#900 – Koninginnedag 2011

ENGLISH

Those who already read this entry might think that I am taking my own word here. I am gonna defend my corner here๐Ÿ˜€ First of all, I was soo tired and exhausted with all the stuffs from campus and I felt that I needed one day off. Second of all, I just got another three-day extension for my oral exam because of the Liberation Day holiday next week.๐Ÿ™‚ So, after that I indeed did have the time to see Koninginnedag๐Ÿ™‚.

Still, actually I did not plan to go for that long because I still had works to do afterall. So, my original plan was just to see what was happening only in Delft and Den Haag. Delft, simply because I lived in Delft and I wanted to see what was going on in the centrum during Koninginnedag. And Den Haag because Den Haag was just near Delft and a friend of mine told me Den Haag was nice during Koninginnedag.

Koninginnedag in Delft was interesting! There were so many people in the centrum and many people sold varied things in the streets. This is due to the “vrijmarkt” (free market) where everybody is allowed to sell things in the streets during Koninginnedag. I saw a booth selling lumpia and I was interested at first, until I saw the price: 1.95 euro! Well, to me it was kinda too expensive as I was not that craving for it. So, bye bye lumpia booth, sorry, but you were too just too pricy๐Ÿ˜› Then, because Delft was just a very small town, after like 45 minutes I already circled like most part of the centrum. And so I decided to go to the train station to catch a train to Den Haag.

Koninginnedag in Den Haag was the opposite of Koninginnedag in Delft: it was BORING!! There was practically nothing “new” nor “special” there during the day. There was just a playing ground for children. But beside that, there was pretty much nothing special going on. Well, after getting back home and googled it, I realized that it was actually my fault in a way: Den Haag was NOT famous for the Koninginnedag, but for Koninginnenacht! So, the city would be “alive” during the night, not during the day. Oh, so that was why!๐Ÿ˜€

Then, feeling a little disappointed with Den Haag, I had a thought about going to Amsterdam. It was already almost 3 PM. I was so unsure that I literally walked back and forth between the platform for trains to Amsterdam and trains to Delft in Den Haag Station๐Ÿ˜€ But in the end, I think my adventurous side took control of my decision and I jumped into the stoptrein to Amsterdam. I was feeling excited at this time, because it was not my plan at all. I did not prepare myself to go to Amsterdam and it was Koninginnedag, the day where a lot of people would flock into Amsterdam. Beside, I would be very tired after Amsterdam because of all the walking I did that whole day. But then I did not give a damn on it and just enjoyed my trip to Amsterdam๐Ÿ™‚ At one point I also thought I took the wrong train as it was so slow in reaching Amsterdam and it did not pass Schiphol. When it stopped at Haarlem, I got off and saw the sign saying that indeed the train was going to Amsterdam. So, I got back in again๐Ÿ˜€.

Finally, at 4 PM I was in Amsterdam. Stepping off Amsterdam Centraal Station, I immediately knew that Amsterdam was the “right” city to visit for Koninginnedag. It was SO alive and there were SOOO MANY people there!! The Koninginnedag atmosphere was also thicker there as the percentage of people wearing orange clothing or accessories was WAAY higher than in Delft (let alone Den Haag). In Delft, even though there were so many people in the centrum, less than 20% of all people there actually wore orange clothing or accessories. In Amsterdam, I think at least 50% people wore them. As a note: I was wearing my orange-white stripped poloshirt, so technically I was one of the people wearing orange clothing๐Ÿ˜› Plus, Amsterdam was a big(ger) city, so it was way more festive! People were drinking [alcohol], dancing on the street, dancing on the boats, playing some games, or just sitting around. The bottom line is: there were so many people! In a way, the crowd reminded me of my latest new year’s eve in Venezia earlier this year. There were just so many people and many of them were drinking. The difference was that Koninginnedag was still “civilized” as I still felt safe and there was no fire-cracker on the streets๐Ÿ˜›.

After more than one hour of walking, I felt a bit tired and I decided to get back to Amsterdam Centraal Station. Beside, even if I had decided to stay a bit longer in Amsterdam, I would have seen a similar thing: people in orange dancing and drinking. I think I had seen enough of the day and decided to go home๐Ÿ˜€.

::: People dancing on a boat.

::: There were a lot of people in Amsterdam!

::: People on boats during Koninginnedag 2011!

::: Dam’s Square during Koninginnedag. Normally, it was an open plaza.

::: Again, there were so many people in Amsterdam!

Jadi, bye bye deh kios lumpia, maaf nggak beli, habis kamu jualnya kemahalan sih *pelit mode on*๐Ÿ˜› Trus, karena Delft itu cuma kota kecil, setelah 45 menit aku sudah mengelilingi hampir semua bagian centrumnya.
