#1424 – 20 Hours Trip from NL to ID

ENGLISH

Here is the story of my trip from the Netherlands to Indonesia earlier this week😀 .

***

On Saturday evening, the night before my departure, I was already so excited to see which of Garuda Indonesia’s 5 Boeing 777-300ERs they would deploy for my GA 89 flight the next day. Btw, at the moment (July 2014), Garuda has five Boeing 777-300ERs with registration: PK-GIA, PK-GIC, PK-GID, PK-GIE, and PK-GIF (you can think an airplane’s registration number like a car’s number plate). It was very easy to do that: just check which one they deploy for the GA 88 flight (the inbound one from Jakarta) the evening before, and obviously this aircraft would be used the day after as GA 89. I checked Flightradar24 that evening and I found this one:

PK-GIA was flying over Sri Lanka as GA 88 on 27 July 2014.
PK-GIA was flying over Sri Lanka as GA 88 on 27 July 2014.

which meant that my GA 89 flight the day after would be operated with PK-GIA. Yay!🙂 Actually, PK-GIA is Garuda’s “oldest” Boeing 777-300ER; but even so, it was delivered from Boeing on 24 June 2013, so it was still just 13 months young!😀 Moreover (avgeek warning here), I was excited because the registration, PK-“GIA” is a special one for Garuda as it coincides with Garuda’s ICAO code, GIA, haha. And this was the reason I chose to use a PK-GIA’s photo in this post.

***

Anyway, so let’s get to the actual day of my trip.

Since the flight was scheduled to depart at 12:35 PM, I left my apartment at around 8:45. Not-so-long story short, I arrived at Schiphol at around 9:45 and I directly went to Garuda’s check in counter. And guess what I found? This:

A very long line for Garuda Indonesia's check in counters at Schiphol
A very long line for Garuda Indonesia’s check in counters at Schiphol

Yes, there was a super long line for Garuda’s check-in counters! Hahaha😆 . It seemed it would be a full flight, I thought (and I was happy for Garuda though as it meant they should make good profit from this flight, right? :D). Long story short, I finally checked-in (and I got my boarding pass for my connecting flight to Yogyakarta there already as well). I passed the immigration and went to the gate. I was still too early at that time so the gate was still occupied with a Singapore Airlines’ (SQ) flight to Singapore. At that time, PK-GIA was still parked at a remote area parking spot.

After the SQ flight departed, the gate was opened for Garuda’s flight. So the crews (including the air-stewardesses) and some passengers decided to go through the security check at the gate to enter the departure gate. But then, a drama occurred which would cause quite a delay on the Garuda’s flight. Suddenly, a Cathay Pacific’s Airbus A340-313 reg B-HXA entered the now vacant parking spot at the gate. I was like: “Umm, but I want to go to Jakarta now, not Hong Kong!”, huahaha😆 . Then I saw one Garuda’s ground air-stewardess came down to the tarmac and talked with the guys there. Apparently, they parked the airplane at the wrong spot (well, obviously🙄 ) as the Cathay Pacific’s flight to Hong Kong was supposed to depart from the next gate! Haha😆 . So they had to move the Airbus A340-313 to its actual gate so PK-GIA could enter the gate. This (minor ?) error in the end caused a delay of around 30 minutes!😯

Anyway, after PK-GIA was parked at the gate and the crews prepared the aircraft for departure. The boarding process started at around 12:35 PM. Long story short, I entered the aircraft and sat on my seat. After all passengers boarded the plane, we departed the terminal. At around 13:00, we took off from runway 24 of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

After the fasten the seatbelt sign was switched off, I tried to connect to the internet through the wifi onboard. But then, as I said in the previous post, somehow I could not access the payment page so I could not use the wifi. Btw, here is the actual flight path of the route today, as seen from the on board IFE:

The actual flight path from Amsterdam to Jakarta

Not long after take-off, the air-stewardess started the snack service, which was a bag of mixed nuts and drink. Then, somewhere above Hungary, the lunch service started. The choices were fish with lemon sauce or rendang with rice. Well, it was such an easy option, obviously I went for the rendang one! Hahaha😆 . It was quite a nice service. The portion was a little bit small and I did not know what the chicken broth was for though, but it was still nice. I used the IFE and decided to watch Despicable Me 2.

Being a non-stop Amsterdam – Jakarta service, this flight was the longest non-stop flight I had ever taken in my life up to this point, haha😆 . On my previous Indonesia – Netherlands flights, I always stopped in Dubai. This time, we also flew over Dubai though; and to me, this pretty much marked that we were already half way! Haha😆 . Anyway, I decided to go to the back of the plane where I could get free snacks! Huahaha😆

The shy Garuda's air-stewardess and the snacks at the galley.
A shy Garuda’s air-stewardess and the snacks at the galley.

Somewhere above India, the in-between fuel service started where they gave us a very tasty cream cheese sandwich. Also, the weather was not quite pretty so there were a few minor turbulences. But still, it kinda prevented me from sleeping, haha. Being a difficult sleeper myself already, this obviously did not help at all. And somewhere above the southern Bay of Bengal, one of the passengers got a medical situation that the air-stewardesses made an announcement asking for a help if there happened to be a passenger who was a doctor. Luckily there was. After it was over, we were already approaching Aceh and the sun was about to rise! So I felt like I would just not sleep for the rest of the flight, haha😆 .

Somewhere above Medan, the sun rose and it was so beautiful! Also, the breakfast service started. They offered either fried rice with fried chicken or omelette with sausage. I went with the fried rice. I watched an episode of Friends to accompany myself during breakfast.

Not long after (well, by “not long” I mean about 1 hour 20 minutes; it was not long compared to the entire trip of 14 hours! Huahaha😆 ), we started the descent to Jakarta. At 08:08 WIB (local time), we landed at runway 25R of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. Here is the landing video btw:

Btw, yes, the welcoming announcement after landing was made in three languages, Indonesian, English, and Dutch, haha. We parked at a gate in Terminal 2E and we disembarked the flight. The disembarkation process was quite quick though. Btw, here, the longest non-stop flight I had ever taken in my life thus far was officially over.

***

But my trip had not ended yet as I still had my connecting flight to Yogyakarta. On schedule, I had a 3 hours time of transit. So the one hour delay from Amsterdam did not really affect me that much since now I still had two hours. I passed the immigration (I managed to avoid long lines since most non-Indonesian passengers had to queue for the Visa On Arrival first, huahaha😆 ) and went to Terminal 2F immediately. I did not have to take care of my luggage since my luggage had been tagged all the way from Amsterdam to Yogyakarta immediately. So in Jakarta I did not have to do anything, haha. I still had about 1 hour before the scheduled boarding time of my connecting flight, so I decided to wait in one of the executive lounges at Soekarno-Hatta (for free, haha😛 ).

Terminal 2F of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta
Terminal 2F of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta

Then, literally when I was about to take some rice and chicken curry at the lounge, the boarding announcement for my flight was made. Damn! Haha😛 . I went to Gate F5 where my GA 206 flight to Yogyakarta was scheduled to depart. The airplane was parked at the remote area apparently so they took me (and the other passengers obviously) with a bus to get to Garuda’s remote area parking spots at Soekarno-Hatta. There were several Boeing 737-800s at that time, and the closest one was PK-GEH. I was like, “Please, don’t stop here, let it be not PK-GEH“. But then, the bus stopped and indeed, apparently my GA 206 would be operated with PK-GEH. Damn.

Well, the reason I did not want PK-GEH was that because I knew PK-GEH was one of the older Boeing 737-800s in Garuda’s fleet, haha. It was delivered in April 2002 and it did not have the personal IFE on board! Haha😛 . It was actually not bad though, but the thing is, I knew Garuda had many other newer Boeing 737-800s which offered better in flight entertainment system, haha😀 . But the Jakarta – Yogyakarta flight was only 48 minutes in the air anyway so it was not that long and not having on board IFE was not the worst thing to happen, I think😛 .

***

Anyway, the flight departed on time at 10:15. And at 10:30, we took off from runway 25R of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Here is the actual flight path of GA 206 today:

The actual flight route path of my GA 206 flight from Jakarta (CGK) to Yogyakarta (JOG) on 28 July 2014. Source: The actual flight route path of my GA 206 flight from Jakarta (CGK) to Yogyakarta (JOG) on 28 July 2014. Source: http://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ga206/#3ecc6a7

I took it from the historical data in Flightradar24 since, as I said, PK-GEH did not feature a personal IFE so I could not take a snap of the actual flight path which was usually shown in the IFE. Anyway, as usual, Garuda’s in flight service was excellent though, as they offered generous complimentary snack on this short flight (something I rarely (if not never) find on short-haul European flight with a European carrier).

At 11:20, we landed (not so smoothly though, especially for Garuda’s standard) at ruwnay 09 of Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta. Here is the landing video:

Btw, my camera battery went dead just when the airplane reached the end of the runway and this is why the video stopped a bit sooner than all my other landing videos, haha😛 . Then, I took my luggage at the arrival hall.

And here, my 20 hours trip from Delft to Yogyakarta this time ended😀 .

BAHASA INDONESIA

PK-GIA was flying over Sri Lanka as GA 88 on 27 July 2014.

***

Anyway, mari kita langsung ngomongin perjalanannya aja.

A very long line for Garuda Indonesia's check in counters at Schiphol

The actual flight path from Amsterdam to Jakarta

Huahaha😆

The shy Garuda's air-stewardess and the snacks at the galley.

Aku memilih nasi goreng aja. Sambil sarapan, aku menonton satu episode-nya Friends.

A beautiful sunrise view somewhere above Medan.

Huahaha😆 ), kami mulai turun mendekati Jakarta.

Terminal 2F of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta
Terminal 2F Bandara Internasional Soekarno-Hatta, Jakarta

***

Ngomong-ngomong, penerbangannya berangkat tepat waktu, jam 10:15.

  1. Did they change the route – avoiding Ukraine – after MH17? Because I always flew on that route whenever I’m flying with SQ.

Garuda has made into some top 10 list of best airline in the world so naturally I would like to try but since they’re not flying up here (Scandinavia), it’s rather difficult point to try🙂 (too lazy to go to Amsterdam first). I’ve only flown with Garuda domestic so I am wondering how it’s like to fly with them long haul. I’ve tried different airlines and so far have decided to stick with SQ.

    1. As far as I know, Ukraine’s airspace is not part of Garuda’s route in the first place anyway, even since before the MH 17 tragedy. So they did not “change” the route technically😛 .

I have never tried SQ so I can’t really compare them. Indeed Garuda is still behind in the international routes that they offer. They mainly focus on routes to/from East Asia and Australia it seems🙂 . But I read somewhere that this Amsterdam route has performed better ever since they made it non-stop (before, they must make one stop in Abu Dhabi/Dubai).😀

    1. Iya, seru kalau perjalanan jarak jauh memang.

    1. Trims Non.😀

Nggak serem Non, paling cuma goyang dikit kalau memang pas harus melewati area yang cuacanya lagi kurang baik. Tapi kalau jarak jauh gitu pesawatnya kan gede, jadi lebih nggak goyang deh, hehe.

Tapi sekarang aku ngerti ceritamu Non.

  2. SUGENG RAWUH Mas Zilko.
Btw kok turun yogyes menang dirimu orang yogya ko…?

      Thanks!
