Previously on Paris Trip: 2012 Roland Garros: Zilko went to Paris to watch the second grandslam tournament of the year, Roland Garros (or the French Open). He had access for three days to the tournament; and he had spent his first day access where he watched Samantha Stosur’s and Bob and Mike Bryan’s matches. Now he was ready to go to his second day at the tournament…

Day 3 (Thursday, 31 May 2012)
My routine in the morning was pretty much the same as the day before: getting up at 7 AM, taking a shower, having breakfast at the hostel, and leaving the hostel at around 8 AM to get to the gate at 9 AM. The queues were also the same. There was the first queue to get to the security check and there was the second one in front of the gate to get into the grounds. As the procedure was pretty much the same as the first day, I also entered the gate at pretty much the same time: around 9.45 AM.
My ticket this day was more ‘elite’ in the sense that I had access to Le Court Philippe Chatrier (the center/main court) for the entire day. I checked the schedule of play the day before and I was excited to find out that these four matches were scheduled to be played in Philippe Chatrier:
1. Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) vs Andy Murray [4] (GBR) at 11 AM; followed by
2. Jarmila Gajdošová (AUS) vs Caroline Wozniacki [9] (DEN); followed by:
3. Paul-Henri Mathieu [WC] (FRA) vs John Isner [10] (USA); and followed by:
4. Ayumi Morita (JPN) vs Maria Sharapova [2] (RUS).
Wow, big names, right??? As you (might) now, Andy Murray is one of my most favorite men’s singles players in the men’s tour currently; and who doesn’t know the Maria Sharapova?? Btw, Sharapova will regain her world no.1 status as of Monday replacing Victoria Azarenka after reaching the final of this Roland Garros earlier today. Based on my excitement towards these matches, my priority was as follows: Murray’s match, then Sharapova’s match, then Wozniacki’s matched which was followed closely by Isner’s match.
The first match would begin at 11 AM. Because one seat in Philippe Chatrier court was already reserved under my name (there was seat number in the ticket), basically I didn’t have to come to the court that early. So, I also did what I did the day before before plays started: walking around the grounds to see some players practicing. That morning, I saw the sixth-seeded David Ferrer, Bernard Tomic, Tamarine Tanasugarn, Andrea Hlaváčková, Lucie Hradecká, Pablo Andújar, and Guillermo García-López. At around 10.30 AM I walked back towards Court Philippe Chatrier when I saw a lot of people were flocking Court no.4. It looked quite crazy as some people even climbed up the entrance roof of the next door court (Court no.5) just to get a better view of whoever was practicing in Court no.4. It looked like this:
Of course I also became curious to find out who was practicing there. It turned out to be the king of clay: RAFAEL NADAL!!
. And then I completely understood why people went crazy, hahaha. Lucky for me I was able to find a good seat in Court no.4 (though I had to sit on a quite wet bench; but whatever, I was wearing jeans so it would dry out quickly anyway, hahaha
) to see Rafael Nadal’s practice session.
And what I saw amazed me, big time, and it made me come to a realization on why Rafael Nadal, or the big four (Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray as the other three) in general, dominated the men’s game so much. His level was just unbelievable!! I mean, it was “only” his practice session for his second round match later on that day, but his level there, in practice, was already very very very high!! Usually, (many) players approach the practice sessions in a tournament as warming-up before their matches: to get the groove and the ball feeling; and also to strategize on how to play their opponent(s). So it may be valid to say that they would not be in their 100% condition during this kind of practice, as they would prefer to save their energy and intensity for the matches. You know, at this point, I had already watched some other professionals’ practice sessions and so I could see the definite difference that set Rafael Nadal apart from all of them. It seemed to me that his level in practice was already higher than the level of some top 100 players in their matches!! Rafael Nadal kept making amazing winner shot after winner shot even in his practice, to the delight of the spectators!! I was wowed, really… . No wonder later on that day he won 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 against the world no. 43.
Somehow, it was 11 AM already so Andy Murray’s match in Philippe Chatrier was about to start. I left Court no.4 and ran to Le Court Philippe Chatrier, also feeling very excited that I would finally watch Andy Murray’s match!!
I got my seat at Tribune Henri Cochet just in time when Andy Murray and Jarkko Nieminen were warming up for their matches. A few minutes later, the match was started. Just like in a typical Andy Murray’s match, Andy started quite slowly and somehow was trailing 0-3. The next game was Andy’s serve, and I noticed something was definitely wrong!
Andy’s serve was very weak at only around 95-100 kmh (even my good serves are faster than that). No wonder, Nieminen broke and led 4-0. Andy went to his bench and called a trainer; and this started to worry me
. It was apparent that his back injury was still troubling him a little bit. The match resumed after the injury timeout was over, and Andy lost the first set 1-6…
The second set started with a similar fashion where Andy was, somehow, trailing again at 0-2. But he slowly regained his form and gathered some momentum as he broke back and leveled the match at 4-4. From hereon, it seemed that he had gathered enough momentum and sealed the second set 6-4 with Nieminen’s double-faulting at set point. The third and fourth set were pretty much one-man show (though Nieminen did try to put some fights, but the now-in-form Andy was already too solid for him). In the end, Andy Murray won the match 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2; much to my delight!!
