclusively with their two-class Boeing 777-300ER, a news which I liked because it meant the possibility for me to add new registrations into my logbook. And it turned out I was lucky because Garuda deployed PK-GIK to Amsterdam for my flight today! Aside from being a new registration for me, PK-GIK was also Garuda’s newest Boeing 777-300ER! Yay!

A Garuda Indonesia’s Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GIK was on its way to Amsterdam. A screenshot from flightradar24.com

Anyway I left my apartment to arrive at Schiphol just in time before check-in opened. Thanks to my SkyTeam Elite Plus status from Air France/KLM, I could block a seat in the first row of economy class for free (Otherwise I would have had to pay US$80 extra one way for this seat. Yay! ๐Ÿ˜€ ). I also checked-in my luggage (which I got 50 kg allowance thanks to my status ๐Ÿ˜› ) and got my boarding pass. As usual, then I cleared security and immigration, and waited for the flight at KLM’s Crown Lounge.

Flight: Garuda Indonesia GA 89
Equipment: Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GIK

ATA: 11:14 WIB (Runway 07R of CGK)

I went to the gate a little bit too early, where PK-GIK wasn’t even towed to the gate yet when I arrived there, haha. Long story short, boarding commenced a little bit late and I settled onto my 21K seat. The seat was very comfortable as I got two windows for myself, ample of leg room (for economy standard), and basically free access to the aisle due to the legroom. As a result, I would not need to bother my seatmates whenever I wanted to “go out” of my seat throughout the flight! The first thing I did after sitting down, however, was to charge my phone via the USB port attached to the seat. Haha ๐Ÿ˜›

My seat 21K on PK-GIK
Charging my phone

I observed the flight was quite full today; while the load factor was certainly not at 100%, I estimated it would be somewhere around 70-80%; not too bad in my opinion considering PK-GIK being configured in two-class, meaning significant increase in capacity in economy class. After the doors were closed, we departed from the gate. The safety demo was played and the flight attendants distributed mineral water. At 16:09, we took off from runway 24 of Schiphol under the rainy Dutch Fall weather.

Taking off from runway 24 of Schiphol during rain

Just after take-off, a snack service was provided which consisted of a bag of peanuts and the flight attendants went another round to distributed the amenity kits, which consisted of a pair of socks, a pair of ear plug, and an eye pad (which is quite a “luxury” in long-haul economy class as not all airlines provided these! Garuda, you rock!).

A mandatory selfie because I paid for the wifi

I decided to purchase the wifi access for the duration of the flight, which price I found fair enough. The cabin was then dimmed with purple mood lighting and the purser announced the planned service throughout the flight. The sun set not long after take-off, probably when we were already somewhere above Czech Republic, thus providing me with this beautiful view from my window:

A sunset view

About an hour after take-off, the dinner service was provided. The choice was chicken with rice or beef with potatoes. I opted for the latter where the beef was served in mustard sauce and potato wedges, which was delicious.ย I accompanied the dinner with Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them which I watched at the AVOD screen. I started to feel sleepy after the dinner and the movie; but then I made a “mistake” by going to the lavatory which for whatever reason made me “awake” again, lol ๐Ÿ˜† .

The complimentary dinner service on board flight GA89

Nonetheless, I decided to try to sleep anyway by wearing my eye pad, though unfortunately it ended with no avail. Some light snacks (chips, energy bars, and peanuts) were served in the galley, btw. And about eight hours into the flight, the in-between fuel service, in the form of chocolate muffin, was served. The flight attendants were also very attentive. I was wearing my eye pad trying to sleep during the service, so she quietly placed two (!) muffins and a mineral water on my tray (which I intentionally left open as a place holder) without me noticing!

I was able to sleep for about an hour after that, and I woke up when we were already above the Bay of Bengal. I noticed the light was already out outside so I peeked out the window and got the following beautiful morning view:

A morning view above the Bay of Bengal

At this point, I decided I would not sleep anymore as we were already approaching Indonesia anyway. So I turned on the AVOD and watched Despicable Me 3, haha. It was a nice coincidence btw that I watched Despicable Me 2 also on board flight GA89 to Indonesia two years ago! ๐Ÿ˜›

The flight entered Indonesia from the north of Sabang, then passed Lake Toba down along the island of Sumatra to Jakarta. During this time, the breakfast service was provided where the options was a chicken frittata or beef with yellow rice. I opted for the latter which was quite delicious too!

At about 11 AM, the flight started its descend towards Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and the cabin crews prepared for landing.

Earlier the first officer mentioned we would land at runway 25R, but eventually we landed at runway 07R of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Here is the landing video:

PK-GIK then had to make the long taxi all the way to Terminal 3 Ultimate. I was quite excited about this because it would be my first time ever using this brand new terminal! Haha ๐Ÿ˜› . I got off from PK-GIK and entered the arrival area, which turned out to be just an alley leading to immigration and the arrival hall.

Speaking of immigration, upon check-in at Schiphol I was given the following card:

A Fast Track card

thanks to my SkyTeam Elite Plus status. Yep, a “Fast Track” card so I could use the priority lane at immigration in Jakarta! It was quite helpful as there were a few international arrivals at around the same time! Yeay Garuda! ๐Ÿ˜€

My luggage was also one of the first to come out in the carrousel thanks to the priority label. I then went out the terminal building and got a taxi to go to Jakarta for the first time in more than seven years.

Hore!

Anywayย aku berangkat dari apartemenku ke Schiphol pas ketika check-in dibuka.

Penerbangan: Garuda Indonesia GA 89
Pesawat: Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GIK

ATA: 11:14 WIB (Runway 07R of CGK)

Pemandangan matahari terbenam

Sekitar satu jam setelah lepas landas, layanan makan malam dibagikan. ย Aku makan malam sambil menontonย Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Themย dari layar AVODnya. Setelah makan malam dan selesai menonton film, aku mulai merasa ngantuk; tetapi kemudian aku membuat “kesalahan” dengan pergi ke toilet karena entah mengapa, ketika kembali duduk aku jadi “nggak ngantuk” lagi dong, haha ๐Ÿ˜† .

Layanan in-between fuel kali ini: coklat muffin

This morning, my Garuda Indonesia fifth freedom flight GA 88 with a Boeing 777-300ER reg PK-GII landed at Amsterdam from Singapore; thus ending my November 2017 trip to Indonesia this year. Obviously I am still quite tired now and actually tomorrow I am already going back to work; and this is on top of the grocery shopping which I need to do today! Haha ๐Ÿ˜› . But anyway, I am now writing this introduction post to start the series of this trip of mine.

First of all, speaking about th flights (obviously ๐Ÿ˜› ), I was very, very lucky in this trip! I had never flown all of the Garuda Indonesia planes I took before this trip (so this was great for my logbook); and on top of that: the return Europe – Indonesia flights were operated with the two newest Garuda’s Boeing 777-300ER: PK-GIK and PK-GII! Also, PK-GII was painted with SkyTeam Livery!! Yeah, this was my first time flying a Garuda’s bird in SkyTeam Livery!

Anyway, as I shared a few weeks ago, the main agenda of this trip was my brother’s wedding. So I shaped this trip around this, obviously, joyous event but this also meant “less travelling”, which actually I did not mind at all as I felt like I could enjoy some relaxing time in Indonesia.

Shaping the trip around the wedding resulted in a visit to Jakarta where I needed to go to the tailor my brother had arranged to get my body measurement for my customized suit. This was my first time in Jakarta in more than seven years and this short stay allowed me to catch up with a good friend of mine who wouldn’t be able to come to Yogyakarta the weekend after for the wedding due to work commitment. Only staying in Jakarta for one night just after arriving from Europe which also implied terrible eastward jetlag meant, unfortunately, not many opportunities to go around and enjoy the capital. But well, it is for the next time, I guess…

Jakarta in November

The wedding itself was, of course, festive and really fun. It started with the holy ceremony in the church in the morning followed by the reception in the evening; but there were also a few tradition things taking place here and there. I was given a few guests quota which I used to invite my good friends in the city, haha.

Ready for the wedding

Obviously the week before the wedding was more hectic with the wedding stuffs. The week after was much more relaxing (I guess not only for me but for everyone involved too, haha ๐Ÿ˜› ), where I could enjoy my time relaxing and hanged out with my friends around the city. During this time, I also made quite a last-minute travel plan to go to Solo for a one day trip.

Back in Solo!!

And here I am now, back in Amsterdam in the winter where tomorrow I am back at work ๐Ÿ˜› . As usual, here are a few (more) teasers of this trip:

Pertama-tama, ngomongin pesawat (jelas dong ๐Ÿ˜› ), aku beruntung banget di perjalanan kali!

Jakarta in November
