#1398 – 2014 French Open

ENGLISH

Today, the second grandslam tournament of the year, the 2014 French Open, was concluded; so it is the time for me to write a brief review about it, as usual, haha๐Ÿ˜› . Btw, I will publish the next part of my long weekend trip to the French Open later on this week; so stay tuned!๐Ÿ˜€

Men’s Singles

As usual, it is very hard to imagine someone other than the Big Four to win this title. Well, especially for this year, someone other than the current top 2 in the world, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. However, unlike all the previous years where Nadal had always been the favorite to win this grandslam, this year he came to the tournament not as the overwhelming favorite. I mean, sure, he was still the favorite (at least in my book), but it was not that overwhelming. He had unexpected loss to David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, respectively, this year. And Kei Nishikori troubled him in the final of Madrid. And of course his loss to Novak Djokovic in the final of Rome.

And indeed, these two players advanced to the final. And this final would put everything on the line. Obviously the winner would get another grandslam title; but on top of that was that whoever came out on top, he would be the world no.1.

In the final, Novak Djokovic took the first initiative by winning the first set 6โ€“3. But after a very tight second set which ended with a few superb shots by Nadal at the end of it where he clinched it 7โ€“5, Nole went a little bit awry in the third and early of the fourth set. He was able to regroup but in the end Rafa was a little bit stronger. So Rafael Nadal won his ninth French Open title beating Djokovic 3โ€“6, 7โ€“5, 6โ€“2, 6โ€“4, establishing (even) stronger than Stade Roland Garros is his playground.

Women’s Singles

The women’s side is, as always in the past a few years, very open. Well, probably not that open as the previous years though because Serena Williams defended her title in Rome so she was, once again, the favorite to defend her French Open title. However, she surprisingly lost in the second round. As usual though, everytime Serena lost in a big tournament, suddenly it feels like the draw gotย wide open, haha๐Ÿ˜† . And the fact that the other highest seeded players lost early as well (second seed Li Na lost in the firstย round, third seed Agnieszka Radwanska lost in the third, and fifth seed Petra Kvitova in the third as well) did not help the case.

But the remaining favorites somehow hanged on and stayed alive in the draw; even though not without their own problems. Maria Sharapova came from behind in three consecutive matches to reach the final; while Simona Halep did not drop a set en route to her first grandslam final.

The final match turned out to be a tight three setter that lasted three hours. Sharapova, however, was always a little bit in front in the entire match; even though Halep was able to play the catch-up game to keep toe in toe. However, in the end Sharapova won her fifth grandslam title with a 6โ€“4, 6โ€“7(5), 6โ€“4 victory over Simona Halep.

This was the first time in her career that Maria Sharapova won a grandslam singles title more than once.

BAHASA INDONESIA
