#1770 – AvGeek Weekend Trip #2 (AMS – MAD – FRA – AMS)

ENGLISH

In late June, I did my second ever Avgeek Weekend Trip. This time, the class of travel and route were a little bit fancier than normal. One of the flights was in a “real” business class and the route was like this:

Amsterdam - Madrid - Frankfurt - Amsterdam. Created with gcmap.com
Amsterdam – Madrid – Frankfurt – Amsterdam. Created with gcmap.com

This trip took the entirety of my weekend (from early Saturday morning until the evening of Sunday) as I spent some time in Frankfurt as well. Anyway, here is the trip report.

KL 1699 (Amsterdam – Madrid)

Flight: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines KL 1699
Equipment: Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGT
ATD: 07:07 CET (Runway 18L of AMS)
ATA: 09:21 CET (Runway 32R of MAD)

The star of this trip was obviously LATAM Chile’s fifth freedom Madrid – Frankfurt route. So to make sure that I would arrive in Madrid in time for the LATAM Chile’s flight and have enough margin for “just in case” scenario, I chose the KLM’s first flight to Madrid which was scheduled to depart at 7 AM.

The downside of this plan was obviously the 7 AM schedule. I forced myself to sleep early the evening before (it did not work really well but at least I got some sleep) and got up at 3 AM. I took the 4:14 AM night train from Delft and arrived at Schiphol at around 5 AM.

Apparently the priority line for security check at Schiphol had not even been opened yet that early in the morning. But the regular line was not very busy anyway so it was okay. The KLM Crown Lounge had been opened but not everything was already set and ready yet; but it was not really a problem as at least the super basic stuffs (coffee and some food for breakfast) were already available. At around 6:30 AM I walked to the gate at which boarding started immediately after I arrived. I entered PH-BGT, a Boeing 737-700 serving the KL 1699 flight today, and settled myself on seat 7A. Long story short, we departed on time and took off from runway 18L of Schiphol Airport.

The captain announced that the flight to Madrid today would take 2 hours and 15 minutes, so this would be my longest European KLM flight so far, haha😆 . About 45 minutes into the flight, the warm snack breakfast service was distributed. It consisted of a long pretzel sandwich with cheese, eggs, and some spinach; and of course the standard drink options as well. To be honest, the sandwich was not really my favorite even though it was decent enough especialy because it was warm and the size was good for a 2 hours + flight.

The rest of the flight was rather uneventful where I managed to get a short nap. The flight attendants went on a second round of snack service where they distributed small packs of sweet cookie about 45 minutes before landing. I was sleeping when they did this so I missed it, haha. At 9:21 AM, we landed at runway 32R of Madrid-Barajas Airport. Here is the landing video:

Transitting at Madrid-Barajas Airport

In Madrid, KLM used Terminal 2 while LATAM Chile used Terminal 4. Unfortunately, there was no airside shuttle between the two terminals so I had to take the regular shuttle bus to get to Terminal 4. At Terminal 4, I immediately went to the security check because I already checked-in online. Given that I was flying business class, I tried to use the VIP fast track security lane but the officer denied me saying that LATAM Chile did not have any cooperation with them. Weird. But well, okay, the regular security check line then for me.

The downside of flying LATAM Chile’s fifth freedom Madrid – Frankfurt route was that officially the flight was operated outside of the Schengen area since it was a tag-on from Santiago. Consequently, I had to clear immigration both in Madrid and Frankfurt. It was quite funny though that I would be physically flying from Madrid to Frankfurt above four Schengen countries in the entirety of the trip but I was officially not in Schengen😛 .

Anyway, because it would be a non-Schengen flight, I had to go to Terminal 4 Satellite (4S). As a business class passenger, I was granted access to the Iberia’s Executive Lounge at Terminal 4S. The lounge was very busy that morning with a lot of Oneworld flights (Iberia, American Airlines, LATAM Chile, LATAM Brazil) departing soon. I really liked the lounge especially because it provided such a great view of the tarmac so I could sit on the sofa and watch planes moving around. This was heaven! 😍😍😍

LATAM

Flight: LATAM Chile LA 704
Equipment: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner reg CC-BBH
ATD: 15:26 CET (Runway 36R of MAD)
ATA: 17:31 CET (Runway 25L of FRA)

A business class trip report of this flight has been published some time ago.

