#1332 – 2013 Year End Trip (Part I)

Day 1 (Friday, 27 December 2013)

My flight was scheduled to depart at 9:25 from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. So today I got up at around 5:30 AM, had my breakfast, took a shower, and then went to the airport. Long story short, I arrived at Schiphol at around 7:30 AM and it was the usual stuffs (dropping my luggage at the cool baggage drop-off, immigration, security, etc (I already checked-in online)).

Btw, it is important, at this point, to mention that the weather in Europe that week generally had been awful throughout. And today was no exception as it was gloomy, rainy, and windy.

At 8:50 AM, the boarding process started and a bus took us to our airplane: a KLM Cityhopper’s Fokker 70 reg code PH-KZT flight number KL 1049 heading to Bristol. And it was a rainy morning at Schiphol today. We took off from runway 18L (This was a 3400 meter runway and because a Fokker 70 did not need a runway that long to take off, the pilot decided to start the take off not from the tip of the runway. We took the point where the runway was around 2500 meter, still much more than enough for a Fokker 70 to take off).

Anyway, as I just said above, the weather today was quite awful; and this was the case in the 70 minutes flight to Bristol. There was turbulence pretty much almost everywhere in our flight path (even though the weather looked nice outside, with the sun shining above the thick cloud). And because Fokker 70 was one of the relatively smaller aircrafts, we really felt the effect of the turbulence, hahaha. It was not really bad though, the turbulence just made the flight not a smooth one. πŸ˜€

At around 9:40 AM local time (there was one hour time difference between The Netherlands and The United Kingdom), our flight landed smoothly at runway 27 of Bristol International Airport. Here is the landing video:

After that, it was the usual stuffs again (passing the immigration desk and taking my luggage). Then, I took the shuttle bus service to get to the Bristol city centre, at the main coach station.

At the coach station, I planned to walk to my hotel which was like less than 1 km away (I already had a map with me). But then it started raining quite hard. I waited for a little bit, and when the rain subsided a little bit, I decided to go. It started raining a bit harder along the way, so I took off my umbrella (Yes, I learned from my previous trip when I just arrived in Singapore and it was raining and I did not have my umbrella with me :D).

But then, the weather probably took my action as a resistance against him, so he was probably like “Oh, so you are okay with rain? Okay, challenge accepted!“. As what happened next was this:

Yes, it was HAILING!

Yes, it was HAILING!

Yes, it was HAILING while I was still halfway to my hotel! Like, WTF! Long story short, I arrived at my hotel, checked-in (lucky the room was already ready as I was quite early actually), and got my room.

After taking a rest for a little bit, I decided to go out to have lunch. And I chose to dine at a Jamie Oliver’s restaurant there for lunch πŸ˜€ . It was quite a busy afternoon apparently as I had to wait for 15 minutes until a table was ready for me. I had a lamb lollipops for lunch. Taste-wise, it was really nice; the only problem for me was HOW to eat it, hahaha. In the end I asked for a plate to help me eat the lamb shank πŸ˜€ .

I finished lunch at around 14:00 and I decided to go around the area. It was quite a nice neighborhood as it was near the Museum and Art Gallery, the university, and the Cabot Tower. The Cabot Tower was nice as it was located on top of the Brandon hill so it provided a view of the city.

After that, I went back to the hotel to rest a little bit, and I published this post. At around 17:30, I went out again to see how it was like in the evening and also looking for a place for dinner. But as it turned out, there was not much that was happening in the evening though. So I just had dinner at a restaurant slash bar in the harbourside. It was a rump steak and I ordered tea as my drink to make it more English-que, hahaha πŸ˜† . Then I went back to my hotel.

Day 2 (Saturday, 28 December 2013)

After having an English breakfast at a restaurant near my hotel, my day started with taking a bus (I bought the bus day ticket) to go to Clifton to the suspension bridge. The Clifton Suspension Bridge was apparently one of the landmarks of Bristol, so I had to go there. There, I first went to the Observatory which was located on a small hill next to the bridge, providing a beautiful scene of the bridge and the Avon Gorge, the gorge that was passed by the bridge. After that,Β I crossed the bridge (twice obviously). πŸ˜€

I spent more than one hour there before deciding to leave and go back to the Bristol city centre. I took the bus all the way to the Bristol Temple Meads station. Then because I found nothing interesting (it was just a railway station), I went to the city centre. And there, there was a: shopping centre! Hahaha πŸ˜† . I went around but did not buy anything. Then, I walked on the side of the River Avon in Bristol and got to the Brunel’s ss Great Britain ship. It was quite a long walk though from the city centre (around 2.1 km one way based on Google Maps πŸ˜† ) .

I didn’t go into the ship (because it was not free πŸ˜› ) and decided to go back to the hotel for rest. I stopped by at a supermarket to buy a sandwich and some snacks for lunch. I went out at around 18:00 for dinner; and I decided to have dinner at a Latin American restaurant after reading in their menu that they had the chimichurri sauce! Well, it tasted a little bit different from the one I had in Madrid one year ago though. After that, I went back to the hotel.

Btw, there was a unique installment in the square near the restaurant. So it was a touch-screen computer where we could choose some space objects. And once we did, a big arrow next to the computer would move and point to the location of the object in the sky, plus showing us the distance from the Earth! Quite cool! Here is how it worked when I chose Pluto for example:

Hari 1 (Jumat, 27 Desember 2013)

It was a raining morning at Schiphol

Oke deh, challenge accepted!”. Dan yang terjadi selanjutnya adalah ini:

Yes, it was HAILING!

Iya dong, HUJAN ES!

Setelahnya, aku menyebrangi jembatannya (dua kali tentunya). πŸ˜€

The Clifton Suspension Bridge in Clifton, Bristol.

Kayak gini nih contohnya ketika planet Pluto dipilih:
