Schiphol Airport was somehow very busy today. Even the KLM’s SkyPriority check-in area was somehow super crowded; a sight which I had never seen! Anyway, I checked-in there (even though I didn’t check-in any luggage as I was travelling hand-luggage only for this trip) and got my boarding pass. The usual priority security lanes were also not open today, and obviously immigration check was also quite busy (Though this wasn’t really out of the ordinary at Schiphol).

I then went to the KLM’s non-Schengen Crown Lounge, but with relatively low expectation as the lounge had not “wowed” me overall up to this point. But then I learned that by this time, the new second half area of the lounge had been opened! In theory this should improve the capacity but contradictorily the lounge still felt crowded, overall. It might have something to do with the general ‘ambience’ of crowdedness at Schiphol today, though. Anyway, IΒ was able to get a seat by the window with a great view to the apron, but I found the seat (and the surrounding seats) to be quite uncomfortable as they all had no padding.

Having said that, one aspect actually impressed me, that was the food offering which they had stepped up. More varied choices were available, including the healthier ones like salad, poke bowls, and fresh juices. There were less self-service options, though, especially for the (alcoholic) drinks where we had to order via the bartenders. This wasn’t that nice on a busy day but on the other hand actually gives a “bar” feeling to it which might be also nice.

Anyway, my flight today would be operated with PH-BHF, a KLM’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that is named “Hibiscus”. It would be only my second time flying a KLM’s 787, btw, after my KL 605 flight to San Francisco in December 2017, which strangely happened to also be my last flight with a Dreamliner prior to this! Haha πŸ˜› . This would also be only my second Amsterdam – New York (John F. Kennedy) non-stop flight after my Delta DL 49 flight in December 2015.

Boarding started well on-time, where I settled onto my Economy Comfort seat 10A. Row 10 is my favorite row on KLM’s 787s due to my preference for a window seat. This row being the first row in Economy Comfort meant that my window seat pretty much had a direct aisle access, haha. Having said that, I still prefer the equivalent row on KLM’s 777s though (also row 10) which offers even larger legroom, which is better for a night flight as I then could “stretch” when trying to sleep, which is not possible (with my height) on the 787. But specifically for this flight, this wasn’t a problem because it was a day flight.

Anyway boarding went quite efficiently where the last passenger boarded the plane minutes ahead of the scheduled departure time. During boarding, a purser came to my seat and welcomed me personally on board. Complimentary earphones were also distributed but I chose not to get any because usually the quality was super bad, haha. Long story short, we got the permission to depart and took off from runway 24.

Right after take-off, refreshing towels and a small bottle of water were distributed. It was then followed with the lunch service, which came in two options today: meatballs or vegetarian pasta. I opted for the former and while it was good, this was like the gazzilionth time I had this dish on a KLM’s long-haul flight, lol πŸ˜† (Case in point: on the aforementioned flight to San Francisco, on a flight to Singapore earlier this year, and on a flight from CuraΓ§ao in 2016, to name three). I really wish KLM had a little bit more variety with their menu! An apperitif service followed which I asked for a cognac and a cup of water.

IFE-wise, I found nothing really interesting in the movie or TV shows sections. So I ended up just listening to some music, haha. The music library was decent, though; and to celebrate KLM’s 100th birthday, they had albums containing popular songs in the Netherlands by decades, haha.

Some snacks were available at the rear galley which passengers could help themselves with. I really liked that muffins from the lunch service that some passengers chose not to eat were served there; thus reducing the amount of food waste!

KLM’s 787s were also equipped with wifi. And fortunately they have matched what Delta offered, that was the wifi was free for any text messaging (on WhatsApp, Facebook Messengers, Instagram Direct, etc), which was quite nice. I didn’t buy any package on this instant because I was feeling cheap, haha πŸ˜› .

About an hour or so before landing, a warm snack service was provided. This time, it was a serving of a small, warm pizza. It was … well, edible, haha. We were then already approaching John F. Kennedy International Airport. After a few turns, which allowed us sitting on the left side of the plane to get a view of Downtown Manhattan in the background, we landed smoothly at runway 4R.

PH-BHF parked at a gate in Terminal 4. Immigration was quite busy but actually it went really efficiently, which was really nice! I then headed straight towards the AirTrain station (as I was travelling hand-luggage only so I didn’t need to wait for my luggage at the carousel πŸ˜€ ) to get to New York.

So yeah, overall the KLM flight was pleasant; but I couldn’t help feeling that somehow it felt underwhelming. All the KLM crews were great, btw, where in the middle of the flight another purser came to my seat and greeted me. The crew also proactively offered the passenger sitting on the aisle seat next to me a good compensation because his IFE screen, while still working, was wobbly which made it quite inconvenient. But the meal, snack, and IFE options were, somehow, below average, I must say.

Anyway, here, my (long) weekend in New York officially started!

Entah mengapa Bandara Schiphol ramai sekali hari ini. Bahkan area check-in SkyPrioritynya KLM juga ramai banget loh; pemandangan yang nggak pernah aku lihat sebelumnya! Anyway, aku check-in di sana (Walaupun aku tidak memasukkan bagasi sih karena untuk perjalanan ini aku cukup dengan bagasi kabin saja) dan mendapatkan boarding pass. Dua lajur sekuriti yang biasanya digunakan untuk penumpang prioritas juga tidak dibuka hari ini, dan tentu saja area imigrasinya ramai (Tapi ini mah biasa sih di Schiphol).

Aku kemudian mampir di Crown Lounge non-Schengennya KLM, tapi dengan ekspektasi rendah karena sejauh ini lounge-nya tidak begitu terasa “wow” untukku. Tapi kemudian aku baru tahu bahwa saat ini bagian kedua lounge-nya sudah dibuka loh! Secara teori seharusnya kapasitasnya jadi bertambah kan ya tapi kenyataannya cukup kontradiktif karena lounge-nya toh tetap terasa ramai. Tapi ini mungkin ada hubungannya dengan aura Schiphol yang memang hari ini ramai sekali ya. Anyway, aku beruntung mendapatkan kursi kosong di samping jendela dengan pemandangan kece ke apron bandara, tapi aku merasa kursinya (dan kursi-kursi di sekitarnya) kurang nyaman karena tidak memiliki bantalan.

Walaupun begitu, satu aspek yang berkesan bagiku adalah level pilihan makanannya yang sudah ditingkatkan. Ada lebih banyak pilihan yang juga bervariasi, termasuk pilihan yang lebih menyehatkan semacam salad, poke bowls, dan juga jus-jus segar. Tapi tetap pilihan self-service-nya tidak sebebas dulu lagi sih, terutama untuk minuman (beralkohol) dimana kita harus memesan melalui bartendernya. Ini tentu kurang praktis di hari-hari ramai tapi di sisi lain juga memberikan nuansa “bar” sih, yang mana bisa jadi positif.

Anyway, penerbanganku hari ini akan dioperasikan dengan PH-BHF, sebuah Boeing 787-9 Dreamlinernya KLM yang diberi nama “Hibiscus”. Ini akan menjadi kali kedua aku terbang dengan 787nya KLM, btw, setelah penerbangan KL 605-ku ke San Francisco Desember 2017 lalu, yang mana kebetulan juga penerbangan terakhirku dengan Dreamliner sebelum ini! Haha πŸ˜› . Ini juga akan menjadi kali kedua aku terbang di rute non-stop Amsterdam – New York (John F. Kennedy) setelah penerbangan Delta DL 49-ku di bulan Desember 2015.

Boarding dimulai tepat waktu, dan aku duduk di kursi Economy Comfort 10A. Baris nomor 10 adalah baris favoritku di pesawat 787nya KLM karena preferensiku untuk duduk di kursi jendela. Baris ini adalah baris pertama di Economy Comfort yang berarti praktis kursi jendelaku memiliki akses bebas ke lorong kan ya, haha. Walaupun begitu, aku masih lebih suka baris yang ekuivalen di 777nya KLM sih (juga baris 10) karena memiliki ruang kaki yang lebih lapang, yang mana lebih enak untuk penerbangan malam karena aku bisa “meluruskan” kaki ketika tidur, yang mana ruangnya tidak cukup besar (untuk tinggi badanku) di 787. Tapi untuk penerbangan ini, hal ini bukan masalah karena adalah penerbangan di siang hari.

