#2425 – A Short Visit to Lavaux

on

ENGLISH

Lausanne was located at the “edge” of Lavaux, a region famously known for the beautiful terraced vineyards that it made the UNESCO World Heritage Site list! So obviously on my weekend trip to Lausanne in mid-August, I tried to make some ways to see and enjoy this region 😀 .

For this, thankfully similarly to Geneva, Lausanne also provided free public transportation card for visitors via their accommodations for their duration of stay. And what was cool was that this card’s coverage was really wide, as follows:

which also partially covered the Lavaux region (region 19 in the map above). Yeay, it certainly made the visit easy and more affordable! Haha 😛 .

Some googling prior to the trip pointed me towards the Cully region (Lavaux extended way beyond the map above, but because Cully was in the map, it caught my attention, haha 😆 ). Some further research also informed me there were twice hourly train from Lausanne Railway Station to Cully, convenient enough schedule-wise!

But then once in Lausanne I got a better idea. I knew the region was hilly and from Cully I would need to hike up the mountain towards the direction of Grandvaux to get to the vineyards. And Grandvaux was in the above map as well, so I thought it would be more convenient to go to Grandvaux instead, hike down the mountain (instead of “up” so it would be less intense, haha 😆 ), and come back to Lausanne from Cully! Such a brilliant idea which was still within what the free transportation card allowed! Yay!

A map of the Lavaux region

The only thing was that there was only one hourly train service from Lausanne to Grandvaux, but this wouldn’t be a problem at all as this would be my departure trip. So I arrived at Lausanne Railway Station about 10 minutes before the S4 train which would take me to Grandvaux would depart at.

An S4 train at Lausanne Railway Station

Long story short, the train departed on time (typical Swiss train, haha). It was only a ten-minutes ride to Grandvaux, but the view was very scenic! For this, I’d recommend sitting on the right side of the train as the railway was high up on the mountain and I was presented with unobstructed view of Lake Geneva and the beautiful vineyards of Lavaux! Beautiful!

The Grandvaux Railway Station turned out to be a very small station, which was located literally next to a vineyard! It was quite a warm day today so I took my light jacket off and headed down towards the vineyards!

Lavaux vineyards

My general sense of direction was to go down the mountain. I knew Cully was supposed to be down there somewhere so I was heading towards a settlement which I guess would likely to be Cully, haha.

Cully?

The view along the way was breathtaking, which thankfully was enhanced by the great weather I had in Switzerland today. There were vineyards everywhere I turned my head to, along with some winding roads in between. There weren’t that many people around today too, though I’m not sure if this was the norm or an exception due to COVID-19, haha.

Anyway, I guess a fun activity in the region would be to find a vineyard that was open and do a wine tour. But due to COVID-19, I decided against this idea; plus I was not sure if there was any wine tour operating these days anyway, haha.

Lavaux view

It didn’t take me that long to reach the settlement which I guess would likely to be Cully; which turned out to be Cully indeed, haha. I walked towards the train station, and lucky me there would be a train back to Lausanne departing in three minutes! I decided to get on this train and went back to Lausanne. Though now that I think about it, perhaps I could have waited for the next one and explored the small village of Cully first instead. But oh well, haha…

So yeah, the Lavaux region was indeed really beautiful! I do understand now why it makes the UNESCO World Heritage Site list; and I do recommend you to go there if you are in the neighbourhood! 😀

BAHASA INDONESIA

Singkat cerita, keretanya berangkat tepat waktu (tipikal kereta Swiss lah, haha).

Ah tapi sudahlah, haha…

Stasiun Kereta Api Cully

Jadi ya begitu deh, regio Lavaux memang beneran indah banget! 😀
