Garuda Indonesia Explore GA 7036 (DPS–LBJ)

To get to/back from Komodo, we flew Garuda Indonesia, who deployed their Explore brand on their Komodo routes at the time.

From Bali, we took the direct Garuda Indonesia Explore flight GA7036 with an ATR72-600. I was excited about this as it would be my first time flying a Garuda’s ATR72; and that my last flight with this plane type was in August 2015 with Wings Air! Haha 😛 .

The Garuda Indonesia Domestic Lounge at Ngurah Rai Airport

After checking-in and clearing security, I went to the Garuda Indonesia Business Class Lounge and brought my brother as a guest. The lounge had two floors, with big windows towards the apron and runway on the upper level. The upper level was also more quite so I would definitely prefer this level, though there was more food selection on the lower level. It was overall quite a nice domestic lounge I must say.

Boarding a Garuda Indonesia Explore’s ATR72-600

Long story short, boarding started early where we were brought with a bus to our aircraft. Today the flight would be operated with PK-GAH. We settled onto our seats in the first row which was also the emergency row on this aircraft. The legroom was decent though for taller people (like me in Indonesia 😛 ) it might be still too limiting to stretch legs.

The legroom

Anyway, the flight then departed on time and took off from runway 09. It was overall a very smooth flight towards Labuan Bajo. A snack box was served during the flight, along with some drinks.

About an hour later, we started the approach towards Komodo Airport. And wow, the view was amazing!! 😍 We smoothly landed at runway 17, and here is the landing video:

Komodo Airport was such a small airport that it took literally just a minute-ish (as shown in the video above) of taxi to get to the parking stand, haha.

Garuda Indonesia Explore-Jet GA 453 (LBJ–CGK)

As there was no direct flight to Yogyakarta from Labuan Bajo, we had to transit in Jakarta. So we ended up taking the following routing:

Yep, such a long detour 😛 .

At the time, flight GA453 was operated with Garuda Indonesia Explore-Jet’s Bombardier CRJ1000 reg PK-GRK. Anyway, I found Komodo Airport to be quite spacious, though there was no Garuda lounge.

Anyway, I settled onto my 21A seat in the first row of economy, which legroom to be much better than in the ATR72. The flight then took off from runway 35 of Komodo Airport. The view upon take-off was amazing, btw, as we were flying over the beautiful islands of the Komodo National Park!

The view upon taking off from Komodo Airport. You could see the airport.

It was another smooth flight to Jakarta. Perhaps it was quite ironic though that this was my longest domestic flight with Garuda thus far, and it was on board an aircraft without IFE! Haha 😛 . Btw, since then I have noticed that Garuda has upgraded this flight and deployed a Boeing 737-800 instead.

The meal service on board Garuda Indonesia GA453

Anyway, a meal was served on this flight. There was no option, though, but what they served, fish with yellow rice, was quite good. Of course it was served with some drinks too. Otherwise, as there was no IFE, it was an uneventful flight to Jakarta. Two hours after take-off from Labuan Bajo, we landed at runway 25L of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Garuda Indonesia GA 216 (CGK–JOG)

At Soekarno-Hatta Airport, the Garuda lounge agent denied me access to the lounge arguing that I wasn’t entitled lounge access because I was only flying domestically today and my SkyTeam Elite Plus status was with Air France/KLM and not Garuda Indonesia, even though Garuda literally put the words “SkyTeam Elite Plus” at the lounge’s reception. I have since then filed a complaint to Garuda, but their “great” customer service has yet responded to it. So much for a five-star airline…

The Blue Sky Lounge at Terminal 3 Ultimate

Oh well, and so we decided to wait at the Blue Sky Lounge, which actually was closer to the gate anyway, haha. Our flight to Yogyakarta was delayed by almost two hours, btw. Compensation (a snack box, as per regulation) was provided at the gate, though the passengers would need to proactively ask and grab it.

The delay compensation

Boarding finally started, where we would fly their Boeing 737-800 reg PK-GNA today. We took off from runway 25R and made a turn towards Yogyakarta. The weather above Central Java wasn’t the best today. We encountered some turbulence and so we made a detour circling the cloud (which through the window I saw producing lots of lightning), but resulted in longer flying time, haha.

Anyway, as per usual, a snack box and drink service were served on the flight. And not long after, we started our decent towards Adisutjipto Airport. Above Kulon Progo, I could clearly see the construction of the New Yogyakarta International Airport, which looked really bright at night. PK-GNA then landed at runway 09 and then it was the usual 😀 .

Garuda Indonesia Explore GA 7036 (DPS–LBJ)

Boarding ATR72-600nya Garuda Indonesia Explore

Sekitar satu jam kemudian, kami mulai turun menuju Bandara Komodo.

Garuda Indonesia Explore-Jet GA 453 (LBJ–CGK)

Garuda Indonesia GA 216 (CGK–JOG)
