#1335 – 2013 Year End Trip (Part III)

Previously on 2013 Year End Trip: Zilko went to West England for the Christmas and New Year holiday season. After five days there, he had been to Bristol, Birmingham, and Manchester. Now, on the first day of the year 2014, he was ready to explore for more…

Day 6 (Wednesday, 1 January 2014)

I decided to have breakfast at my hotel today, which was a continental one. Well, I don’t know, but now I kinda feel like I like the full English breakfast better than the normal continental breakfast, hahaha πŸ˜† . Anyway, my two main destinations for today would be the Old Trafford Stadium and the Intu Trafford Centre. Btw,Β the weather today was quite awful as it was gloomy and very windy all day long! 😯

Long story short, so I took the tram to get to Old Trafford. The stadium itself was about 800 meter from the tram stop. At first, my plan was to take the museum tour to get inside the stadium. Well, pretty much similar to my experience in Santiago BernabΓ©u Stadium in Madrid one year ago. But unfortunately, because there would be a match held there later on this afternoon (between Manchester United and Tottenham), the museum was closed so there would be no tour! πŸ‘Ώ Damn! In combination with the weather, now I wished I would have gone there the day before! Hahaha πŸ˜†

But I was already there so the least that I could do was obviously to take pictures from the outside, hahaha πŸ˜† . At this time, my digital camera was jammed for quite some time though which frustrated me a little bit. But after giving it some time, it went back to normal. I also stopped by at the official shop to buy some stuffs for my brother.

Then, I left the stadium and walked back to the tram stop. I took the tram and got off one stop later (haha πŸ˜† ) at Stretford to take the bus service to Intu Trafford Centre. And what can I say? Well, this shopping centre is the most magnificent one that I had been to in Europe! (Well, the “in Europe” part is important to stress here; as we know the shopping centres in Jakarta are so magnificent as well! Hahaha πŸ˜† ).

Intu Trafford Centre in Manchester

I spent around two and a half hours here (including having my lunch and buying some new on sale shirts πŸ˜› ) before deciding to leave. I took the bus again to go back to Stretford, and from there took the tram to get back to my hotel. Btw, the tram was already quite crowded at this time with people marching in to Old Trafford stadium to watch the football match! Hahaha πŸ˜† .

For dinner, I decided to go to the city centre and had dinner at Jamie’s Italian again πŸ˜€ . This time, I ordered rump steak with polenta chips. Then after walking around for a little bit I went back to my hotel.

Day 7 (Thursday, 2 January 2014)

I got up quite early today because I had to catch my train to Liverpool at 9:35 AM from Manchester Piccadilly station. I did not even have time for breakfast! Hahaha πŸ˜† . Anyway, yes, the theme of the day was a one day trip to Liverpool. I already bought my return tickets online since before I left (because there was a really good promotion! I only paidΒ Β£7 for a return ticket! 😯 ).

I arrived at Manchester Piccadilly at around 9:20 AM and walked directly to platform 14 where my train would depart from. I bought a sandwich from a store; in case I got hungry on the way, haha. The train to Liverpool departed on time. Long story short, about 50 minutes later I arrived at the Liverpool Lime Street station. And here my one day outing in Liverpool started 😎 .

I ate my sandwich as my breakfast at a cafe in the station (where I also bought a cup of cappuccino so they would let me sit there, πŸ˜› ). Then, what I did in Liverpool was just a walking tour (pretty much) around the city centre. Some of the old buildings across the city centre were well-preserved so they looked nice. I reached the Albert Dock at around noon.

Walking around, I found The Beatles Story, a museum in Liverpool about, well, the name is so self-explanatory here πŸ˜€ , the super famous The Beatles. I decided to enter the museum (even though it was quite expensive in my opinion though, atΒ Β£12.95 per person). But I must say, even though it was kinda small too, it was quite a nice museum! I mean, especially if you are such a big fans of The Beatles, haha. I wouldn’t classify myself as a big fans of them; but obviously I am familiar with many of their famous songs! πŸ˜€ So I could enjoy the museum! πŸ˜€

After that, I walked back towards the city centre where I found, well, yet again, a shopping centre! Hahaha πŸ˜† . But first thing first, I was feeling quite hungry already so I needed to find a restaurant. Long story short I decided to have lunch at an all you can eat Asian restaurant forΒ Β£6.50 per person. Not bad, I must say πŸ˜€ .

Then, it was still around 13:40 while my train back to Manchester was scheduled at 18:52. So I decided to: watch a movie at the cinema! Huahaha πŸ˜† 😎 . Btw, yes, it was the first time ever I actually watched a movie in a cinema in Europe! Seriously! πŸ˜€ . After scanning their schedule, I decided to watch The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. This was actually the second movie of The Hobbit trilogy, and I actually had not watched the first one 😳 . While in the end I still could figure out the story line, I found it a little bit more difficult than my similar experience with The Hunger Games though. Nevertheless, it was still a good movie and I enjoyed it throughout. πŸ˜€

Btw, this cinema in Liverpool was quite “unique” for me in the sense that the seating was free! Hahaha πŸ˜€ . It was like seating in some low-cost carriers; so we could sit anywhere we liked as long as we were in the right zones (there were a few zones dedicated to the more expensive ticket holders). But at some point it was also a little bit annoying because we had to move to make room for a group of people so they could sit together…

After the movie, I decided to walk around the city centre and then had dinner at a KFC. Then I walked back to Liverpool Lime Street station waiting for my train back to Manchester. Long story short, at 18:52 my train back to Manchester left Liverpool, and about 50 minutes later I arrived at Manchester Piccadilly station. Then I went back to my hotel.

Day 8 (Friday, 3 January 2014)

Before checking out, I decided to have breakfast at a Frankie & Benny’s restaurant near my hotel to have their full English breakfast. Then I checked-out, took the tram to Manchester Piccadilly, and took the airport train to the Manchester Airport.

Long story short, I checked-in and passed the security check. At around 13:00, my flight, a KLM’s Boeing 737-7K2 reg PH-BGP nicknamed “Pelican” landed at runway 23R of the airport. At 13:25, the boarding process started and at 13:45, our KL 1084 flight to Amsterdam took off from runway 23R too. About one hour later, our flight landed at runway 18R of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport which was the furthest runway (from the terminal) at Schiphol! Hahaha πŸ˜† . Here is the landing video btw:

Anyway, then it was the normal stuff. I got off the plane, went through the immigration desk, took my luggage, and then took a train back to Delft. And here, my one week year end trip to West England officially ended…

Singkat cerita, aku naik tram untuk menuju Old Trafford.

The Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester

Intu Trafford Centre in Manchester

Tapi memang sih, walaupun rada kecil museumnya, isinya memang oke deh! Apalagi kalau pengunjungnya fans beratnya The Beatles, haha. Aku sendiri bukanlah seorang fans beratnya The Beatles sih; tetapi tentu saja aku amat familier dengan lagu-lagu terkenalnya mereka itu! πŸ˜€ Jadi tentu saja aku bisa menikmati museumnya! πŸ˜€

Lirik lagu “Imagine” di The Beatles Story

Singakt cerita, aku memutuskan untuk makan siang di sebuah restoran Asia all you can eat yang harganya cuma Β£6,50 per orang loh.

Beneran! πŸ˜€ Setelah melihat-lihat jadwalnya, aku memilih Β untuk menonton The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The flight route map from Manchester Airport (MAN) to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS)

Peta rute penerbangan dari Bandara Manchester (MAN) ke Bandara Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)

Singkat cerita, aku check-in dan melewati pemeriksaan sekuriti.

Anyway, selanjutnya seperti proses biasa sih.