Btw, of course I did cheer for Andy Murray along the match. I was one of the guys who yelled “C’Mon Andy” in English, hahaha
It was already 1.40 PM or something but I decided to stay for the next match between Wozniacki and Gajdošová, even though I was already really hungry at that time, hahaha. It turned out to be a routine play for Caroline Wozniacki as she won handily 6-1, 6-4. The match was a very typical Wozniacki match though, where she made a little number of unforced errors and also a few winners but forcing her opponent to make tons of errors (Wozniacki made 9 winner and 7 unforced errors, while Gajdošová made 25 winners and 40 unforced errors; see the difference now??
).
The next match was between Paul-Henri Mathieu, a French player who entered the tournament with a wildcard, against John Isner, the 2.06 meter tenth seeded from the USA. I stayed for the first three games of the match and decided to leave the Court because I was seriously hungry. I went to Les Jardin Restaurant to see what they had there. And then I found out that they almost ran out of food for lunch
, which I found weird until I looked at my watch and realized that it was already almost 4 PM!! hahaha
(no wonder I was starving at the time and almost no food from lunch was available in the restaurant). In the end, I decided to eat a beefsteak with French potato for €16.
After the late lunch, I decided not to go back to Court Philippe Chatrier directly as I thought I needed to stretch my legs a little bit more. Continuously sitting at Philippe Chatrier for almost five hours was apparently not good, hahaha. At the time, John Isner took the first set 7-6(5); but Mathieu took the second and third both time with score 6-4. I recharged my camera to prepare it for the upcoming Maria Sharapova’s match; and planned to come back to Philippe Chatrier at the start of the fourth set of Mathieu-Isner match.
I did come back to my seat at the fourth set; and John Isner took this set 6-3 to force a deciding fifth set to be played. It was already like 6.30 PM and I had a feeling that this match might take while. Therefore, there was a possibility that Sharapova’s match would be cancelled if this fifth set took a lot of time, which was possible because in Roland Garros, there was no tiebreak in the fifth set (or third set for women’s singles matches).
The fifth set, indeed, turned out to be an epic one with both players held their serves and played some amazing tennis. The French crowd went ‘crazy’ when Mathieu made a winner (or forced errors to Isner). I kinda wanted to applaud John Isner when he produced some winners, but then I realized that almost all people within radius 10 meter from me were French, huahaha
. And so I reacted quietly, hahaha
. It was 8 PM already and I became sure that there would be no Sharapova match for me that day. At that time, the score was 12-11 and there was still no sign anybody would just give up.
There were some thoughts that were going through in my mind at this time:
1. Based on the entire schedule today, there was definitely a very good chance Serena Williams’ mixed doubles match (that I really wanted to watch) would be played the next day (Friday). Which court or what time, no idea, but it was likely to be played on Friday.
2. Aside from that, I would still have an entire day the next day to spend at Roland Garros. If I stayed for too long (hence I would go to bed a bit later), I was afraid I would be too tired the next day and it wouldn’t be good if there were several good matches I wanted to watch.
3. This Isner-Mathieu match could really go to the distance even further as both players still showed no sign of weakness. So it might still take another hour or something; while even though undoubtedly it was an epic match, both players were not really my most favorite players in the world.
4. I was already quite craving for dinner and I didn’t know what time the restaurants would close that evening; and I kinda wanted to avoid the subway rush from Roland Garros after the conclusion of Isner-Mathieu match (as I assumed a lot of people would stay to watch the conclusion of the match).
Therefore, I concluded that the most efficient decision for me that day, taking into account the utility and ‘satisfaction’ that I would get, was that for me to leave the venue soon, even though the Isner-Mathieu match hadn’t been concluded yet. At around 8.20 PM, when the score was 13-12, I decided to leave the grounds.
I decided to have dinner at KFC first before going back to my hostel. After arriving at the hostel, I checked the result and in the end, the Frenchmen won 18-16 in the fifth. I was glad I decided to leave as I thought, with that score, it would have taken at least another 30-40 minutes since I left until the conclusion of the match, hehehe
In total, this match took 5 hours and 41 minutes to complete!!

1. Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) vs Andy Murray [4] (GBR) jam 11 pagi; diikuti oleh:
2. Jarmila Gajdošová (AUS) vs Caroline Wozniacki [9] (DEN); diikuti oleh:
3. Paul-Henri Mathieu [WC] (FRA) vs John Isner [10] (USA); dan diikuti oleh:
4. Ayumi Morita (JPN) vs Maria Sharapova [2] (RUS).
Aku sangat takjub deh… . Nggak heran siangnya ia menang 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 atas pemain peringkat 43 dunia.
Btw, tentu saja aku menyemangati Andy Murray dong sepanjang pertandingan.
. Jadilah aku bereaksi dengan sunyi alias nggak berisik, hahaha
1. Hari terakhir dari perjalanan ini
2. Beberapa pertandingan tenis yang seru!
3. Kembali ke Belanda.

. But then, you know, luck was not on my side as I made few prediction errors in the semifinals and finals (you can see that on my prediction). And these matches were “more important” matches with bigger points which meant that I lost a lot of points because of them. As a result, my ranking dropped, haha. I ended the game ranked no. 164 (well, not really bad considering it is out of 4808 players, right? haha
