#1227 – The Apprentice and Blue Clay

ENGLISH

The Apprentice

I just found out yesterday that the ninth series of The Apprentice UK was premiered last week with two back to back episodes. As usual, I love this UK version of the series because it is purely business; and I think this season is going to be another interesting season. Anyway, I am quite disappointed that Jaz was fired in the first episode though, even though I did understand the reason behind that decision and she was, indeed, jumping to be the project manager too soon.

Speaking of The Apprentice, the US version is going to have its season finale next week. This year’s season is an All Stars season where the contestants are previously contestants on the previous seasons of The Celebrity Apprentice. It was quite clear from the beginning though that Trace Adkins and Penn Jillette would likely to be the final two. And they were. About this season, I like the fact that they invited Omarosa back; but I was a bit disappointed that she was fired in week five. I think she should have stayed a bit longer as she made the show more interesting.

Back to Red Clay

Anyway, let us switch the topic to one of my favorites now, tennis. As Roland Garros is going to start in less than two weeks ( ), a lot of clay tennis tournaments have been played where the players are preparing themselves for this second grandslam tournament of the year. One of the biggest one was the Madrid Masters which was held last week. On the side note, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams showed their mastery on clay by winning the title there (defeating Stanislas Wawrinka and Maria Sharapova, respectively, in the final).

But this is now what I want to write here now. I want to make a comment on the color. Last year, I was really aesthetic to find out the organizer decided to make the debut of blue clay as the surface of the tournament. I found blue clay really refreshing and nice on the eyes. However, a lot of top (male) players (read: Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal) were against this blue clay and threatened to boycott the tournament this year if the tournament would still use blue clay. Facing pressure from all directions (including the ATP), the tournament decided to switch back to the traditional red clay for this year’s edition of the tournament.

IMO, it was an unfortunate fate to the blue clay though. This is because the players were against the blue clay last year because it was too slippery. So it had (to have) nothing to do with the color, in my opinion. But they are the players, who actually play on the court, so obviously they are more qualified to assess the situation than me. What I am saying is, to me, it is quite a shame that the color blue is gone from clay tournaments.

The Apprentice

Ngomongin tentang The Apprentice, versi Amerikanya akan mencapai episode final minggu depan.

#1197 – TAR and TCA

ENGLISH

Two of my favorite reality TV shows are back with their latest season. So here we go…

The Amazing Race (season 22)

The Amazing Race is back! And this season is really exciting because for the third time in the last four seasons, TAR is back to Indonesia! After visiting Yogyakarta in season 19, then Surabaya in season 21, now they visit Bali. And the Bali episode is this week’s (this Sunday’s) episode! :D

The Bali episode was, indeed, a very exciting episode though. Not only because it was in Bali, but also what actually happened on the race due to the twist. So, Jessica and John possessed an Express Pass because of winning the first leg in Bora-Bora (btw, I just knew from the race that Bora-Bora was actually a very beautiful place!). With this Express Pass, they could actually skip any one task they wanted. A nice advantage, no? Especially if they were in a neck to neck situation at the bottom of the pack.

And that was exactly the position they found themselves on in Bali. They were among the last teams in the race. In fact, they were the last team, but they did not realize that. So they were reluctant in using the Express Pass, and ended up not using it, and ended up being the last time to check in at the pit stop, and unfortunately it was an elimination leg. So they were eliminated, while still on possession of an unused Express Pass. Well, in a hindsight it was quite silly because they were numerous opportunities where they could exercise the Pass and moved ahead; especially the last roadblock where they could just skip it and go directly to the pit stop. Ay yey yey, and then they got eliminated.

In an interview they explained that they thought a team was behind them. So they decided not to use the Express Pass (and so they could save it for later use). Okay, then it was just the case of making the wrong decision. They risked it, and things did not work their way.

The Celebrity Apprentice (season 6)

The Celebrity Apprentice is also back with its sixth season (thirteenth so far for The Apprentice series). And this season is an “All-Star” season where the candidates are from the previous seasons. And guess what? Omarosa is back! Hahaha  . Yess! I always love Omarosa. I mean, she knows how to make good TV. Okay, this is going to be an interesting season…

Btw, in this week’s episode, Omarosa was the project manager and she won! It was her first victory as a PM in the three seasons she participated in!