I boarded CC-BBH and settled into my comfortable seat 1A. The flight attendant served me a glass of pisco sour, a glass of champagne, and a small serving of mixed-nuts prior to departure. I loved the pisco sour, btw!

A few minutes after 3 PM, we left the gate. Not long after, we took off from runway 36R of Madrid-Barajas Airport.

About 30 minutes into the flight, hot towels were distributed and followed by the snack service. There was only one option for the service but it was a very proper one: a plate of salad and ham with bread (which was really good); plus a very delicious dessert. Oh, and I had a glass of red Chilean wine as my accompanying drink too🙂 .

Somehow, time flew by much faster in business class than in economy class, haha😆 . To me, it felt like suddenly we were already approaching Frankfurt just not long after take-off! Haha😆 . The weather in Frankfurt was not in the best condition though, where we encountered some rather rough turbulence while descending. It was quite rough that one FA who was collecting empty glasses had to sit at one of the vacant seats for her safety. My empty wine glass fell to the floor too because of the turbulence, haha. But it was okay. At 5:31 PM, we landed at runway 25L of Frankfurt Airport. Here is the landing video:

It was visible in the video above we still had to clear some layers of cloud upon descent!

I was one of the first passengers to leave the plane. This was very nice because as a result I was also one of the first passengers to arrive at the immigration control so I did not have to wait, haha😆 .

I will skip this part of the trip in this post😛 .

KL 1772 (Frankfurt – Amsterdam)

Flight: KLM KL 1772 operated by KLM Cityhopper
Equipment: Embraer ERJ190 reg PH-EZX (SkyTeam Livery)
ATD: 18:00 CET (Runway 25R of FRA)
ATA: 18:47 CET (Runway 18C of AMS)

After waiting at the Air France/KLM Lounge at Frankfurt Airport, I went to the gate and was excited to see PH-EZX there. PH-EZX was an Embraer ERJ190 in SkyTeam Livery. This flight would be my first ever flight with a plane in SkyTeam livery! Yeay!!

Boarding commenced on time and efficiently. Not long after, we departed and took off from runway 25L of Frankfurt Airport. It was a regular short-haul KLM flight where sandwich service was provided. In terms of the taste, I actually liked the sandwich better than the warm pretzel sandwich though, btw, haha😆 .

At 6:47 pm, we landed at runway 18C of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. And here my second Avgeek Weekend Trip ended.

BAHASA INDONESIA

Amsterdam - Madrid - Frankfurt - Amsterdam. Created with gcmap.com
Amsterdam – Madrid – Frankfurt – Amsterdam.

Anyway, mari trip report-nya langsung kita mulai.

KL 1699 (Amsterdam – Madrid)

Penerbangan: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines KL 1699
Pesawat: Boeing 737-700 reg PH-BGT
ATD: 07:07 CET (Runway 18L of AMS)
ATA: 09:21 CET (Runway 32R of MAD)

Pramugarinya membagikan layanan snack ronde kedua dimana mereka memberikan cookie manis kecil sekitar 45 menit sebelum mendarat.

Surgaaa 😍😍😍.

Pesawat: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner reg CC-BBH
ATD: 15:26 CET (Runway 36R of MAD)
ATA: 17:31 CET (Runway 25L of FRA)

Pisco sour-nya enak banget, btw!

Beberapa menit setelah jam 3 sore, kami berangkat.

ATA: 18:47 CET (Runway 18C of AMS)

  1. Penasaraaan naik kelas bisnis haha.. Zilko, lupa pernah nanya ini atau engga. Apa waktu kecil pernah cita – cita jadi pilot?

Emmm, kalo suamiku suka pesawat juga. Tapi dia takut terbang. Agak aneh haha

    1. Hahaha soalnya nggak praktis Ky. Kan enak kalo bepergiannya kyk domestik gitu jadi borderless 😝.
