#1145 – Southern France and Austria Trip (Part I)

ENGLISH

Day 0 (Thursday, 18 October 2012)

My Thalys train to Paris was scheduled to depart from Rotterdam Centraal Station at 15:58. I was quite bored of taking train to get to Rotterdam Centraal and so I decided to take bus no.40 instead. There was one stop of bus 40 that was so close to my apartment. So, I took the bus at 14:30 and arrived at Rotterdam Centraal some minutes over 15:00.

Anyway, the train was kinda annoying though because it was late by five minutes!

Five minutes late Thalys

😀

At around 18:40, my train arrived at Gare du Nord in Paris. After arriving, I took the metro to get to my parents’ hotel’s neighborhood. Long story short, I found the hotel and my parents’ room; then we had dinner at a French restaurant nearby (I already told my parents that we had to eat French food while we were in France! :D). The French food was, as always, VERY NICE!! I ordered canard (duck) which tasted so good! My dad tried tartar steak but he did not really like the taste because of the mustard. My mom ordered escalope salmon which was also very good. For dessert, we ordered crème brûlée. It was good! And I finally had a portion of crème brûlée in Paris!!😀

After dinner, we went back to the hotel because we would have to get up early (at 4:00) the next morning.

Day 1 (Friday, 19 October 2012)

After getting up early, we took a pre-booked taxi to go to Gare Montparnasse in Paris to take the TGV train that would bring us to Lourdes. It was my first experience going around with a taxi in Paris, huahaha😆 . And this made me realize that some of the traffic lights in Paris were so close to each other. There were two traffic lights which were just like 50 meter apart!🙄 It was around 5:30 AM so the traffic was really good; it only took us 20-ish minutes to get to Gare Montparnasse from our hotel in the Opera district. Oh btw, for our trip to Lourdes, we were also travelling with four other people: my mom’s good friend and her daughter, and also two other friends.

Our TGV train to Lourdes departed from platform 5 of Gare Montparnasse at 6:30 AM. We were seated in Couch 18. There was a small incident though, that one of our seats was already taken by one stranger girl (which happened to be Indonesian btw, huahaha😆 ); it turned out that she was in the wrong couch as she was supposed to be in Couch 17. Because it was still very early, they went back to sleep for the first three hours of the trip. Me? Well, I was reading a paper as I would have to write a review of this paper once I got back in the Netherlands. Btw, the TGV trip from Paris to Lourdes more or less followed this route (you can zoom it in or out to make it more clear, the route is the blue line):

The TGV train arrived at Lourdes Station at around 13:15, some 10 minutes late behind schedule. We took a taxi to get to our hotel. After putting our stuffs in our rooms, we walked to the Sanctuary. The weather was not so good that day as it was drizzling. River Pau which ran through the city appeared to be very “full” and water even almost spilled at one part of the river by the Sanctuary. It looked like this:

The bank of River Pau by the Sanctuary. It already looked quite concerning, didn’t it?

Anyway, the first thing they wanted to do was to take a “bath” at the sanctuary. Well, it was not like a normal bath as this was more or less a procession and ritual. I, of course, joined as it was quite intriguing. The “bathrooms” for men and women were, obviously, separated and we had to queue before taking the “bath”. After waiting for some time, I finally had the chance to get into the bathing place, and the water was SO coold!!😯 Inside, they asked me to sit down at the end of the bathing place. After awhile, it was done and I could leave.

After that, we walked around the area and decided to have lunch first at a random restaurant around the site. After lunch, my dad and I decided to get back to the hotel to get some rest. My dad went straight away to our room to take a nap while I stayed at the lobby to surf the internet.

That night, we walked back to the Sanctuary to join the candles procession. On the way there, I noticed that the water level on River Pau seemed to have elevated and I expressed my concern. But what could we do? So, after dinner, we joined the candles procession which was assisted in six languages (French, Italian, Spanish, English, German, and Dutch). It was quite a unique experience, though I could only understand the English part and some of the Dutch or German part, hahaha.

After the procession, we went back to our hotel. My mom decided to also buy some souvenirs along the way.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to them, rain kept falling at the headwaters of the River Pau causing the water discharge of the river to keep increasing…

BAHASA INDONESIA

Hari 0 (Kamis, 18 Oktober 2012)

Thalys-nya terlambat lima menit!

😀

Akibatnya, debit air Sungai Pau terus naik…