Anyway boarding juga berlangsung efisien dimana penumpang terakhir naik pesawat banyak menit sebelum waktu keberangkatan. Sewaktu boarding, purser penerbangan ini mendatangiku dan memberikan ucapan selamat datang personal kepadaku. Earphone komplimen kemudian dibagikan tetapi aku menolaknya karena biasanya kualitasnya jelek banget, haha. Singkat cerita, kami mendapatkan izin berangkat dan lepas landas dari landasan pacu 24.

Setelah lepas landas, handuk basah dan sebotol kecil air mineral dibagikan. Ini kemudian diikuti dengan layanan makan siang, yang datang dengan dua pilihan: bola daging atau pasta vegetarian. Jelas aku memilih yang pertama dan walaupun rasanya enak-enak aja, ini adalah kali ke sejuta (lebay, haha πŸ˜† ) aku mendapatkan menu ini di penerbangan jarak jauhnya KLM nih, haha πŸ˜† (Sebagai contoh: di penerbangan ke San Francisco yang kusinggung di atas, di penerbangan ke Singapura awal tahun ini, dan di penerbangan dari CuraΓ§ao di tahun 2016). Ah, aku berharap kateringnya KLM lebih kreatif nih dalam pemilihan menu! Layanan aperitif kemudian mengikuti makan siang dimana aku meminta cognac dan air putih.

Dari segi IFE, kali ini aku tidak menemukan film atau pun acara TV yang menarik. Jadilah aku cuma mendengarkan musik saja, haha. Pilihan musiknya oke sih tapi; dan untuk merayakan ulang-tahunnya KLM yang ke-100, mereka memiliki album-album yang berisi lagu-lagu yang populer di Belanda berdasarkan dekade, haha.

Pilihan snack juga disediakan di dapur belakang pesawat dimana penumpang bebas mengambil sendiri. Aku suka dimana muffin dari makan siang yang tidak dimakan oleh beberapa penumpang juga disediakan di sini; sehingga mengurangi banyaknya sampah makanan yang terbuang sia-sia kan ya!

Boeing 787nya KLM juga dilengkapi dengan fitur wifi. Dan bagusnya KLM telah menyamai apa yang ditawarkan Delta dimana wifi gratis dipergunakan untuk pengiriman pesan teks apa pun (baik itu melalui WA, Facebook Messengers, Instagram Direct, dll), yang mana lumayan banget kan ya. Tapi kali ini aku memutuskan untuk tidak membeli paket internetnya karena sedang merasa pelit, eh, hemat maksudnya, haha πŸ˜› . .

Sekitar satu jam sebelum mendarat, layanan snack hangat dibagikan. Kali ini, menunya adalah seporsi kecil pizza hangat. Rasanya … yah setidaknya bisa dimakan lah, haha. Kemudian pesawat kami sudah dekat dengan Bandara Internasional John F. Kennedy. Setelah berbelok sekian kali, yang memberikan kami yang duduk di sisi kiri pesawat pemandangan Downtown Manhattan yang kece di kejauhan, pesawat mendarat mulus di landasan pacu 4R.

Halo lagi, New York!!

PH-BHF parkir di Terminal 4. Imigrasi hari ini tergolong ramai, tapi pergerakannya efisien lho, asyik lah! Dari sana aku langsung pergi menuju Stasiun AirTrain (enaknya bepergian hanya dengan tas kabin adalah aku tidak perlu menunggu bagasi diantarkan di area bagasi πŸ˜€ ) untuk pergi ke New York.

Jadi, secara keseluruhan penerbangan KLM ini tergolong mulus-mulus aja sih; tapi rasanya juga agak underwhelming deh. Kru KLM di penerbangan ini juga baik, btw, dimana di tengah penerbangan purser kedua juga menyapa dan menyalamiku di kursi. Krunya juga proaktif memberikan kompensasi yang besarannya lumayan banget ke penumpang yang duduk di kursi lorong di sebelahku karena layar IFEnya goyah-goyah (“wobbly” maksudnya), walaupun sebenarnya masih menyala dan bisa dipergunakan, tapi tentu jadi nggak nyaman kan ya. Hanya saja pilihan makanan, snack, dan IFEnya yang agak di bawah rata-rata, menurutku.

Anyway, di sini, perjalanan akhir pekan (panjang)-ku di New York resmi dimulai!
