Getting to Bucharest

Flight: TAROM RO362
Equipment: Boeing 737-300 reg YR-BGA named “Alba Iulia”
ATD: 12:05 CET (Runway 18L of AMS)
ATA: 15:20 EEST (Runway 08R of OTP)

Ever since I knew I was going to Bucharest to attend my friend’s wedding, I knew it was the perfect opportunity for me to try TAROM for the first time ever😀 . So we (read: my parents and I) did.

We chose the convenient 11:50 AM flight out of Amsterdam, so we left Delft just before 9 AM. At Schiphol, we checked-in at KLM’s priority check-in area (TAROM is a member of SkyTeam), at which our checked-in luggages were tagged with the priority label, and were assigned our seats. The evening before I managed to snatch seat 3A, a window seat in the first row of economy with ample legroom while my parents were assigned seats in the middle of the plane (I booked our tickets separately).

Long story short, we passed the security check and border control; and arrived at the gate. Not long after, YR-BGA, a TAROM’s 23 year-old Boeing 737-300 (Yeay a Boeing 737 Classic!), arrived at the gate. Soon enough, boarding started. It was visible from the interior that YR-BGA was 23 year-old. The cabin looked old with outdated seats; though comfortable nonetheless.

After boarding completed, we departed and took off from runway 18L of Schiphol Airport. The plane turned east just after take-off, starting the 2.5 hours flight to Romania. A lunch service was provided on this flight. There was no choice of meal; but I found the meal to be quite decent especially for a European flight with a European airline standard. I got a small package of chicken pasta with bread and a brownies cake as the dessert. Of course a selection of drinks were provided as well. Moreover, not long after the meal was provided, a second service of warm drinks were served. I was quite impressed and satisfied.

The rest of the flight went rather uneventful as there was no AVOD screen and the only IFE was just the magazine, haha😆 . Anyway, at around 15:20 local time, we landed at runway 08R of Henri Coanda International Airport in Bucharest. Here is the landing video:

We passed the border control with no problem. However, the priority labels on our luggages were pretty much useless as our luggages were the last one to be unloaded from the plane.😦 From the airport, we took a taxi to go to downtown Bucharest, as my Romanian friend suggested (and we were super glad we listened to his advice).

Bucharest

In general, I found Bucharest to be a pretty city with a lot of parks and big old buildings. However, the buildings also reflected that Romania was still not as developed as many Western European countries; but this was probably not surprising.

The old town area in the centre of Bucharest was full of bars and restaurants. The area was only accessible by foot which made it nice to visit. Several small Orthodox churches stood in the city as well. We got the chance to enter a few of them; and they did look nice and were definitely “different” from other churches.

Unfortunately we did not have a lot of time to spend in Bucharest due to the wedding and the Dracula Tour that we had already arranged. Nonetheless, we did the several walking routes suggested in the free Bucharest map that we got from our hotel. This allowed us to see the important sites close to the Old Town, which were nice. However, we did not get the chance to visit the Herăstrău Park. We heard this park was beautiful with a nice museum (Muzeul Satului) in it. Okay, next time, then🙂 .

A (Fatty) Culinary Capital

In July, Aggy wrote a post about Bucharest as a surprising foodie destination. Well, after this trip, I can testify affirming this statement!!

First of all, being an Eastern European country, we found the price to be generally “cheap” when we compare it to the standard Dutch price (haha😛 ).

Second of all, and more importantly, the food was AWESOME!! Pretty much everything we had was delicious. In general, though, I found the Romanian food to be big (in serving) and fatty. Plus, it appeared to me that polenta was a popular source of carbohydrate there; much to my delight, of course😉 .

We visited the famous Caru’ cu Bere in the old town area twice; where I had a traditional pork confit and a gigantic pork knuckle (which I shared with my dad). We also went to Hanu’ lui manuc and Hanu’ berarilor which my Romanian friends recommended. Both restaurants were great.

While in Bucharest, I also got the opportunity to try out the Romanian KFC, haha😆 . While by default it could not be my favorite KFC (due to the non-existence of crispy chicken), they provided really good handmade tomato sauce!!

Menuju Bucharest

Penerbangan: TAROM RO362
Pesawat: Boeing 737-300 reg YR-BGA bernama “Alba Iulia”
ATD: 12:05 CET (Runway 18L of AMS)
ATA: 15:20 EEST (Runway 08R of OTP)

Kami melewati pemeriksaan paspor tanpa masalah.

Sebuah Ibukota Kuliner (Penuh Lemak)

A serving of pork knuckle at Caru' cu Bere

  1. Glad you enjoyed yourself, especially the foodie part of the trip haha. Isn’t Bucharest loaded with foodie options?! And good call on the taxi to the airport, it’s either a booked taxi or a bus (though bus for a first timer is rather complicated).

    1. Thanks! Indeed the foodie part was heavenly in Bucharest! Lol😆 .

Yes, my friend insisted that it was better to just get a taxi. We are glad we followed his suggestion. Though Uber appears to have become a more popular option nowadays as well😀 .

    1. Landing-nya mulus kok.

Hahaha, bedaaa Py. Negaranya sebelahan sih tapinya, Romania ddan Hungaria, hahhaha😆
