#1412 – 2014 Wimbledon Championships

ENGLISH

Today, the third grandslam tournament of the year, the Wimbledon Championships, was concluded. As usual, here is a review and some of my takes on it.

Ladies’ Singles

The ladies’ singles was, as usual, very open. Even though Serena Williams was (still) the favorite coming to the tournament, she hadn’t been performing well in the grandslam this year. So she wasn’t as a heavy favorite coming to this tournament as last year.

In the end, the ladies’ singles draw fell apart once again. Serena Williams lost in the third round to Alize Cornet; in a match which, in my opinion, was strange because Serena was not herself in the second and third set by playing so passively. She was brilliant in the first set though, dominating the match which was the reason why she won it handily 6–1. So that is why I (still) do not understand why suddenly she “changed” this in the second and third (which ultimately cost her the match). Maria Sharapova lost in the fourth round to Angelique Kerber; Li Na lost in the third round as well. The best match of the tournament, in my opinion, was between the 2011 champion, Petra Kvitova, and the five time Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams. Too bad it had to happen in the third round. It was a high-quality match throughout, and in the end Kvitova won 5–7, 7–6(2), 7–5.

In the end, Petra Kvitova reached her second Wimbledon and grandslam final, where she would face a young rising Canadian, Eugenie Bouchard. Bouchard has been quite consistent this year, reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open and French Open as well (though, arguably, she also profited a little bit from her open draw; but nevertheless, she still did her job, which was winning these matches🙂 ). Anyway, in the final, Kvitova played magnificently and showed that at the moment, she was in a different class than Bouchard. In the end, Kvitova won her second Wimbledon and grandslam title after beating Bouchard 6–3, 6–0 in just 55 minutes.

Gentlemen’s Singles

Andy Murray was the defending champion and he came to this tournament having just appointed Amelie Mauresmo as his coach; a decision which was quite controversial in the sense that Amelie is a woman (I mean, come on people. Does gender really matter?🙄 ). He performed very well in the first week but lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. Rafael Nadal also had a bad Wimbledon for the third straight time, failing to reach the quarterfinals after losing in four sets to a young rising player from Australia, Nick Kyrgios.

But in the end, the Big Four still pretty much showcased their dominance, where Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer reached the final. The final was an exciting match; and it offerred some drama as well. Djokovic was up 5–2 in the fourth set where he was already 2 sets up. He was serving for the match at 5–3 but then got broken, and at 5–4 on Federer’s serve, he got a championship point; which Federer saved with an ace. Federer won five games in a row in that set and sealed it 7–5! Djokovic also called the trainer early in the fifth set. But in the end, he was able to hang in there and finally won the match 6–7(7), 6–4, 7–6(4), 5–7, 6–4 to claim his second Wimbledon title.

BAHASA INDONESIA