BAHASA INDONESIA

Dua dari acara TV reality show favoritku kembali dengan musim terbarunya mereka nih. Jadi, mari kita mulai saja…

The Amazing Race (musim 22)

The Amazing Race mulai tayang lagi!

The Celebrity Apprentice (musim 6)

#1188 – Surprise from “Friends”

ENGLISH

Friends has always been my favorite sitcom, ALWAYS! And this show, in my opinion, possesses one thing that is needed to be called a great TV-show, that a lot of others cannot even come close. To me, it is its simplicity and closeness to daily life that makes boredom never arise every time I re-watch any of its episodes. Even though I already know the story line and some of the jokes, they never get old! I still laugh at a lot of them, or at least smile :D .

Ten seasons were produced, and I have watched ALL of its 236 episodes. As I said, they never get old and sometimes I still like to re-watch some of them while having my breakfast or dinner at home :) . And that is what I also did yesterday while having my dinner; and then I found a surprise.

So last night I was watching the third episode of season 8, The One Where Rachel Tells Ross. To remind you a little bit, it is the episode where Rachel tells Ross she is pregnant and Monica and Chandler leave for their honeymoon. Then I got a surprise. Well, it was a surprise for me, at least; because there is good possibility that some of you already know the surprise so it is not really a surprise for you.

Anyway, so, I found out that there was a deleted scene in that episode!! And I got the chance to watch it for the first time!!  It was really exciting even though it was just a little over four minutes!! I mean, to be able to watch a “new” scene from Friends after all this time, it was like a Christmas present! Totally unexpected!

This scene was deleted because it involved Chandler joking with the security at the airport and this episode was to be aired about two weeks after 9/11 in 2001. In light of that, the director decided to replace the scene; and that is how we got the story line where Monica and Chandler are behind another couple who are also on their honeymoon and keep getting free luxurious stuffs while Monica and Chandler can’t because they are a little bit “too late”.

Btw, apparently this deleted scene is available on Youtube as well. So here we go, enjoy:

BAHASA INDONESIA

Jadi, tadi malam aku menonton episode ketiga musim 8, The One Where Rachel Tells Ross.

#1132 – Fall Season, Yay!

ENGLISH

No, I am not going to write about the weather or climate now. That topic is for later use when I have no other idea or inspiration to write :P , or when the weather or climate is really worth writing, huahaha  . So, now that it is already October, I am excited for one thing (well, several actually ;) ): new seasons of several TV-shows (that I like, obviously) start!! Yay!!

Well, all of them premiered last week actually, and unfortunately I missed the premieres (except for one show) so I watched them a little bit with a delay. That is why I have been doing quite a catch-up marathon earlier this week. Only some episodes so it was not that much. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had enough time as I am currently really busy at work, hahaha  .

So, what are these shows? Well, actually, same old same old: How I Met Your Mother season 8, Two and A Half Men season 10, The Big Bang Theory season 6, and The Amazing Race season 21. As for South Park, well, I have been doing some marathons on its previous seasons, so I am taking it one episode at a time, hahaha.

Anyway, based on their premieres, in my opinion, How I Met Your Mother really stood out. I felt like it was being straight-forward in its premiere, which was a really good thing for me, that I got the impression we are really close to finally get the revelation of Ted’s wife identity. But well, we will see. Either way, I am good as this show is legen, wait for it, dary!! :D

TAR 21 also looks promising to me. The casts, so far, looked good (for a good show). I recognized one of them, Ryan, as being a former candidate on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, a spin-off show of The Apprentice. Beside, I heard some info a few months ago that this season of TAR visited Indonesia, again!! After visiting Yogyakarta two seasons ago (the first time the US version of TAR visited Indonesia), they were visiting Surabaya (and the surrounding, like Madura) this season.

