#1441 – 2014 US Open

ENGLISH

So this is the time of the year again, where the final grandslam tournament of the year, the 2014 US Open, has just been concluded. And as usual, here is a short review about it๐Ÿ™‚

Women’s Singles

All eyes were set on Serena Williams. After finishing 2013 brilliantly, she was subpar in the first three grandslam tournaments this year; losing in the fourth round, second round, and third round of the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon, respectively. She has not had a totally disastrous year overall though, as she performed quite decently on the regular WTA tournaments. However, as a player at her calibre, who is chasing tennis record to break; grandslam performance obviously gets the priority.

After the disappointing Wimbledon, she has built her tennis form, collecting a 12-1 win/loss record on the US Open warming up tournaments; with the one loss came in the hand of her sister, Venus Williams, in the semifinals of Montreal. So she was in a good form coming to the US Open. But the cloud of doubt still lingered as the US Open was a grandslam; and she hasn’t been performing well at the grandslams this year.

Speaking of which, the draw fell apart once again. The second and third seed, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova, lost in the third round. The fourth seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, even lost in the second round. The fifth seed, Maria Sharapova, lost in the fourth round. In fact, Serena Williams was the only top 8 seed that advanced to the quarterfinals round. In the end, Serena reached the final by not only without dropping a set, but also not dropping more than three games per set. She would face her very good friend, Caroline Wozniacki, who was competing in her second grandslam final, after the same tournament five years ago. Serena was able to continue this streak, beating Wozniacki 6โ€“3, 6โ€“3 in the final.

This title means Serena has just set a very historical milestone in her legendary career:
– This is her 18th grandslam singles title, thus officially tying two tennis legends, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova; the second most in the Open Era (only behind Steffi Graf at 22)
– By winning the tournament AND performing the best during the US Open Series, she received a total prize money of $4,000,000. The most any tennis player, male or female, has received in a single event in a tournament in history! (Last year she shared the, then, record of $3,600,000 with Rafael Nadal).

Men’s Singles

Due to the nature of the Big Four’s dominance basically in the last many years, it was, again, a bit hard to see someone else other than them (except for Nadal, who withdrew from the tournament due to an injury) lifting the trophy in the end. However, this year, the dominance seems to have entered the resurgence phase, where more players were able to challenge them in the big stages. But still, nevertheless, they (especially Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer) were the favorites.

Both of them did advance to the semifinals where Djokovic would face Kei Nishikori and Federer would face Marin ฤŒiliฤ‡. It appeared as it would be another Djokovic – Federer final. But boy oh boy, this was tennis; and everyone must play the actual tennis match before being declared a winner is for a reason, a good one. First, Nishikore upsetted Djokovic in four sets. Later on,ย ฤŒiliฤ‡ defeated Federer in straight sets!๐Ÿ˜ฏ One word: WOW!! So finally, for the first time since the Australian Open 2005 (that was literally 9.5 years ago), the final of a grandslam men’s singles does not involve either Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, or Andy Murray!

I did not watch the final though (because it was Monday night in the Netherlands, and I had to work on Tuesday), but in the end, Marinย ฤŒiliฤ‡ won his first grandslam title with aย 6โ€“3, 6โ€“3,ย 6โ€“3 victory over Kei Nishikori.

Men’s Doubles

Back to a legendary achievement, Bob & Mike Bryan also reached a very big milestone in this tournament. They won their 16th grandslam doubles title together; and on top of that, this title was their 100th title together!๐Ÿ˜ฏ Wow that is some records!

BAHASA INDONESIA

Sudah tanggal-tanggal segini lagi, jadi artinya turnamen grandslam terakhir tahun ini, US Open 2014, baru saja berakhir. Dan seperti biasanya, berikut ini review tentangnya๐Ÿ™‚

Tunggal Putri

๐Ÿ˜ฏ Keren banget ya rekornya!