So, yeah, I am really glad that now a lot of new episodes of TV shows are back on the wheel as it means: more entertainment! :)

BAHASA INDONESIA

Jadi, sebenarnya acara apa saja sih? Yah, sebenarnya ya same old same old aja kok: How I Met Your Mother musim 8, Two and A Half Men musim 10, The Big Bang Theory musim 6, dan The Amazing Race musim 21. Kalau South Park sih, hmm, sejauh ini aku baru melakukan maraton menonton beberapa episode musim-musim terdahulunya deh, jadi ya satu satu gitu, hahaha.

Anyway, berdasarkan premiernya, menurutku, How I Met Your Mother amat menonjol deh. Aku merasa episode pertamanya tanpa basa-basi dan tanpa ba bi bu, yang mana menurutku oke banget ya, sehingga aku mendapatkan impresi kalau kita ini sudah amat dekat untuk akhirnya mendapatkan pengungkapan identitas istrinya Ted. Ah, tapi kita lihat saja deh. Toh dekat atau tidak, aku juga nggak masalah karena acara ini kan legen, wait for it, dary!! :D

Aku mengenali salah satunya, Ryan, sebagai salah satu mantan kandidat acara The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, sebuah acara spin-off The Apprentice.

#1017 – New Week

ENGLISH

This week is sort of “special” in a few ways:

TV Shows Are Back!

Some of my favorite TV shows are back from their winter hiatus this week. This really excites me as it means that I have more options for entertainment now, haha :P How I Met Your Mother and Two and A Half Men have been back since last week though (but not airing this week :( ), but The Big Bang Theory is back this week. Ah, and not to forget, Desperate Housewives, hahaha :)

Back To Work

Normal weeks are back in TU Delft. All activities are back to normal in the campus starting this week, even though this week is the last week for all classes in TU Delft this quarter as next week will be the white week and the two weeks after that will be the exam weeks. This does not really affect me though as I am not taking any more classes, haha. Well, except that I have a part-time job as a student-assistant now which means that I have to handle two more classes (one tomorrow and another one on Friday, though on Friday I will only have to oversee an exam that will be held in my class). My tennis lesson this quarter will also end this week.

One Week Before the Australian Open

Well, well, I know, this is quite lame as the Australian Open will just start next week. But what is exciting about this week is that in a week like this, it is very fun to make a prediction for the tournament. This week shall provide the latest update for the tournament regarding the state and performance of each of the player. As for me, well, now it is still too soon to make a prediction. So, just wait for it! I will make one later on this week, probably by Saturday :)

Anyway, talking about Australian Open, there was a bad news yesterday. Venus Williams has announced her withdrawal from the tournament. She stated that she was not ready yet to return to competitive tennis (though she was very close to being ready). Well, though disappointing as it means that the women’s field just lost one strong contender (even though she is ranked #100 this week; but with the Williams sisters, ranking means nothing), this decision was quite foreseeable and understandable. Her decision to withdraw from Auckland, which was held last week, meant that she would not have had any competitive matches under her belt coming to the AO, if she had decided to play AO, since her withdrawal from the US Open in September 2011. This would not, obviously, sufficiently prepare her game for this big tournament, even for Williams’ standard. She stated in her website that she is still aiming to come back to the circuit in February; but I do hope that she will really be back by March in the tournament in Miami :) . We will see.

BAHASA INDONESIA

Kembalinya Acara-Acara TV!

Beberapa acara TV favoritku akhirnya kembali dari hiatus musim dinginnya mereka. Ini membuatku bersemangat karena artinya jadi makin banyak deh pilihan hiburannya, haha :P How I Met Your Mother dan Two and A Half Men sudah mulai tayang dari minggu lalu sih sebenarnya (tapi minggu ini malah nggak tayang :( ), tapi The Big Bang Theory kan baru kembali minggu ini.

Satu Minggu Sebelum Australian Open

Yah, we will see deh.

#1005 – Free Books, Dutch Course, and TV Shows

ENGLISH

Free Books

So, effective from last November, the library in my faculty was shut down because the university wanted to cut some expenses in this recession time. And apparently, they did not think that the existence of a library in my faculty was important enough to still be retained. Anyway, not that now we do not have library anymore in the university. No. We still have the one and only central library and I do not think TU Delft will ever even think of shutting down this central library – whose cony architecture has sort of become one symbol of TU Delft in a way. Btw, FYI, before this closure, there were five libraries in the whole university, kinda quite a lot, no? :D

Anyway, so, apparently they also did not have enough space to store all the books from the closed library. And guess what they did? Giving all the books and collections away for FREE to all students and staffs!! Well, of course not like they had staffs standing somewhere and giving random books away to random passing-by strangers. No. But interested students and staffs should come to the library in two predetermined sessions to pick up any books they liked. Also, to be fair to all students and staffs, each person could only take 10 books maximum. Plus, all people who came got free hot chocolate or coffee and some cookies, muahahahaha

See, a super rare golden opportunity, right??? And because they announced they would open two sessions (both were this week), one in Tuesday noon and another one in Thursday noon, last week I said to myself to come to the library on Tuesday noon. Of course: as early as possible as it was first-come-first-serve basis. So, the earlier you came, the wider array of available books you could take for free. And then, last Tuesday, I FORGOT to come by at the library!!!  Daammnn!!!! How could I do that?? But I calmed myself down saying it was still fine as there was still one more session on Thursday noon, even though it meant that the range of available books would have been reduced probably significantly.

So, this Thursday, I came to the library to pick up some books. I forced myself to not forget this one last opportunity, hahaha :) And of course because we were allowed to take maximum of 10 books, I planned to go back home with 10 books, muahahaha  . One thing, because this library was formerly my faculty’s library, the books they were giving away were also closely related to the faculty: they were books about mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering; even though some magazines like National Geographic were also available. But of course I did not want to take the magazines as it seemed to be like wasting this opportunity if I only took magazines, right? hahaha :)

Anyway, after spending like one hour in the crowded library (it was, without question, a very popular event among students and staffs) and both my arms were killing me after carrying ten books of my choice (10 books were quite heavy! I tell you this!! Look at the picture below, the books were huge), I had finalized my choice of those ten books. As expected, some books that I was initially looking for had been taken away; but I still managed to get some good books though in my opinion.

End of Dutch Course

This Thursday my second level (Elementary II) Dutch Course also ended. Finally! It was quite a relief! Well, you know, I have been extremely busy this quarter, and now I am very happy that I am able to finish this Dutch course  – which I must say “very demanding” in term of time consumed – that I started. And I passed this level also, , which means that I can continue to the third level (Intermediate I).

If you asked me three months ago whether I planned to continue to the third level next semester or not, I probably would have said ‘yes’. However, now, after knowing how demanding it really is and how frustrating it is to have to prepare myself for the course while I am also extremely busy with other things from campus, which I should prioritize more than this Dutch course for now, I will answer ‘no’. I mean, I definitely really want to continue to the third level. However, I don’t think it will be wise for me to do that next semester, the semester where I must focus on my thesis, right? ;) So, I plan to take the third level probably after I graduate, hmmm.

The Amazing Race 19 and Young Apprentice

Anyway, earlier this week, the newest season of two of my most favorite reality shows came to an end. The Amazing Race 19 ended beautifully (for me) as my favorite team: Ernie and Cindy won the race. Quite a different story for Young Apprentice, I was not that excited to see the final as the two finalists were just okay for me. I mean, I still think Harry H. should have been in the final, even though I also think Zara deserved to be there as well (and she did). Anyway, after James’ and Zara’s performances in the final task, I think James should have won. He impressed me with his idea of the game he developed, which frankly I thought was trash at first, hahaha. But in the end, Lord Sugar picked Zara as the winner, hmmm.

Buku Gratis

Akhir Kelas bahasa Belanda

The Amazing Race 19 dan Young Apprentice

#974 – Exam, Mayday, and Rain

ENGLISH

Oral Exam

On Thusday, I had an oral examination for one project I worked on last September. My teammate and I worked really hard in that project by (we think) covering more areas and discussions than required. In the end it all paid off though. We did well in the oral exam and we got good grades. I myself got a 9, a grade that is (based on my experience) extremely hard to get in TU Delft btw, haha :D  . The thing that makes me even happier is that this course relates really close to my thesis project! :) I guess I am on the right track then!

Air Crash Investigation (Mayday)

As I mentioned this time, many new seasons of TV-shows were premiered this September, and one of them was a documentary show called Air Crash Investigation (Mayday). Well, actually this show did not really follow the “trend” though as the season was premiered back in August. But it doesn’t matter anyway.

Anyway, so, earlier this week I decided to watch the first episode of the eleventh season (the new season) of this show. The episode was about a quite recent airplane accident, the TAM Airlines flight 3054, which occurred in 2007 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Well, I will not make any comment about the accident here as that is not the reason why I am writing this now; but I really need to say something about the show itself.

Somehow, I felt (and still do) that this episode was (one of) the worst episode(s) ever!! I mean, it was not like an episode of a series that had been running for eleven seasons!! It seemed that they took a lot of (not just one! ) steps back in term of the quality of the documentary. Why do I say so? Glad you ask. Well, I have several reasons for that:

(1) The pace of the episode was quite off. Well, it was true that there was still a story that they followed, but they could have wrapped it up in a way that (some) causes of the accident were a mystery in the beginning. One (key) cause had been revealed since the beginning of the show, which was only one of the two reverse-thrusters worked on the plane. I think it would have been better if they kept this fact until mid-show. But anyway, this might not matter so much as me and the producer might have different ideas about it. So, let’s move on to the second problem:

(note: but don’t worry. Aerospace technicians have already thought about the (worst scenario for) reverse-thrusters. Actually, even with only one thrusters working, it would still not matter. This accident happened due to combination of many incidents that occurred at the same time, for example: rain, short and not-ideal runway for landing during rain, and also pilot error.)

(2) Too many disturbing unrealistic small details. By this, I mean some unrealistic details that they put on the episode. They were not necessarily wrong, but they were not realistic either. Okay, it might not be important for some, but they kinda bothered me :P . For example: it was super obvious that they shot the scene where the two (or more) investigators investigated the runway in a studio. However, to me, there were several disturbing details on the “runway”; and those were the runway markings. First of all, the markings did not look like real markings (there should be more “lines” involved); the “35 L” sign in the “runway” was definitely “too small” and did not look like the real one; and the “35 L” sign did not seem to line up with the center line of the runway! I mean, cmon, you could have done much better than that!

(3) And (to me) the worst one: too many (small) errors! Two of those:

- I think I heard the narrator saying: “… [the reverse thrusters] to initiate acceleration“. Reverse thrusters to initiate acceleration?

- In one of the final scenes where they illustrated how it looked from the cockpit during the accident, when the plane was overrunning the end of the runway, it was clear that the sign on the runway was 35 L. HOWEVER, it was also stated that the plane landed at runway 35 L, which meant that that sign on the other end of the runway (which the plane overran) should be 17 R, NOT 35 L!! I mean, cmon!

Well, there were other drawbacks like the actors, etc, but that is none of my concerns, hmmm. I really wish they would have done much better in the upcoming episodes…

Weather

These past two weeks until like three days ago, we had had wonderful weather here in the Netherlands. Well, “wonderful” in the standard of Dutch weather, this is important to note btw, . However, starting two days ago, it all turned around! :( Well, I do not mind the cold (or even snow actually; but at this point of the year, it would have been quite worrying if it snowed now though, haha  ), but I absolutely hate the: RAIN!! :( I mean, I do not like rain as it means that I will be pretty much trapped indoors. When it is snowing, I still can do things outdoor as I will not get wet. But during rain, well, I will try to avoid being outside as much as I possibly can. And guess what, the forecast says that it will be raining during this weekend and it will continue until early next week. :( And this made me cancel my plan to go to Den Haag today :(

Well, I guess I have to say: “Good bye summer! See you next year.”

Ujian Lisan

Air Crash Investigation (Mayday)

Sepertinya mereka mengalami banyak (nggak cuma sedikit! ) kemunduran deh dalam hal kualitas. Mengapa? Ya, aku ada beberapa alasan untuk itu:

(1) Alur episodenya agak kacau.

(note: jangan takut lah.

- Aku dengar naratornya berkata: “… [the reverse thrusters] to initiate acceleration“.

Sampai bertemu tahun depan.”
